I have to have 2 sizes of pants - always - even before the weight loss i gain a FULL PANT SIZE!!! But it does come off after the first day or two. I just up the water intake and try really hard not to skip the gym, but the pain is sometimes just too much to exercise thru...those months i move my rest day and push on thru...
edited for spelling0 -
I always go up about 2 lbs just before and then it's like "oh yeah, THAT'S why". The bloating sucks but I just try and drink more water because it seems to help. By the middle of it all, things start looking better so there is that to look forward to, but yeah, I actually avoid certain workout tops because I analyze myself in the mirror and think I look fatter in the day preceding and the first day of.0

Weight in once a month during cycle that way you can be happy when you lose the fluid.0
-
By the time I was 50, I was really ready for the periods and PMS to stop. .when the PMS and periods stop, however, you go through menopause. . . that's when the weight problems really start. . . it's much more difficult to lose weight and keep it off.0
-
The most common problem with the cycle is water retention. parsley is a great diuretic. add to smoothie or juice. stay away from salty foods too.0
-
I have the same problem, but start taking dandelion and parsley to combat the water weight gain. And drink lots of water!0

It is the worse, I have experience this kind of weight loss consistently for the last 2 months. My body cycle - ovulation and period week 1 pound gain. The other 2 weeks I have lost 4-5lbs. Technically because I am adding the 2 pounds in those weeks, I am actually losing 7-8 pounds a month which is then the healthy 2 pounds of week. To maintain and drop, I drink a lot more water than the normal 8 glasses a day. I have an 18oz water bottle that I go through about 3 a day. I eat heavy dinner type meals at lunch so I continue to burn and I eat lunch lite foods at dinner. The switch has helped. Also during those weeks, I do Bikram Yoga to sweat out the bloat and double up on the Zumba or the Aerobics to sweat it out as much as I possibly can. I hope this helps!! Good Luck! :happy:0

I feel your pain! If I have salty food during my period, my waist can increase by 4 inches overnight! I look 6 months pregnant! Depressing, but I know it is not real weight. Sometimes it can take over a week to leave, though.
The only thing that helps a little is watch your sodium. And that means watching processed food of any kind. Even pancake mix is full of sodium!0 -
As everyone else has said there is nothing you can do about this. I usually gain 3-5 lbs in my stomach every month. It’s awful. When I’m working out and I bend over I feel like I can actually see the water in there (I don’t wear a tshirt when I work out at home). But a day or two later it’s gone. I personally just avoid taking any measurements (including weight) during this time. No point in getting discouraged over something you can’t control.
ETA: Avoid salt and keep up with the exercise.0 -
This past month wasn't as bad as the previous months. I drank a lot of water and worked out days leading up to it. I kept my salt in check. I had minimal bloating, if any. It was like a Christmas day miracle! lol0
-
The problem for me is I actually want to eat less when I'm on my period. It takes a lot of effort to make sure I at least keep a healthy intake of 1200 calories, and I usually work off at least 700 of those calories at the gym (I go twice a day). So my curiosity is how to minimise the bloating when my want for food decreases during the visit from 'aunt flow'.0

Wow, you can really see how much we all have in common here! As women, we ALL experience this - what solidarity!
I'd like to add something. I believe that this issue offers us all a special opportunity that men do not have the chance to take advantage of.
And that is...the opportunity to grow in inner character and strength - which is ultimately what we NEED in order to have long-term success in our journeys.
When we hit those days each month and start feeling like crap, we have the unique opportunity to turn our feelings of *powerlessness* (i.e., "I'm ugly", "I'm fat", "Those guys at the gym snicker at me", "see? I'll never lose weight!", etc.) into feelings of POWER and initiative and freedom, and to take control of our negative inner thoughts and turn them into something positive. Which will only benefit us in the long run.
Yes, I know this sounds nuts. But hear me out.
Most overweight gals struggle with two things: low self-worth and impatience with the slow, lengthy process of weight loss. "Aunt Flo" challenges both and challenges it HARD. Not only do our bodies temporarily change (for the negative), our hormones rage and we *feel* generally terrible about ourselves for no reason whatsoever.
So we have a choice:
1.) Submit to Aunt Flo's taunts and abuse, roll over, believe the lies I quoted in the fourth paragraph, and curl up in a ball in tears; or,
2.) Straighten our mental spine, look her in the face and say, "F* YOU, Aunt Flo - I know your tricks and deception - but it's not going to work with me. I am losing weight slowly, but steadily. A little water weight isn't going to knock me down. The number on the scale at the END of my journey, which I will reach, is what matters - not a couple of extra lbs a couple of days a month! I am beautiful and I am successful - despite what you say. I am exercising. I am eating within my calorie range. I WILL prevail, no matter what you say!!"
Get mad, people! Don't roll over! YOU ARE WOMAN - YOU SHOULD ROAR! Turn this thing around. Make it your springboard into the pool of success! In the process you'll develop patience with the process - patience you desperately need to go the long haul. You are stronger than a couple of bumps in the road!!
And never forget it!0 -
Weight loss is going great, but I'm just wanting to know if any other ladies experience any problems around 'that time of the month' to keep already lost weight from coming back? Even if only temporarily. Bloating gets sooooo annoying around this time, and can sometimes undo some of the renewed confidence gained from the weight loss.
Have tried every adjustment you can think of to my diet to deal with it, and I've now run out of ideas!
Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you ladies! xxxx
Don't weigh in during that time, wait about 3 days after and you will have more accurate results.0 -

