Do you log standing?

Typically I log while seated comfortably in my favorite chair0

Unless you have an HRM or Bodymedia armband or Fitbit, then I wouldn't log it. As you really don't know what it truly accurate for your body and if you really are burning anything.
ha ha I know! Wish it was true that you burned just standing. But sadly its meager to what people really think!0 -
I have wondered this myself. If and how to log work.
Some weeks I work 40+ hours, some weeks I am not scheduled to work at all, so I don't think the "lightly active" would count on non-work weeks where I am just sitting on my butt watching television or reading.
So, I got myself a heart rate monitor and started logging the days at work where I am actually breaking a sweat.
It's worked for me this way.0 -
I have my activity level set to include those every day things, so I don't log what I walk or lift at work and I don't log walking to the store or housework. This is mostly to make it easier for me to keep track.
What I do log is when I walk to or from work, or when I sometimes exercise.0 -
No way am I spending $100 to lose 15 lbs. I just want to know if my sore legs are worth 1/2 cup of cottage cheese.
You are doing it wrong.
I agree. Fitbit zips are only $60. Also, you can't put a price on your health, if you really want to get fit and healthy invest a little money, time and effort. Standing won't get you there. Let me give you some perspective; today I did 25 squats with 20kg weights and only burned about 30 calories. So no, your standing will barely count for anything.
I disagree that you need a Fitbit to get healthy. I don't use a HRM at all and never have. It can be a helpful tool for some but it's far from necessary.
OP I would not log standing, and I agree that you're likely not sedentary. When I started I was a housewife with no kids and was pretty much a couch potato and I was still lightly active. My advice though is to work on being less sedentary. You can lose weight with adjusting your calorie intake alone, but for health/fitness you need to be more active.0 -
No, I wouldn't log standing. It's not really movement. Get yourself a fitbit and that will tell you how active you are.
I sometimes wonder if one reason my fitbit underestimates my caloric needs is because I'm often standing rather than sitting.
I've never logged standing, but maybe it's not all that ridiculous really. An extra 35kcal an hour would add up.0 -
OKay so let me get this straight...we do log standing, but we do not log raking and we do this all from a chair where we are reading the paper? Is that right so far? Oh and 2 minute sex is also a no. Actually that's a no on other levels too.0
-
no, but make sure you log cleaning and having sex.
sex? two minutes is barely enough time for me to work up a sweat for crying out loud.
What are you doing with the 1:30 extra?0 -
Logging standing (or logging chewing gum, etc) seems so pedantic as to point to deeper issues.
The margin of error in your calorie estimate intake and calorie burn is greater than that anyway. It isn't an exact science.
RELAX and don't try to estimate down to 34 calories (Which you can't do accurately). Just make sure you have a healthy deficit and go from there.0 -
How quickly do you want to lose? Exercise increases your defiict. Yes, even standing. But if you log standing and then eat back standing calories, you're shrinking that deficit, and perhaps even negating it (because chances are good, MFP says, "Yay, you burned100 cals standing! Go have a soft cone!" when in reality it was more like 30 cals and you just undid your week with that soft cone.
I don't eat back any of my calories. I'm working out because I want to lose weight. To lose weight, you have to increase your deficit. I do log EXERCISE (horseback riding, cycling, walking, hiking) and I use workouts to buffer my day if I slip over a bit. Keep in mind I'm big, though. I may change my approach as I get closer to goal.
I used to log every little thing and eat back every little calorie. I gained 60lbs.0 -
I would say no.
Have you tried standing with your HRM on for 5 minutes? What did you get? Nothing. Why log something you aren't doing? Standing isn't exercise... it is... well... standing.
But... if you feel good about logging it? Then go for it.0 -
Can I log writing as exercise ???0

Can I log writing as exercise ???
Are you burning calories? You may be if you are writing *passionately* lol0 -
I log food and exercise into MFP either from a seated position or a lying down position.
Hope that helps.0 -

You just reminded me of a married man I made out with once. (when I didn't know he was married yet). Handsomest man in the universe. Sadly also the quickest. I mean it was just a makeout session. He blamed my thighs. I blamed his touching them. If you can't take the heat stay out of the kitchen! So yeah don't log something like that. Anything you have to play the denial game about...don't log it. Or mention it. Ever ever again. Except online. With strangers. LMFAO.0 -

This past Saturday I worked at an event in which I stood on my feet for over five hours. No sitting, no breaks, some walking around the site and some minor lighting. I was with a group of health practitioners and I jokingly said "well, it's a shame I can't log standing up on MFP" One of the nurses, who had been using MFP, assured that I could. Particularly prolonged periods of time.0

only if you're standing up while doing it !0 -
No, I won't log it. difference is too small between sitting & standing to worry about.
http://www.juststand.org/tabid/637/default.aspx
for someone that weighs 150 lbs :
150 calories / hr Standing
- 116 calories / hr Sitting
= 34 calories/ hr approx difference.
btw, here's another great exercise calculator website:

Yeah, I'm not talking about logging a half hour or an hour of standing. I am not allowed to sit at work unless I'm on break and I have to leave to do it. Wednesday, I'll stand for 7 hours. Saturday, I'll stand for 8. Sunday, I'll stand for 6.5 hours. I'm 'on call' every other day besides today (this schedule is unusual but there's apparently a holiday). If I 'give myself' 30 calories per hour, that's a 200 calorie difference. We're supposed to log something as small as ketchup, why wouldn't the 30 calories an hour matter?0 -

Hence the difference between the words "could" and "should"0 -

I have a fitbit flex...still under $100..and I agree with only logging that which is a intended exercise. Do you burn doing other things yes..but for me if I get in the habit of logging it and eating back those calories..it is more of an excuse to eat more than an actual burn.0 -

If you would like to log it it's your diary, but what most people are trying to say is that it's not going to help you to log it because the calories you burn are negligible between sitting or standing. Also this should already be taken into account in "normal daily activity", If you think standing makes you not "sedentary" then use the next one up "lightly active" or whatever MFP uses when setting up your diary. If you are eating back calories burned because of standing eventually you will be posting something along the lines of "I can't figure out why I'm not losing weight. I log everything and still can't seem to lose anything" or something similar. Good luck!0

No, you might as well log breathing. If you want some cottage cheese make it fit your budget instead of your budget fit what you want to eat.
Perfectly said.
I have a fitbit and I absolutely love it. Keeps me on my toes.0 -

Hilarious! :drinker:
I don't know what everyone else has said, but no I wouldn't log it unless you're walking around a lot (like a waiter). Just monitor your weekly calories and loss, and make adjustments if you need to.
The thing is though, regular daily activity is already acounted for by your BMR x Activity Level. You run the risk of double counting your "exercise".0 -
Yes ! I usually log standing along with digesting food, sleeping, dressing up and brushing my teeth. Just kidding !!
Seriously don't log standing.0 -
I don't log anything that isn't intentional exercise
Would this mean that raking leaves for 2 hours isn't exercise because it's not really "intentional," but necessary? Lol.
Where in my post did I say it isn't exercise? I personally do not log anything that isn't one of my workouts. Do I burn calories doing other things like cleaning or walking my dog? Of course, I just don't log it.
Why?0 -

Seriously? Cleaning your dog is totally different from walking your dog... and giving your dog a bath is about the same as bathing yourself... don't be stupid.
And some people wonder why they're not loosing weight... this whole logging thing is only as good as the data you put in. You have to be smart about how you do your accounting.0 -

I clean houses for extra money and I sweat.... it's hard work and can take anywhere from 4-8 hours to complete. I log it. But, no.... don't log sex.0
