Stationary bike calories burned vs MFP. Which one?

Okay so, I use my stationary bike for an hour every day, on an uphill/downhill mode. The stationary bike gives me a total of 1000 calories burned, however when I enter it into my exercise diary on MFP, their total is something like 468? I don't have a heart rate monitor so it's either go with what the bike says or what MFP says. What do you guys think? So far I've been going with what MFP says as I'd rather underestimate than overestimate.

  • I've done and wondered the same. An hour on the stationary bike would tell me I had burned off 1000 cals, but I think that is not the case. I think it's more like 7-10 cals per minute, so if you did 60 mins on the bike you would burn between 420-600 calls. Big difference from what the bike says.

I would take the lower number. I have a HRM and use a stationary bike and the most it has ever given me in an hour is about 460 and that's on a high level hill setting. I think 1000 calories in an hour is a huge overestimate - I don't' even burn that running.

I would eat back what MFP says, that would be about half, and see how you feel. You can add the exercise as a personal thing and add the correct calories yourself if you need more of the calories to burn. Makes sense?

My new exercise bike and MFP seem to match up quite well and it works out around 100 calories per ten mins for me, so I'd stick to what MFP says, as DenialTwister says, it's upto 600 cals usually for an hour, though this will be depending on how you're fast you're going and how much resistance you're getting. Never the less I'd go with MFP for safety, if you're getting extra, it's a bonus that you'll see in your weight loss over time.

Keep up the good work though!
