Thyroid and weight issues

Hello all, I've been having weight issues for quite awhile now. Diet & exercise never seemed to get me to my goal weight. I was just resigned to being forever overweight until recently my doctor diagnosed me as hypothyroid. I was told this may be the key to my weight loss struggles, huzzah! I was put on Tirosint which gave me immediate energy -- no more almost falling asleep at the desk at 3pm! However, instead of weight loss, I was having weight GAIN! I asked the doc about this issue. He told me no way, no how is this medicine packing on pounds. In short, I was told to "cut the carbs." However, after doing some online research, I found a forum after forum of people complaining of weight gain from this thyroid medicine despite what their docs said. With the inspiration of a friend who underwent a major weight loss transformation, and the numerous complaints of weight gain, I decided to take matters into my own hands and fight back on weight gain! So here I am, with about a 30lb weight loss goal. Looking forward to getting healthy with you all!

I have never heard of this pill but I am also hypothyroid and I take synthroid.........it did not cause weight gain. Maybe something to ask your physician.
  • I am also hypothyroid but I take Levothyroxine and have taken Synthroid in the past. I have not had any issues with it causing weight gain.

Checked Tirosint online and weight loss was a side affect, not weight gain. How's your blood glucose? If you were falling asleep at 3 PM it might be high carbs at lunch that are the culprit. Good Luck.

Did some research, found several other complaining of gaining weight from this medication as well. Just because it's not the typical response to the medication, doesn't meant it's not possible. I agree with the other poster that if you continue to have a problem, ask for Synthroid. It's the most popular thyroid replacment on the market.

I take Levothyroxine. Never had what your taking. Set yourself up with a healthy calorie count here, log everyday, log everything, and give it a bit of time and see what happens.

I'm hypothyroid as well -- finding the right medication and dosage can be a tricky science. It may take a few weeks to know if the medication is even working. If they haven't done follow up blood work on you then they should.

My aunt is also hypothyroid, struggled with weight but she put her foot down, eventually went so far as to see a thyroid specialist when her regular doctor wasn't listening to her, and got the medication that suited her needs and she's doing much better now.

Tirosint = Levothyroxine Sodium. Tirosint is a pure form of the medicine. There are no fillers, you take it as a geltab. It's been around for a couple of years, but the main active ingredient is the same as the old school meds. My thyroid activity is responding very well to the meds. I started taking meds about 2 months ago, so this may be an adjustment period, but I went from a TSH of 3.22 and a T3, Free of 5.0 to TSH 2.04, T3, Free 2.9. I was on 13mcg and was just recently bumped to 25mcg to get me over the hump and into the healthy range. My number 1 priority with taking this med was to increase my chance of getting pregnant. 32 & hypo...not a great combo for getting preggers! I have done a ton of online research and a ridiculous amount of people complained about weight gain, especially in the abdomen. I believe our bodies all react differently to meds -- there is no 100% this way or that way, but I am here because I felt like I was losing the battle of bulge. No change in diet/exercise yet my weight has been creeping up. Tired of feeling cranky about weight gain, so trying a new avenue! :)

Blood is fine. It's not found in the side effects, but when I did some google searching I found online forums with people saying the same thing as me!

I'm hypo as well for about 9yrs. I've been taking Synthroid for those 9yrs. The dosage has gone up a few times over the years (esp when I was preggo). I have never experienced any side effects with it. It took alot of hard work to loose the baby weight after I had kids ( 2 boys, 3yrs apart) but I did it. Lost 46lbs first time and 40 the 2nd time. Which is what I gained during my pregnancies.
  • Hypo with synthroid for 5 years now. Lost 48lbs here. I really think the key is getting on a consistent exercise program. My weight lost was inconsistent until I committed to 4 days a week of weight training and cardio...oh, and vitamin D supplements.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroid when I was 11 years old. I have been taking Levothyroxine all these years. I find with regular exercise and keeping a food diary the weight does come of slowly.

Give it some time and you will start to see the weight come off. It also helped me to add circuit training in my workouts.
