Hey There
It really depends on what your going to use it for, if your only going to use it on your porridge in the mornings (breakfast), the I would recommend Micellar Casein Protein Powder as this is a slow releasing protein. It makes you feel fuller longer, it can be taken on its own with water / milk if need be as a meal replacement. The point Is, its slower releasing, which will provide a longer sustained release of protein and amino acids throughout the day to your muscles. For this reason its also great to take before you go to bed, to get the sustained protein release while you sleep !
However, if your looking for a protein for post workout, you would be better off going with Whey Protein "ISOLATE", this is the fastest releasing protein which is the best for post workout as it releases quickly to promote recovery, growth and repair of your muscles, relatively low in CHO and Fat as well, almost 80-90% protein.
If your looking for an all round protein, id say go for a mixture then and get a Whey Protein Concentrate / Whey Protein Isolate (WPI/WPC Blend), this is basically the two I just explained combined in equal amounts.
Whichever one you choose to buy, make sure it is 100% natural, read the labels and check for any crap they may add to it, artificial sweeteners etc. You just want a natural protein. It can be flavoured, but just make sure its natural ! Since your goal is to lose weight / lose body fat, go for one with low fat / low CHO (Most WPI / WPC tend to be anyway)

Hello!
Protein powder (whey / egg white etc) is a great way to increase your protein intake if you naturally cannot eat enough protein through lean meats / nuts / dairy. Protein is an important macronutrient, equally important as fat and carbohydrate, but people often struggle to eat enough.
The reason body builders and other weight lifters use protein powder is to consume a good amount of protein in a short 'window' after working out, which is thought to improve muscle recovery speed and has lots of other scientific benefits I believe.
I'm in no way an expert but I can almost guarantee that any protein powder, no matter the ingredients, will not 'bulk you up' if eaten within your calories / macros and not as part of a body building / heavy lifting program.
I use Trutein Protein powder after a workout (i do lift heavy and I am not aiming to / will not be bulking up), but I would always choose natural lean proteins before protein powder.
Adding it to your porridge is a great easy way to include some protein into your breakfast, good idea.
Incidentally if you're eating at a calorie defecit and you're a female, the chances of ever bulking up, even while eating lots of protein and doing a heavy lifting programme, are slim to impossible, females are just not built that way on the whole, and eating at a deficit removes the body's ability to gain muscle mass.
As I said i'm no expert but picked up a lot of good advice on MFP hope this helps!0 -
If you want a decent and economical powder then look at Bodybuilding warehouse's range. (assuming you're in the UK?)
Don't dismiss because of the word bodybuilding. Whey is whey at the end of the day and its use is to fill protein macros and get them muscles repairing immediately after lifting.

the above is the powder I use.0 -
trutein, tastes amazing and is a good blend of fast and slow releasing proteins. chocolate peanut butter cup is a winner in my book.0

Protein powders can be use for losing weight, maintaining weight or gaining weight. It is simply a food source to help you meet your protein macro. It's still calories in/out that will determine whether you lose or gain weight.
In terms of what to use, use one that you like. It may mean trying several brands before you settle on a favourite as they are all different.
There is also no need to fall for ones aimed specifically at women or men, or specifically marketed as 'diet' formula. These diet types are usually just whey with some sort of caffeine source added, and are usually twice the price of a simple whey powder. May as well save yourself some money and have a coffee if you feel the need for the caffeine.
Also experiment with mixing with water or milk, as everyone has different tastes, but remember to account for the milk calories.0 -

Protein powder will not bulk you up. Lifting will not create bulk. I lift heavy and drink protein powder i'm strong and losing weight and not bulked out.
I just switched to body fortress (becuase i've decided to eat less sugar)
30g protein
2g sugar
I think the calories vary based on flavor But it tastes pretty good.
Always check the labels. A lot of these have a lot of added sugar or other unnecessary ingredients. Or it will boast high protein, but they are talking 2 servings or more (I fell for that one)0
