I do most of my cycling on the weekends and just did my last charity ride of the season: the Tour de BBQ! The rest stops were all local BBQ restaurants, where they served samples of their food along with the usual bike-rider fare. It was supposed to be 35 miles but I think mine was closer to 40 because I got lost a couple of times. Odometer has been acting funny so I'm not sure.
We got out at 7:40 AM, temperatures in the low 40s(Fahrenheit!), cloudy. My fingers and toes were a little numb just from waiting for the race to start. The first hour or two was a challenge: not miserable, but dark, cold and windy. I felt better after the second BBQ stop when it lightened up a bit and I started to see some sun. By the end it was about 60, full sun. I skipped a couple of BBQ stops. The food was great; one rider referred to the small cups of BBQ pork at one place as "barbecue shots". It was enough to keep us going. At the end they had more BBQ and coupons for 2 free beers. Happily, I got there just as a coworker
arrived with her sister and husband and her sister's boyfriend. The coworker and her husband had done 20 miles; the sister and BF did the 35. So, it was a good time for a little socialization. I left the second drink coupon with them and headed home. I've been lounging about eating and reading the rest of the day. Total calorie burn: 1717!
So, for a ride that started out worse than the others, it had a great ending and I'll definitely be up for doing it again next year. All in

Hi Everyone. I am just starting out. I took delivery of a beautiful Diamondback commuter bike yesterday. I'm not in the best of shape so I'm starting slow. We have a lovely 21 mile greenbelt here in Harrisburg and my goal is to ride the whole thing on the 31st so I'm trying to work up to be able to cycle for 20 miles continuously. I just started yesterday:

10/4 7 miles
I have not ridden a bike in a VERY long time so my butt is so tender right now.. I feel like the saddle is made out of 1,000 bees! My legs would like to ride a little longer but I had to knock off after 7 miles and put my backside in the freezer! Until my butt gets broken in, I don't see myself cycling for more than 10 miles on any given day!
My wife doesn't ride very much, but when she rides regularly, the miles come up pretty quickly. Just get out and ride and they will come to you.0 -

My last 5 rides have been on vacation. It's been a lot of fun riding new routes & meeting new people. 3 were group rides & I never met anyone who wasn't the best!!

Hi all. I'm really happy that I scanned the boards and found this topic. I'm Cycling2Live to control my blood sugar levels. Yep, I'm living with Type 2 diabetes and cycling has been a big part of my lifestyle to get the bgl's under control. Not to mentions losing 60 pounds of fat.
Yesterday I completed the Tour of Richmond (Virginia, USA) Grand Fondo. 106 miles of cycling bliss. It was a tough ride because of the unusually warm weather here but I shaved almost 30 minutes off my century PR so I consider it a success.
I'll be posting here but I also would like to invite y'all to "like" my Facebook page: www.facebook.com/cycling2live. I don't sell anything, it's just a way how I can share experiences with other cyclists.

Yesterday I completed the Tour of Richmond (Virginia, USA) Grand Fondo. 106 miles of cycling bliss. It was a tough ride because of the unusually warm weather here but I shaved almost 30 minutes off my century PR so I consider it a success.
That's amazing- was it all in one day? How many hours was it and (inquiring minds want to know) how did you keep it from being a pain in the rear? I use the chamois butter and it helps prevent chafing over 35 miles, but I think I'd be a wreck at 100.0 -

Total riding time was about 5-/12 hours plus a few minutes for a couple of rest stops to refill water bottles, etc.. My legs were screaming at me so I was able to ignore my butt :-)
My goal for next year is to train up and do a few Grand Fondos and at least 2 ultra's (200 miles +). We'll see how that goes <LOL>0 -

sajeffe -- that's a nice progression. Keep adding some distance until you need to plateau for a while, then shock your body by adding a few miles. Add some intensity every now & then too. Maybe ride fewer miles but at a faster speed. Your body will respond to the added work load by burning off more fat.0

Hi all,
[Never tried joining groups / boards etc.... I find it a bit hard to be 'consistent' with my posting, but thought I'd give this a try as I simply loooove cycling, but somehow don't cycle as much as I would like to (and know I should!) - I think maybe if I update here I may feel a bit more determined - let's see... ]
So, for this month, I will not set myself a challenge in terms of miles (actually, I speak in kilometers - the numbers go up quicker lol!) but will keep a record of what I have done, so that my challenge next month will be to improve on this. I've been dreaming for too long to ride London to Whitstable (about 100 km, along the river Thames) but so far have never been consistent enough to 'train' for it - encouragements welcome

Thanks for that. I'm disabled by illness so I have to respect my limits as limits. Last month is the first month I missed my goal. Over the months, I've gotten my longest ride up to 10.1 miles but I "crashed" after that so I keep my rides at less than 7 miles. I would love to ride distances like everyone else, but my health won't allow it. Increasing the intensity is also something I've tried before and again, I have to respect my limits. I met my weight goals a few months ago, so that's not an issue.
Again, I love your advice. I just can't really do it. Though I have noticed this past week that riding every other day instead of every day feels better. I'm not quite as fatigued. Could be a fluke though. Ebbs and flows.
Also, since I began riding in April, I've developed chronic tendonitis in my hips. Anybody else have that problem (or solutions)?0 -

London to Whistable ...it just sounds fantastic!!! Here in the Colonies <grin> we call a 100km ride a "metric century" and it's a very popular distance for many organized rides. It does take some commitment to train up for it There are 2 books on the market that I like for training routines: "The Time Crunched Cyclist" by Chris Charmichael and "The Cyclist's Training Bible" by Joe Friel. Check them out on Amazon.com or maybe at your local bike shop. Charmicheal's programs require no more than 6 hours per week but they have a lot of high intensity routines. Good stuff.0 -

I was going to enter that but didn't have the $$$... Having forgot about the Tour, I took a ride on Saturday and stumbled into part of the Tour's course very close to the end. Maybe within 10 miles of RIR. Funny. And man was it HOT!!!
I still ended up riding 22 miles that day.
