Women who lift manly weights

Do you find that you naturally started lifting that heavy or was it something you worked up to?

Still workin' up to the weight range I want to lift. Don't want to hurt myself, but my goal is to be able to do five pull-ups and bench my body weight.

It didn't take any effort at all. I just walked into the gym and picked up a 100-pound dumbbell and started curling it. I wouldn't call it a "manly" weight, though. It was pink and glittery and it had cats on it.

I tried really hard to find a picture of a dumbbell with a handlebar moustache to no avail. Your description seems to have worked pretty well though.

I wrapped my dumbbells in hot pink duck tape. Just missing the glitter. Excuse me as I do some arts and crafts.

    Not manly at all.

I didn't know weights were gendered. Uh-oh, maybe I bought mine in the girly section of the store.

Everyone has a different starting point. I started in the 10-15 lbs dumbbell range, and they felt heavy! LOL I am still working up to the heavy weights, but compared to what I started with, I'm doing pretty well. I think it's important to start with what you can, strengthen your muscles and connective tissue and move up when you can. Lifting too much weight before you're ready can injure connective tissue.

My weightlifting equipment is all womanly. :)

Started with an empty bar and have been working up (slowly) ever since.

I started with the bar and worked my way up. I used Strong Lifts 5x5, which helped me gain strength and take advantage of "newbie" strength gains. I focused on form to make sure that I didn't hurt myself as well.

But, I'd hardly call my weights "manly" since I often get called upon to spot for my male coworkers, since I can lift more than several of them  Maybe they're just lifting "girly" weights.
