Note to parents who drop kids off at school

    At my son's current and previous 2 schools, the car line supervision has been pretty slack. The thing that gripes me most is how so many parents insist on dropping their kid(s) off DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF the door they have to go in. Multiple kids often mean multiple stops for some parents.

    It's no wonder we have such an obesity problem. Can't walk and extra 15 feet? Seriously? Not to mention it really fouls up the flow of traffic.

    I was so thankful when my son decided to join the jazz band this year. He goes an hour early, 3 days a week, which means I only have to deal with drop-off on Tuesday and Thursday. On those 2 days I try to get him there a few minutes before the big rush, just so I don't have to deal with the nonsense.

    SLOW DOWN and PAY ATTENTION!!! This morning an 8 year old was hit by a parent driving too fast and not paying attention in the drop off at the front of the school. Child was sent to Children's hospital in Oakland via medivac. Don't assume kids follow all the crossing rules! Please slow down.
    As a volunteer crossing guard, I see way too many people driving to fast during school pick up and drop off. The extra 5 minutes it takes to be safer ISN'T going to change how your day turns out, but could if an accident happens.
    Keep our children safe.

    Another note to parents dropping off their kids at school: Please pay attention to the crossing guards. They aren't there to annoy you - they are there to keep people safe!

    My son is a crossing guard at his elementary school - I can't believe the stories he tells me of adults blatantly jay walking and trying to drive through intersections when the guards are trying to stop cars, and of the verbal abuse from adults who don't want to follow the rules.

    Update: child suffered a broken hip and a some head trauma. In stable condition, but recovery is going to take awhile.

    Luckily enough I have authority to tell parents who can't abide, that they can't come to drop off their kids in my area. My police dept will support decisions made and enforce them too. People just need to understand that SAFETY should be the number on factor when on school property and worry about their other chores and issues they have to deal with later. Full focus should be on awareness during school pick up and drop off.

    Can you elaborate on who delegates the authority to you, to decide who may drop off their kids, and who may not, and how a Police Agency could possibly support/enforce these decisions without evidence or some sort of an incident, without risking a lawsuit.

    I walk my 6th grader across the parking lot every day for just this reason. I trust her to look but I don't trust self-important parents who don't pay enough attention to their surroundings and haul *kitten* in the parking lot.

    ETA: I was hit by a truck in high school. It was partially the driver's fault for speeding in the lot and partially mine for walking between 2 buses. Please teach your kids not to walk between 2 large vehicles into a parking lot or street. Drivers just can't see you if you pop out.

    Handbook given out of the beginning of school year emphatically stating a strict drop/off pick up policy in the area I monitor. Reported incidences are investigated by the local police (first with a phone call and then a visit if contested). Authority is given to me by the police department to deny UNSAFE drivers access if warned more than 2 times. All reports are documented to review and as evidence in case a parent decides to make it a lawsuit.
    No incidences of non compliant parents have gone any further than contact by the police to inform them that their child's statis doesn't allow them for drop off in the back area of the school. It's really a non issue if they just follow the protocol.

    Poor kid.

    I love my daughter's school.
    The children remain inside the school building in a large hallway area.
    They all must sit until their name is called when the parent pulls up right in front of the door.
    Then each child is personally escorted one by one to the car by a teacher.
    In the mornings we drop our kids off right in front of this same door.

    The school consists of three campuses so there is a shuttle bus between the schools along with several regular school bus routes and before/after school care.

    People can bash private Christian schools all they want, but due in large part to the character and integrity of parents and school staff, we have not had any car line safety issues with our kids.
