I just started reading "New Rules of Lifting for Women" and I would like to get some free weights for home use. I don't really know where to begin.

Any suggestions? :)

No, I mean what weight to start with. As much as I can lift? Should I be able to do a certain amount of reps with it straight away? A friend recommended a kettle ball, but I don't really know what to use that for.
For best results start with a basic strength based program. Base your lifts on a % of your 1RM. If you're doing a set of 5 that fifth rep should be the last one you can do with decent form. That might just be the bar or you could be a beast and bang out 2plate for reps. It depends on how strong you are.
