They are all a bunch of greedy self centered politicians. Each party has their own agenda and couldnt care less about the country, they just want to push their own programs. If the entire country collapsed, I don't think they would care as long ad they were able to profit from it.

This. Not "kinda" this or "sorta" this. Exactly this.

To paraphrase Douglas Adams, "Anyone capable of getting himself elected can in no way be trusted with the job."

very true... the argument has often been made that the ones who run for office are the extremists because they are driven by being so far off center..... yet the people they represent are centrists by and large..... it has historically been the downfall of all democracies

I blame the idiots that keep voting in these greedy politicians.......

Everyone blusters about kicking them out, but it seems like no one wants to kick their own guy out. They just want everyone else's guy gone. So if no one is willing to kick their guy out, then all the same guys come back again and again. :grumble:

Disgusting to hear that both parties are making a record-breaking fund-raising haul from this. Who would give money to these creeps? Please donate to a charity for goodness' sake!

To the guy who said that the government did not shut down: You have no clue what you're talking about.

To the OP: The government shut down because of right-wing extremists.

Term limits to all political positions might, might now, stem this nonsense.

But, its not like its gonna change, might as well sit back and watch the buffoons grandstand and engage in brinksmanship.

Washington, corrupts anyone and everyone. Believe it.

Hey! I am from Canada and I just recently heard that the American Government has shut down... yeah yeah I don't get out much ;) ... so can someone explain this to me!!

It's totally disgusting! And the government shut-down cost the American people 24 billion dollars. The sad thing is that even if my husband and I won the lottery we would never earn 24 billion in our lifetime......so from that standpoint, just disgusting how the money is spent foolishly. If I handled our household budget like that......it would get ugly, let's just say!

To the guy who said that the government did not shut down: You have no clue what you're talking about.

90%+ of gov't spending continued during the "shutdown". So the other poster is right, it wasn't really a shutdown.

A real shutdown looks like...no Medicare reimbursements, no Social Security checks, unpaid soldiers and air traffic controllers, etc.

No problem. A real shutdown would have been utter chaos and caused panic in the streets. That's why they always reach a deal 48 hours before checks actually start bouncing.

And they've had lots of practice - this was the 17th federal gov't "shutdown" since 1978.

    Business as usual! :)

    Think of it this way:

The next time someone accuses a woman of "overreacting" to an advance from a man just remember that when a bunch of old, white and rich men couldn't agree on something they shut down the US government.

This genuinely made me laugh. Thanks, I needed that.
800,000 federal employees were sent home on unpaid furloughed 10/1. And while most should receive back pay, eventually, there are contract employees that were furloughed and will not get any back pay.
800,000 federal workers were sent home. 350,000 of them were recalled almost immediately by the Pentagon. So only 450,000 employees were furloughed, out of 5.5 million federal employees. So 94% of the federal government remained operational. That's a 6% reduction in force, not a government shutdown. In any real business, a 6% reduction in force is just business as usual. Only the federal government could consider a temporary 6% reduction in force to be a shutdown.

You should read the other thread that discusses this subject. It's titled "Is anyone else worried that the government might shut down?"

It was because Republicans don't like Obamacare, even though they are the minority in the goverment, and millions of Americans suffered because of their nonsense. You should read the American newspapers online and they explain it in detail.

Yep, you are right. People who don't see this need to get their heads out of their *kitten*. They need to read the news and watch the news. Everyone knows this, even the republicans. All of the newspapers say this, all political commentators, except right wing extremists, say this.

The government did not "shut down," despite the hype from the politicians and media. A few consumer-facing departments went on vacation. The IRS stayed open. The NSA stayed open. The prisons stayed open. The taxes got collected and the checks were paid.

Interestingly, while the National Parks were closed, most of the park employees had to stay on duty -- to run off the people who wanted to use the parks. Park employees who formerly let people in now stood at the entrance and kept people out. So even the parks didn't shut down. They just kept out the visitors.

Both the Republicans and Democrats created a fake "crisis" so that each could scream about the other, and then engage in massive fund-raising campaigns. It seems to be working, too. Both parties are engaged in record-breaking fund-raising activities now that each has proven how bad the other is. In the end, nothing changed. The taxes are still high, the spending is still reckless, the jobless rates are still unacceptable, and neither side has any idea about what to do. So they created a diversion, and people will argue about it until the next election.

I strongly disagree with you. Many people suffered because of the shut down. I won't repeat myself regarding what else I think, it's in my other posts.

I wish I were more politically educated because all I think about is that we should be revolting! I mean really if we ran a business the way the government is running the country ,we would either go bankrupt or go to jail. How can we continue to allow this to happen? How can we change it ? I remember a few years ago when the banks were bailed out in London or someplace ? Sorry I can't remember exactly anyhow the youth of that country threw bricks into the bank windows .Why didn't we do that? We are so lame, I mean I don't want to go to jail is that why we don't do anything?

Before you talk or think about revolting, you really should do your research and educate yourself about what exactly is going on. Why revolt when you don't know what you would be revolting about? Silly. Surf the internet for news sites and spend some time reading, and turn on CNN. You'll learn something.

I hope you are kidding over the rioting suggestion? :noway:

Rioting generally leads to looting, loss of life, damage to people & property, & costs the public a hell of a lot of money. Including the costs of increasing police on the streets, clean up costs afterwards, & even raised insurance premiums.

It's shut down 17 times since 1978. Nothing to see. It's all political theater.

This is something I don't understand. Why are people acting like this is the first time it's happened? At one point, the US government was "shut down" for nearly an entire month.
  • The government shut down, because of an argument they were having over Diet Soda.

^^^^ This made me laugh a bit. Bravo, sir.