It is pretty normal to gain weight/bloat when it's your time of the month. I try not to worry about it because if I stress over the small weight gain I will get depressed and eat things I don't need or start feeling the need to over exercise. Just eat your normal diet drink plenty of water and tell yourself it will be over soon lol0 -

Just out of curiosity, are you saying you're only eating 1,200 a day while exercising twice a day for a total of 700 calories burned?0 -

Sorry, what I meant was - are you only eating 1,200 calories when burning 700 a day? (I'm asking because I'm concerned and wondering if you realize that is actually not safe and will ultimately sabatoge your success).0 -
Same happens to me. I have to keep reminding myself that it'll be gone in a week. This time around I was carb loading at the same time. I felt like a freaking house. Oddly, the day after the marathon my tummy returned to it's normal flatness and all was well.0
-
With me it is inevitable, but limiting salt helps. I just ignore the scale for a week and it doesn't bother me.
I am shocked that there are people at your gym acting that way. I have never come across one rude/critical person ever in a gym in 13 years that I can think of. They need to be the ones worried about their crappy attitudes, rather than you be worried about some temporary fluid gain.0 -
Just accept that your weigh ins before and during your period are not an accurate reflection of your weight loss. Drink lots of water, avoid overeating and carry on.
THIS!0 -
First, sorry to hear you've got a group of D-bags at your gym. I've never experienced anything like that at any gym I've gone to in my entire life (many years of which I've been fat).
Second, those blobby pounds you referenced are something that you feel and experience much more than anyone outside of you can actually "see." Nobody looks at you during those 5 days and thinks "she really porked out this week." It just doesn't happen that way. But, I totally get that that is probably how you feel when things are too tight and maybe the water retention makes your fingers swell and such. It sucks. But it's life and we must proceed. As many responses have already stated...there isn't much to be done about the bloating. Just kick it's *kitten* on the treadmill and wait a few days to weigh in.0 -
Sadly, it's just kinda part of something we have to deal with. There's just some nastiness that comes with our wonderful monthlies and I think it's more about understanding that there's going to be some fluctuations for a week or so.
My main issue is being so ridiculously hungry for the week before my period. It's unbearable sometimes lol! Lots of fibre!0 -
Just try not to weigh yourself the days before or during. That way when you jump on that scale after......you should have a nice drop in numbers b/c it's been well over a week since you weighed yourself.0
-
To that, I would say find a new gym. Life is too short to deal with negative people when you don't have too.0
-
KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON.0

4-6 pounds every single month. I don't really worry about it because I know that it will all come off in a few days. I have a pair of stretchy jeans just for that week, and I don't beat myself up over it. I find I do tend to eat a bit more in the days prior to my period, but once it starts I lose my appetite and eat less, so it all balances out in the end.
I would say if it bothers you, just take that week off from weighing yourself every month.0 -
You can try drinking lemon water too, it seems to help me when I feel extra bloated. Just squeeze a lemon wedge or two into your ice water and it really does help to de-bloat since its a natural diuretic.
I was so excited for my monthly to come this month because I felt like a balloon. My husband laughs because I get so excited when it arrives! Just focus on how you will feel when you step on the scale once it goes on its merry way! Until next time......!0 -
In my experience, even if the weight comes back at that time due to bloating, it drops back off when my period is over. It’s just part of the fun!
Very very true! I'm just not enjoying the feeling of becoming 'Mrs.Blobby' on the treadmill. Does not do much for one's self esteem. Especially when there's a clique of body builders at your gym who don't think you can hear them smirking at you whilst you work out. - In defence for the people at my gym, its only a group of 5 people who do that, everyone else is pretty supportive or busy with their own gym regimes; but honestly, they can be a bit off putting sometimes. So having the 'period pounds' appear doesn't exactly help the situation.
Anyway, back to topic, I have cut a large part of salty foods out of my diet. No chips (crisps for the brit folks), I don't add salt when I'm cooking. I guess I may just be ranting after having been able to keep a steady drop in my weight for the last 3.5 weeks; so its a little annoying to be thrown back due to the 'woman's monthly curse'.
What does the twittering of some numbnuts at the gym matter? Just get on the treadmill and ignore them....or walk outdoors during 'that' week.
If this is your first month then it will be depressing for you when this happens but it's just part of process - some weeks you gain, some weeks you lose...just keep going through it. Many people find that the week after a period shows a good loss.0 -
When its that time of the month, I usually just throw the diet out the window and give into my cravings, don't get me wrong I still eat mostly healthy but if I want a giant bacon cheeseburger, I will have my cake and eat it too lol Try to stay active and drink lots of water.0
