Keurig coffee coffee coffee coffee coffee coffee coffee...
Once again, I am reaching out to MFP land for opinion, advice and wisdom.
I am a SERIOUS coffee drinker! I drink about a pot and a half a day. No flavors. No whipped cream. Just coffee.
I received the Keurig as a gift but I am debating whether it is practical for me. It seems that it may be expensive to make my daily quota and less convenient, as I would be brewing all that time rather than twice a day.
Does the Keurig machine make coffee any better than a regular coffee pot? I do love a GREAT cup of coffee!
Any thoughts?

Got a Keurig for x-mas. Personally, I like it because of the flavored coffee (still 0 calories). Also the tea. Was able to come home last night frozen and with the early signs of a sore throat and make the fastest easiest Lemon Zinger tea ever.
For me and my husband it works because we don't have to brew a whole pot that will sit all day once we leave for work. And if one of us wants only one cup of coffee, a whole pot is not necessary.
I like it. I don't know about whether or not its brewing is inherently better, but I certainly see no harm in it.0 -
If you aren't into flavors and are drinking a lot of coffee is really isn't the item for you.
I received this item as a wedding gift, we registered for it because we are NOT coffee drinkers. We wanted this for guests and the occasional hot chocolate since it makes only 1 cup at a time and you got to give you guests a lovely choice with the carousel of options. Its also much more expensive than regular coffee making methods at about $1 a serving so it may put you in the poor house if you drink several a day, lol0 -
My Dad & Husband both have a Keurig & they love it! My Dad has a regular coffee pot as well because he drinks more then one glass a day & it can be expensive to keep buying the little Kcups! You can sometimes find them at Sears on sale if you decide to keep it. Walmart & Target also have different brands of the Kcups as well so you can just shop around and find the price that fits your budget. I say if you are a big coffee drinker with no budget keep it. If you have a budget I'd say get a regular coffee pot, buy some gourmet coffee and enjoy. Oh and just so you know they have a an adapter/filter where you put the kcups at you take that out and replace it with the filter. In that filter you can put your favorite coffee. You can buy the adapter/filter at Walmart, Target, Sears. Just look in the coffee pot section.0

I adore my coffee too!
I had a one-cup machine, and I liked it for the ease of use. It was nice to take it places if I had to, or if I had company. However, I'm getting into a lot of different styles of coffee with different roasts, so I'm back to my old coffee machine because I love freshly ground coffee beans.
If I had to compare taste-wise, nothing beats the fresh ground beans in a traditional coffee maker. Plus it seemed to make the coffee hotter.

You do not have to use the premade K Cups - there is a filter you can purchase if it didn't come with what you have.
All you do is put the filter adapter in it with your own ground coffee. I doesn't make it more expensive. And you don't have a pot sitting around - if you are really into drinking good coffee, you know it goes bad after a short time, especially decaf.
Anyway - get the filter and put in your own coffee.

Depends on what model you have. If you have a model that works with the My K-Cup, then no it's not too expensive and all you need to do is buy the My K-Cup ($15/$20). But if you have one of the smaller brewers and have to use the k-cups then yes, probably too expensive. I have one cup a day and put Dunkin' into the My K-Cup and it's much cheaper than going to DD and buying a medium coffee everyday.0

The best thing ever! I love the variety and feel like I have my own barista in my kitchen. If you drink alot of coffee then get the My K-cup, which allows you to brew coffee from your normal coffee brand . I love having a fresh cup of coffee each time, not being tied down to one flavor or brand, and not having to worry about wasting it or the coffee becoming old. I say keep it and Enjoy!0

Do you leave your Keurig on all of the time? Or do you set the program for Auto OFF or ON/OFF timer? Seems strange and a waste of electricity to have that blue light glowing all of the time.0
-
We use the Keurig every day. I like to brew the coffee and then put a packet of diet hot chocolate (25 calories) in it. Chocolate coffee!
Mine goes off by itself. Not sure I set it that way. But it doesn't stay on all day.0 -

