Low-Carb Diet The Induction Phase

Hi - I'm 37 years old with two kids and just started on a low-carb diet (the induction phase). I currently weigh 133 pounds at 5'6" but have belly fat that I'm hoping to lose. I would like to lose about 10-15 pounds but not sure if this is the right diet for me as I feel horrible on it and actually have gained 1/2 pound. I have followed the diet to a T and keeping my carbs below 20 a day. I have also bought the Ketone strips so I know I'm in ketosis. Is there a reason I'm gaining weight?

If you feel horrible why are you doing it.. Your weight isn't insane for your height.. maybe you need a good strength training program to meet the goals you want.

Honestly, since you're well within the "ideal" weight for your height, I'd stop punishing yourself with a crazy diet and focus on body recomposition to lower your body fat %. Eat at a moderate deficit and start a good strength training program.
  • I'm sure you're right about the strength training. I really need to probably tone more then lose weight although I feel really good when I weigh about 118. So I would really like to lose 15 pounds.... The problem is that I work from home and live out in the country and have no idea where I would find a good program. I would love to have a personal trainer but I just live too far...

I am 37 with two little people. 5ft2 and weigh 130lbs....just trying to loose the last 18lbs of baby weight (baby 6 months old). I too am doing low carb. I have lost 22lbs so far on it. I find I can't drop down to 20g a day because it too makes me feel bad and when I fancy chocolate I end up binging which takes me back to square one with low carb. So instead of doing any particular low carb diet e.g. Atkins etc I have drawn up my own plan of 50g net carbs a day. It's working for me.

Just to give you an example of my daily diet:

Breakfast - mixed nuts and raisins (50g) with a weight watchers toffee yogurt
Lunch - large roast chicken breast, mixed leaf salad, green pepper, tomato and cucumber
Afternoon snack - a boiled egg, cup of coffee or nuts (just a palm full)
Dinner - steak with tiny bit of Stilton, dry fried red onion and mushroom with steamed vegetables. Sugar free jelly and a low fat hot chocolate.

    Lots and lots of water

Hope that helps you. Your current weight is well within your ideal weight limit though. To me it's about a lifestyle change rather then a diet because I am rubbish at diets. I know people say not to but I do have some low carb chocolate and shakes as a back up for when everyone else are eating chocolate and i fancy something naughty. That way I can have a couple of chocolate bars and a shake on a treat day and not blow the low carb way.

    Good luck.

Have you been tracking your cals as well? I found I overate on the Atkins induction after a few weeks so needed to keep track of cals AND carbs. If you really want to persevere through the pain, get into the low carb group:

I do agree with the other posters though - if it makes you feel terrible, why do it? Eating at a deficit will make you lose weight regardless of the number of carbs. Getting into keto uses up the glycogen in your body and the water it makes you retain, resulting in an initial "woosh" of weightloss (which is generally only water, not fat).

I have some digestive issues so eat low carb to keep on top of them. I only do it because it makes me feel better, not worse.

Ditto to the other posters - at your weight, lifting heavy things is probably going to be the best way to make your body look how you want it to. Sounds like you are skinny fat, not plain out fat (like me!). Have a look at the results in this thread:

If you want to try it out, this stronglifts 5x5 thread is an easy place to get started:

you might get better information there.

Have you considered Calisthenics, or bodyweight exercises since you live far from a gym. Youtube has routines.
