What to do about syrup

I make pancakes for my niece about once a week...the recipe I use has whole wheat flour since I dint eat white bread and I substitute unsweetened applesauce for the oil. My problem is that I don't know what to put on it, lol....I have been using mrs butterworth's sugar free only because pure maple syrup has so many calories in it....but I am not crazy about all the additives and the sugar substitute that is in sugar free stuff....is there a such thing as an all natural sugar free syrup.? Any ideas?

Just fit the real stuff into your calorie goals. Eat less of it. Or mix it with raspberries to make it go further.
*I'm not against fake sugar except that sugar free syrup tastes horrible.0 -
Blend up some mixed fuit or strawberries (we always have frozen in the house for smoothies). Add a bit of honey, brown sugar, ripened banana or artificial sweetener. You could even mix that with some yogurt for a thicker topping.0

^^^I was going to say the exact same thing. I use the real stuff, only not a whole lot of it. I also recommend mixing it with fresh berries. Some times I eat my pancakes with peanut butter and sliced banana instead of syrup.0

Use a weighed or measured portion of real maple syrup.
Or use peanut butter and jam.
Or fruit.
Or plain.
Sugar free syrup is an abomination.0 -
Just use regular REAL maple syrup and make the calories fit into your day.0

Natural maple syrup or my favorite a little bit of powdered sugar and some strawberries!0

Greek yoghurt and honey? Fruit, cinnamon, peanut butter0

Well I mean how much syrup are you using really?
I'd do a test with no judgement. Make pancakes and use the amount of syrup you would normally use, just measure the services before dumping on pancake ( scale or measuring spoons ).
From there you can actually go about reducing the amount to something that is still tasty but less than 400 calories ( the calories for half of a cup of Mrs. Butterworth's haha.0 -
Pure maple syrup is natural, not the added crap in fake syrup lol, I'd rather have the real stuff occasionally and just watch the portion. I also really love peanut butter on my pancakes and waffles and it's more filling. I hate sugar free stuff so I'd have the full sugar fake syrup before one with artificial sweeteners, I just don't think they taste good. I wouldn't really worry about it if you can fit it into your calorie goals.0

I use real maple syrup and just use less of it if I don't want that much sugar. Honey and jam are also good on pancakes but aren't much less sugar than syrup. If there isn't a reason that you need low sugar I'd just use less to cut calories.0

I use real maple syrup or natural applesauce on my pancakes and waffles. Love them with applesauce, by the way. It doesn't feel like a sacrifice at all.0
-
I use agave and I add it to my pancake batter for portion control. They come out pre-sweetened.0

If syrup is your thing why not just use yummy natural syrups in moderation? Even a tablespoon per pancake isn't that much.
I personally like defrosted (but still cold) raspberries (about 1 1/2 cups) with whipped cream (about 1/2 a cup). Whip the cream, add the berries. It's 150 Cals for 1 3/4 cups of topping (when I mix the raspberries in the whipped cream deflates a bit), which is enough to top 7-8 pancakes and still feel like a treat. Per pancake that isn't much.
Peanut butter and sliced apples is also delicious.
My son likes pecans, shaved dark chocolate, and a drizzle of caramel syrup with a scoop of frozen greek yogurt (literally greek yogurt that has been chilled for 20-30 minutes).
My daughter is a maple syrup and strawberries girl. She chops and grills the berries and mashes them with a bit of maple syrup and smears it on like jam.
Jam works. Strawberry jam with sour cream is oddly delicious.
You can also go savoury. Grilled balsamic red onions with pears is delicious.
Try something new each week.0 -
I like to top my pancakes with fresh strawberries and ice cream.

Thanks all...I am trying so hard with this lifestyle change I don't want to screw it up....at my heaviest I was 325, I am now down about 50 lbs....but I still have a long way to go. I am trying to keep it at about 1200 a day, so I constantly have to be aware of what I am putting in my mouth.... My pancakes come out to about 70 calories a piece and I use approx. 1/8 cup of syrup for 2 pancakes....if I am correct with pure maple syrup that would be about 240 calories.... That is not as bad as I thought.....0

Here's a good recipe, no oil, whole grain and no maple syrup

As a born and raised New Englander anything other than pure maple syrup (from a small family farm) is not allowed in our home. My husband is known to do shots of maple syrup. (the scene in 'Super Troopers' where they are chugging syrup really spoke to us).
Anyway, just measure it and use the real stuff. It's worth every penny.
Sweeten your breakfast (oatmeal, French toast, pancakes, apple crisp) with the real thing rather than a chemical stew made in a lab.
A little goes a long way!!!0 -
Natural maple syrup or my favorite a little bit of powdered sugar and some strawberries!
Me too, i love blended berries and some powdered sugar. i'm not a fan of artificial maple syrup, sugar free or otherwise.0 -

Yes, if you measure it all out it's not bad at all and worth every bite to have the real stuff. From nature. From a tree.0 -
Maple syrup may have calories but this sweetener is natural like honey. (If it is real?)
I say have a little from time to time! Not every day and not in huge quantities. But a little maple syrup from time to time is a great treat!0 -

1/8 cup is 2 Tbsp. Maple syrup is about 52/Tbsp (depends somewhat on grade), so your estimate (if that is pancakes included) seems about right.0 -

Thank you for the great topping ideas and for suggesting using REAL syrup and real cream! Cool Whip is nasty and fake syrup is nasty too.0 -
My dad uses agave nectar and he likes it better because he says it's less sweet.
Mom and I switched to using whipped cream and strawberries. MUCH lower in calorie and provides a little sweetness and plenty of extra moisture.0 -
I am a big fan of yogurt on my pancakes. Especially strawberry yogurt.0

I have been using Maple Flavored Agave syrup.0

I use 1/8 cup of pure maple syrup on two pancakes (that is basically 1 TBSP per pancake) and that is plenty for me. It is only about 100 - 105 calories. even less than that would even work sometimes, depending on the pancakes.
I've also been known to use applesauce, fresh fruit, whipped cream, or fruit preserves.0 -
I either use the Aunt Jemima's Sugar free syrup or actual Maple Syrup. I don't like any other fake syrup, sugar-free or sugar-full.
That's just me though. Most places don't even have the real stuff when we are out but I'll reach for it if they do...0 -
I use this recipe for blueberry sauce, it does have a lot of sugar, but in comparison to using pure Maple syrup which is all sugar, it isn't bad (we do occasionally use the pure maple though).
I calculated 80 calories per 1/4 cup. Trust me, you won't be sacrificing flavor, my husband who is not on a diet loves it!

Just eat the real stuff. Honestly, I think it says a serving is 1/4 cup, but I only use about half of that.0

Depends where you are eating out. I find that even small diners and family owned restaurants do have the real stuff for a small charge of .50 or $1.00. It's all regional though since normally I see this in New England where the fake stuff is considered evil. :bigsmile:0
