Why am I gaining weight?

I've probably gained about 10 pounds over the past three months. My friends say it's muscle but still I'm not happy with it.
I would seriously doubt that you've gained 10 lbs of muscle in 3 months. That would be unrealistically high even for a guy.0 -
I don't eat a LOT of nuts by choice, I try to eat what I can find that is gluten free so I can get around 1200 cals in for the day.0
-
I'm sorry it's just something my friends suggested! I feel like a fatass everyday if it makes you feet any better0
-
Continuing on for another possible source of error: I see that you have popcorn (which you eat frequently) listed as 'five cups popped gives 100 calories'. That seems unrealistically low -- to the point where either the cup measure or the calorie count is off.0

Are the nuts jumping in your mouth against your will?
Fresh fruits and vegetables are gluten free, eat them instead. Many can be kept unrefridgerated for several days.0 -
The macros on the Dollar General popcorn in your diary are WAY off. There's no way a 5-cup bag has 85g carbohydrate, 35g fat, 10g protein--and only 100 calories! That sounds more like number of calories from each macro, not grams. I'm guessing they should be closer to 21g carb, 4g fat, 3g protein, and about 120 calories for the bag.0

Nobody is yelling at you about that -- they're just telling you that your friends are wrong.
You can expect to see people respond to that several more times, because people frequently read just the first page of a thread and then start answering.0 -
While I know the topic of this is losing weight, I think you should really focus on how you feel about yourself. You sound scared to death to gain any weight at all, even if it would only be temporary and would eventually result in a loss down the road (from adjusting your calories). 140 pounds at 5'7 is very normal. Not anywhere near over weight, not under weight either. Since you're within a healthy range, I'd just focus on being healthy- exercise, eating healthy, etc- and weight loss will follow0

Read this if you haven't yet, OP. (I linked it earlier as well)0 -
I dont have a car and the closest store is 30 minutes away. I know I shouldn't make excuses but I am trying. Next time if I have a choice between nuts or nothing I will choose nothing.0

Thank you, this weight gain has just been stressing me out a ton lately.0

This is definitely why I suggest focusing on how you feel about yourself FIRST instead of primarily focusing on weight loss. Being healthy also includes having a healthy mind. And putting yourself down like that daily is not healthy. You have a healthy BMI! Be proud of that, and take steps to become even more healthy through your food and exercise choices. Don't just focus on the scale.0 -
Your carbs and proteins are out of wack !!! Carbs 100 or less a day and protein should be 100 or more a day. That way you lose fat and not muscle.
Carbs are not the enemy.0 -

Does the cafeteria serve fresh produce or salad? Can you take some with you? Keep looking for alternatives, there is always a way.0 -
You're not allowed to take food out of the cafeteria . They serve apples, carrots, and mushrooms for produce. Kind of scarce0

^^^Agreed. It might be best to focus on maintenance and a healthy lifestyle while you are in school. 10 extra pounds (if they are even extra, I don't know) is much healthier than years of stress and worry. There is nothing wrong with the way you are now.0 -

That sucks. I'd complain about the lack of choices. Are you in the U.S.? I'd raise a stink here, call local media.
In the meantime, apples, carrots, and mushrooms are better than nothing. I wouldn't go there without sneaking out an apple.0 -
As someone who gained 60 pounds in college, partially by eating the most unhealthy cafeteria food and not using the campus gym, I feel your situation! I see that you said that the nearest store is 30 minutes away but it is worth it to drive the 30 minutes once a week and stock up on vegetables and fruit and things to keep in your dorm room. I did the dorming thing and it was the absolute worst trying to control my food intake, but I wish I had been more diligent in keeping alternative healthy snacks in my room and limiting my cafeteria eating.
I don't know your situation but if there is even a bus from campus that will take you around town, like my college did, or if you know someone with a car or have a car, I would encourage you to take advantage of it and not do what I did
Edit: Sorry, just re-read and saw that you don't have a car. Know anybody with one?0 -
Hi! I was wondering if any of you knew why I was gaining weight. I try to eat 1200 calories a day and I excersize for 30-60 minutes a day. I am 5'7 and 140 lbs and my goal is 5'7 and 130lbs. Feel free to look at my food diary! I eat in a cafeteria at school everyday and I am gluten intolerant if that helps. Thanks so much!!
From the amount of calories you eat I could not say why you gain weight. However if you are gaining you are not in deficit, which could mean that you either forget to log things, or the ones you log have more calories. Either way it means that you eat more calories than you think.
What really concerns me is your health.
I went through your diary back through September and found that even though you seem to live of protein bars and shakes you are consistently 30-50% under in protein, I did not find one single vegetable, only an occasional apple, no dairy apart from the occasional 1/4 cup of skim milk.. You seem to live of bars, shakes, PB, Chex Cereal, pop corn and the occasional 1-2 oz of rotisserie chicken. Where is the food logged you mention eating every day in the cafeteria ( because 2oz of chicken and a spoon of PB is not a meal ). I bet, even though university cafeterias are not famous for their food, you could do better than that.
In general I think just eating snacks, especially if they are almost all high density food is not a good idea. Your body needs also volume, which might mean some more carbs, fiber, fat and protein in your case.
Of course this all has nothing to do with the calorie deficit that is necessary for weight loss, but has a lot to do with general health.0 -
Yes I go to school in the u.s. Haha once I tried to sneak an apple out and got yelled at.0
-
Thanks for understanding! I don't have a problem with controlling how much I eat at all, it's just difficult to get proper nutrition when the cafeteria offers so little gluten free options I will definitely try to get more freh groceries though.0
-
Eating in a cafeteria = having no idea what your actually eating.
Agreed....and 1200 calories per day is pretty low.0 -
Your carbs and proteins are out of wack !!! Carbs 100 or less a day and protein should be 100 or more a day. That way you lose fat and not muscle.
Carbs are not the enemy.
They're not your friend, either. Carbs should not be avoided altogether, but it's important when dieting to get enough protein, fat, and fiber. Carbs make you hungrier, whereas protein, fiber and fat make you feel less hungry. Making sure you eat enough protein and fat will help stop any binging.
The real key to losing weight is accurate calorie counting and consistent calorie logging. Nothing will compensate for those two things.0 -
Last year I was down to 105 lbs due to not eating enough and over working. Do you think could be a reason for the weight gain?0
-
What is wrong with nuts and protein shakes? (I have seen both mentioned in comments as if they are bad/shouldn't be eaten)0
-
I do not know if this has been said or not. But just looking at today for example, something doesn't add up. Your calorie count is at 1000, but when you add up the macros you get 2,355 calories. You're selecting items that are not adding up.
If you are in fact eating the macros that you are inputting, this is why you're not losing. 2,300 is a surplus.0 -

No. You're eating more calories than you are burning. Please read this link.

I agree... Find a friend or classmate with a car who'd be willing to take you to the store with them. Carpooling to the grocery store! Even every other week is better than none at all. Now much fridge/freezer room do you have?
And I also agree with the comments that suggest working on your overall health and how you view yourself.0 -

have you thought about ordering from an online store? shoporganic.com came up when i googled gluten free online stores. also check to see if your local grocery store offers delivery. just a few suggestions for getting healthy fresh food without driving anywhere. another option speak with your cafeteria manager to see if they can offer gluten free options (you can't be the only one at the school with an intolerance).
lastly what about borrowing a bicycle from someone and biking to the nearest grocery store. purchase a few healthy items you can throw in a backpack and bike back to school.0
