Can someone explain the whole carbs/fiber thing?

I always hear people counting "net carbs" which is something to do with taking the total amount of carb in a food and subtracting the amount of fibre and then counting that number towards your carb total...
for example 1/2 a cup of fiber one is 26 carbs and 15g of fiber so 26-15 = 11 net carbs
Just wondering if anyone can explain where this comes from and why people do it?

Well, this would be for a low carb diet. A popular low carb diet is Atkins and Keto. Most people want to stick to under 20g of carbs a day. If you aren't on a low carb diet you don't have to worry too much about counting net carbs, but do make sure that you're still not taking in crazy amounts because this is what leads most people to weight gain, also because they aren't active. :P0
