wait wait... what?!?!?!?

Apparently a hot chocolate at Max Brenner is more than 600 calories. How on earth do you get 661 calories in a hot chocolate???

It is 250 mils of milk and ... I'm guessing ... 50 grams of chocolate?

Are you sure there's no heavy cream in there to make it tasty? Likely there's something in the mix besides chocolate.

I girl I work with has packed on 20 pounds this year from a new Starbucks habit....and she cant give it up! Look out for liquid calories, they pack a punch!
  • I really did not consider how many calories were in drinks until I started counting calories. I was amazed at how many calories I was getting from hot cocoa, cokes, starbucks, and the like.

Sugar (to disguise the bitterness of the cocao) and direct fat....both in high dosage. Sugar is actually addictive...

Lots and lots of sugar, some heavy cream and you have a calorie bomb.

Heavy cream and lots of sugar.

Same way as they pack all those calories into Starbucks coffees. :P

Max Brenner's hot chocolate is more like drinking a hot chocolate pudding. Lots of cream in it, lots of chocolate, and whole milk all the way. Definitely a sometimes and then still split it food.

Is this from mfp or the company. If it is on mfp I have noticed recently (specifically with 3 pieces of a cadbury Daim bar) the calories are way out. In my case almost 10x what they should be.

I was quite surprised at how many calories is in hot cocoa, as well. I get laid-off tomorrow. Thank God, that hot cocoa machine is too close to my desk on a cold day. lol

    Starbucks Venti Mocha Frappuccino
    Cal: 500
    Total Fat: 17g
    - Saturated Fat: 10g
    Cholestorol: 55mg
    Total Carbohydrate: 83g
    Dietary Fiber 1g
    Sugars 79g
    Protein 7g

Yep, not all that great. How about a "healthy" drink?

Blimey Limey (With normal sugar, not Splenda) (One of the the highest in calories at Tropical Smoothie)
    Calories: 476
    Total Fat: 0
    Carbohydrates: 100g
    Dietary Fiber: 4g
    Sugars: 115g
    Protein: 2

Switching to Splenda drops about 200 calories and 40+ carbs/sugars.

The best one I can see is the Rockin' Raspberry with only 139 Calories with Splenda, 7g of Fiber and 4g of protein.

Moral of the story: You need to read the label before you eat/drink.

Probably whole milk, sugar, heavy cream, and cocao...probably a rather large cup of cocao too. You'll be surprised by the caloric density of many things...

Honestly... just don't drink it every day.

I would rather have the real thing (made with good chocolate, whole milk, and cream) every so often as a treat then drink the junk in an envelope (and "diet" versions especially) daily. Over time I have come to realize that, for me, sometimes the higher calorie item is worth it due to taste and experience. Just fit it in as a treat.
  • I saw that someone mentioned sweetners.

Is sweet and low healthy for you in terms of calories? I tried splenda but I dislike it very much and sweet and low seems the only sugar substitute that I like. Are there other nice tasting substitutes out there that I don't know of?

    lulz.

    Their hot chocolate is:
    Sugar
    Cream
    Whole Milk
    Chocolate

Ever wonder why it's so hard to get something so simple to be like theirs at home? :D

That reminds me, those hug mugs are epic, great for hot buttered rum.

Try liquid stevia, Skinny Girl or something similar. One good squirt is as sweet as 3 packets of Splenda or Equal, and it's a natural sweetener with no calories. No metallic aftertaste like Sweet & Low.

When I used to work in a coffee shop, we used 12oz of half and half, 2tbs of Ghirardelli syrup, and a 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla syrup to make our hot chocolates. Say 800 cals of OMG goodness.
It takes a lot of dancing to work off one of those.

Thanks, I've not heard about Stevia or Skinny girl and I will try it.... Yea, the metallic aftertaste is a downside to Sweet and Low. I usually have to chew gum afterwards.

My sister puts BUTTER in her hot chocolate. There are dozens of ways to skyrocket the calorie count/deliciousness of any food.

I think this is the winning reply! (at least for me) I'd much rather have the "real" version of things like this on a rare occasion than "diet" versions more often.

Use real sugar or honey. I find you get a better sweetness/flavor with them for less then you do the artificial stuff.

The company doesn't advertise their calorie content. It's from MFP :)
