Late night workout recovery

I usually have a late night Friday sports league where we finish around midnight and Saturday mornings I go swimming early in the morning (with a jog beforehand to warm up). I'm usually hungry after hockey Friday night and swimming in the morning so I was wondering if a whey shake after hockey to give my muscles a recovery meal but also hold me over until my 7am swim. Any thoughts on having a protein shake so late before bed?

Sounds like a good plan. Try it, see how it makes you feel. Sorry, no science to quote on the benefits/problems with your question...

If you are not getting enough protein daily to maintain/gain muscle (0.8 - 1.0 grams per pound of weight), then your body will probably benefit from the shake. (So, if you are 200 lb for example, shoot for 160 to 200 grams of protein/day). The body is an amazing thing, and will make the best use of it, sleeping or not.

Thanks. I'm in an odd spot- lost 89 pounds and about 5 pounds away from
A goal six months ago. It's a bit strange after six months of disciplined eating to change my normal food intake to support a new goal. Nice to have folks giving suggestions.

I'm at 230 and I'm not trying to get bulky- rather have some decent definition and I train pretty hard so I'm trying to find my new balance

I go to bed about 1 to 1 1/2 hours after I get off work so I have to eat right before bed (don't get a break during work). I found that a protein shake (actually I used Shakeology--not a BB COACH!) worked great.
  • Whey protein will help your immediate recovery, after practice. Casein protein releases over time, so in your case while you sleep. You can buy both of them separate or find a recovery drink that has both. I personally use the Herbalife24 Rebuild Strength, it has both proteins.

  • Look up casein protein before bed. I think it would be great for you
