weight vs dress size

I'm glad someone posted this, because I've been wondering about it a lot too. From what I've read elsewhere, it varies a lot -- not only between stores, but between people because everyone carries their weight differently. I'm in the low 180s and nearly 5'10" tall, and I wear between a US 12 and a US 16 (depending on the store). But a friend of mine weighs about 195 lbs and is several inches shorter than I am, and she wears only a US 10-14.0

I agree with others who say it's hard to predict just by guessing. I'm between 5'6" and 5'7" tall and 138 lbs. I wear a US 2 to a US 6. I'm pear shaped and wear an XS or S in shirts. I do NOT do dresses lol, but I bought a size S maxi dress from a boutique recently and it's a very flowy size SM. I actually LOVE it!0

5'4, 140lbs, I wear a size 4 usually. Most of my weight's in my butt Which normally doesn't have much of an effect on dress size unless its super tight all over.0

Don't know if this helps, since I don't really wear dresses. Right now I'm 165lbs, wear between US size 6 - 10 in pants. Like most have said, it depends on the brand and style. I do own one dress, it's a size 10, but I bought it when I was about 10lbs heavier.0

In the past I wanted to know this answer as well and there is no accurate answer. I found that different stores measure differently! M and S I am still a 14, Next I am a 12. Some of my size 16 clothes still look OK as well.
I am 5ft5 like you, and 147lbs.0 -

I am from the U.S. I started off at 190 lbs. and I am now at 164 lbs.
Jeans went from a U.S. size 16 to a U.S. size 10/12.
I am 5'8"0 -
I am 128lbs and am a UK size 8 (US size 4). Last time I was 128lbs, was 16 yrs ago. Then, I was a UK size 12 (US size 8). Forget the weight number, dress size is based on measurement.
ETA - I am 5'1"0 -
Check out mybodygallery.com - I love that darn website. It shows you real people with their height, weight and sizes listed and you can sort by body shape/type.0

April 2012 was 252lb (or 18st 1lb) and wearing a UK size 22/24. I'm now 193lb (13st 11lb) and wearing a UK 16. I'm 5'9" tall and would like to lose another 25-30lb or so.0

I'm 5'8" and I think I'm around 120 (haven't weighed lately- TOM) and my jean size is a 0-1 at most places. But I have worn the same size while my weight has varried from 103-125 so I must hold weight in a strange way.0

I am around 5ft 5" (166cm), weigh about 101kg or 222lbs. I am a pear shape so small waist, larger hips.
I wear a Sizes 16/18/20 depending on cut. Mostly 18 for dresses. 16 for tops. AUSTRALIA size0 -
I'm 145lb and UK size 10 on the bottom and 12 on the top. I really don't think you can judge this by weight though as different people will have different LBM.0

I'm 5'3 199 pounds and I wear sizes 8, 10, 12, and 14. I'm very top heavy (24 JJ) so my shirts are large and extra large.0

I wore an American size 22 at 307 lb and still wore a 22 at 262 lb! That kind of fascinates me, as it is almost a 50 lb range of weight.
Now I am size 16/18 at 212 lb.
I think the same thing's happening with me that happened between sizes 22 and 18, though. I have a few size 14 dresses that look pretty good, they are just a little too small. Meanwhile, my 16's and 18's are both getting similarly baggy so I think I'm going to "skip" size 16 like I did size 20.
If it helps, I am 5'8" and hourglass shaped.0 -
As has already been said it depends on height & build as well as the cut of the garment . I had this conversation with a sales assistant recently & she said that she could be anything from an xs to a large in the stock in her shop & she was stick thin ! Why can't the manufacturers all get together & decide what measurements denote a certain size and stick with it !0
