Going over on sugar!

Hi EV1, I recently came back to MFP and am feeling really good about it. I WANT this and I'm going to MAKE IT HAPPEN this time! The mindset is there. No alcohol for 4 days (usually Sundays get me bad) and have stayed at (or a few under) my calorie intake everyday. The only problem I'm running into is going over on my sugars! My daily goal for sugar is 24 grams. Today, for example, I had oatmeal for breakfast and grapes for a snack which put me at 24 grams! With my lunch, I'm already over.

My question is...how badly is this going to affect how much and how quickly I lose? I know protein usually don't make a huge difference, but this is sugar.

Thanks in advance.

  • I struggle with the same thing. To be honest, I've found that putting in my "meals" a day early (before I eat them) helps me to see what is going to make me go over on my sugar. I used to snack on grapes all the time until I saw how much sugar I was eating... now I opt for an apple or something similar, but with less sugar. I only eat oatmeal on days that I'm doing a lot of cardio. Instead, I opt for egg whites and 1 piece of whole wheat toast.

Planning ahead makes all the difference. Good luck!

It's ok to go over in sugar. When MFP is talking about sugar they mean processed sugars like in sweets, cakes etc, not natural sugars found in fruits, oats etc.

I rarely watch my macros (except sodium & cholesterol) & have lost 28lbs since joining MFP in July. I have gone over my sugar everyday in those months (except maybe 7 days worth). I actually typically am around 40-50 grams of sugar daily. Once I hit my first goal, I'll probably start gandering at my macros more. I don't want to overwhelm myself. Good luck!

You'll find dozens of threads about this. Don't worry about it unless you're diabetic and have to. Fruits are going to do that. The "sugar limits" here are very low. I just look at total carbs.

Thanks! Your comments make me feel much better. I guess I didn't realize how much natural sugar has, but it's good to know that they are OK.
