Came across this and I just HAD to share......LMAO!!!!!

According to a study at the University of Westminster, watching horror movies can burn up to 200 calories per viewing. That's about as many calories that chocolate bar you are scarfing has:)

During a scary movie, your heartbeat quickens, causing your blood to pump faster and raising your adrenaline, just like if you went for a brisk walk. Unsurprisingly, movies that make you jump burn even more calories. Of course, if you are like me and can no longer be scared by horror films, I don't think it has much impact.

The Shining burned the most calories out of the ten films screened, with 184 calories. Of course, The Shining is the longest of all the films screened, beating out second-ranked Jaws by a good 15 minutes.

The top ten calorie burners, according to the study, are:

1. The Shining: 184 calories
2. Jaws: 161 calories
3. The Exorcist: 158 calories
4. Alien: 152 calories
5. Saw: 133 calories
6. A Nightmare on Elm Street: 118 calories
7. Paranormal Activity: 111 calories
8. The Blair Witch Project: 105 calories
9. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre: 107 calories
10. [Rec]: 101 calories

Interesting. I'm like you though. No getting scared of the "Scary" movies. I like fun little studies like these.

This is too funny! Does it also factor in jumping in the lap of the person next to you or digging your nails into their hand and squeezing for dear life?

I'm thinking The Blair Witch Project burned about 10 calories for me because I was just angry that it was not scary at all. lol.

Someone should wear a heart rate monitor and test this.

I cannot even sleep with the "Jeepers Creepers" DVD in my room. lol. I don't know why, but that movie scared the living CRAP out of me!
  • Is that X calories that you weren't otherwise going to burn by sitting on your butt? Just sitting down and doing nothing burns calories too.

Elevated HR =/= more calories burned. HR in HRM's are used to estimate % of effort put forth, so I think this is a little BS. You may burn slightly more than if you just sat there as more blood would be pumping but it would be quite a small amount, most likely much less than an extra cal/min.

Is that net? What would the person of burned sitting still for the same amount of time watching nothing? Is it fair to compare different movies? They're different lengths.

I hate the movie Creep, set in an deserted underground tube station with some weird thing/creature slaying people including one grisly scene involving another pet hate of mine , an abandoned hospital operating theatre, knives , blood and a petrified female victim, .....who writes this stuff?
