Excess Protein

I reached a point in my life that i have finally said THATS it. i been going to the gym for about a month. i do about 5-6 hours per week of gym time. I want to focus on eating better and the food diary looks to be very helpful. I am at 180lbs and i want to drop to 160 as my first goal and then build from there. my recommended intake is 1700 calories per day and ive entered the foods that i plan on eating and i hit the mark dead on EXEPT in the protein section. i have an excess of 60-140 protein per day. I been reading that protein is needed to maintain muscle tissue and im wondering if the excess protein is fine or should i change my feed intake to bring that down to zero. i have changed it some but as i bring down my protein level i cant find foods that seem to bring my calories up yet not increasing my protein. I have developed a basic work out routine that will consist of 5 hours of cardio per week and upper and lower body resistance training. i will be burning about 557 calories per 45 min on the elliptical and a moderate weight lifting routine. Now my question is, what do i do??!! do i lower my intake to hit the goals? if so what can i eat to gain calories and not over pass my protein requirement. Im looking for a mentor to help me out, i am ready for a change in my life and any help to make the path a success would be greatly appreciated.

Hey there. Good for you for making a change! In short, MFP macros are set ridiculously low for protein. For retaining or building muscle you can plan on .7-1 g of protein/lb of lean body mass. So your protein intake will depend on your body fat or lean body mass. Here are some good links to get you started with figuring that out.

Here's a link to an old thread concerning macro break down with additional links:

Yes 1g/lb lean body mass, some people go to 2g/lb. It won't hurt you unless your doc said you had a condition to worry about it, otherwise don't worry about it as long as you are getting some fats and carbs too. More carbs before workouts could help your workouts if you are tired.0

Sounds like you may need add in different foods to hit your protein needs. I've had a time trying to hit all my macros perfectly which rarely happens. I'm usually over or under one or the other but try to stay as close as possible.0