The one I use in the breakroom turns off at a certain time and turns back on in the morning. Of course you can turn it on earlier if needed.
In a Mythbusters type line of thinking, I wonder if it's cheaper to keep it running or turn it on and off a lot. It does have to ramp up the heat quickly which could pull a lot of juice...and the blue light might be an LED which wouldn't be that much usage. I think the power usage would be more from keeping the water hot than the light being on...maybe we should call Jamie and Adam hehe0 -
I also drink about a pot and a half a day, and to wait each time I want a cup is not practical, I got stuff to do! I do know they make hot chocolate for it and that tastes amazing, but, no, I don't think it would work for you. Those little boxes of coffee are freaking expensive as well. Maybe keep it for the hot chocolate or for when you want to treat yourself to a fancy cup of Jo, otherwise, stick w/ the 12 cupper.0

no the keurig makes terrible coffee, go on the internet and look up "oren's keurig review". you'll see...0
-
I think no, for you.
For me it's fine. My husband isn't home Mon-Thurs for the time being, so I'm solo and I only drink 1 cup of coffee per day.
I personally think traditional brewed coffee is better, but the Keurig makes a decent cup and like another poster said it's awesome to have the array of flavors. That got me away from flavored creamers I used in the past.
I'm very frugal and it honestly pains me to spend $ on the boxes of K cups which are relatively expensive to me. I always find sales and use Bath & Body Works or Kohls coupons when I buy them, but it is still pricey.0 -

I have a Keurig, it's the perfect start for my day. But I would never use that at work where I drink about half a pot a day...it would be too expensive, and I'll be damned if I have to wait 30 seconds for my cup to brew.0 -
I love my Keurig. I have one that takes K-cups. You can do a subscribe and save on Amazon to get decent prices. I pay 53 - 60 cents a K-cup. Also look for deals at bed bath and beyond.
I also use my Keurig for the following:
Make oatmeal (oatmeal in the bowl)
Make tea from tea bags. I just stuff them in the with the string hanging out.
hot chocolate or any other powder, just put it in the cup0 -

Uhm these are fabulous ideas for alternate uses for those machines.. *takes notes*0 -
I prefer my Nespresso.
Keurig is fantastic for 1-cup service - lots of people adore it. It becomes less cost-effective if you would normally use a whole pot of coffee.0 -
mine is in my basement somewhere. it was cool for a few months, but then i got bored of it. i just like a normal drip coffee maker.0
-
I love my Keurig.
Fast coffee in the morning when you have to run to work.
I find it the same as the big pots.
I only take Starbucks Verona. A strong tasty coffee.0 -

Agreed!! This is a wonderful $$$ saver!! We still buy the flavored coffee drinks, like the chai latte, but for regular coffee, we buy what strikes our fancy!! Much cheaper than bewing kcups all day!!0 -
I love my Keurig - drinking some sleepy time tea now0
-
I've had a Keurig, and I really liked it. I did, however, miss the ability to brew a pot, but used my old ni-cro for those occasions. Then there was the cost factor. K cups are expensive per cup (most over fifty cents a cup - still cheaper than a coffee stand or even gas station).
We now have a Hamilton beach thing that does a pot at a time, or a cup at a time using k cups or your own coffee.
For K cups, I like Newman's Own special blend. My regular stuff is Seattle's Best Blend (#3). I also like Green Mountain Dark Magic, and Green Mountain Sumatra blend for the Keurig
Hope this helps.0 -
I love my Keurig It has helped me cut back on coffee. I like you used to drink more than a pot a day but mostly because I didn't want to waste it. Now i brew a cup at a time and it is really good. But I found two drawbacks to my Keurig.
#1 K-Cups are expensive
#2 I am getting too lazy to use the My-K cup refill, I find I would rather spend the money then take the time and fill the little basket.0 -
I love our Keurig!! We've found that Costco has the best prices on K-cup but very little selection. We're not into flavors though, just extra bold coffee. Newman's Own Medium Roast Extra Bold or Dark Magic Extra Bold is what we usually get. Target is the second choice to get coffee with more selection. We drink 2 - 3 cups/day.0

I love my Keurig. Very fast and convenient. Also, I find coffee that has been sitting around in a pot for hours quite gross.0

I love mine. It's fast, and I can have different kinds of coffee instead of a pot of one kind, and it's always fresh. No old coffee sitting there for hours.0 -

Mine turns itself off after a couple hours. Maybe you can set it for specific times, but I just use the time that was set automatically.0 -
It wouldn't be economical for me since I drink so much coffee, but if I was given one as a gift I'd probably use it occasionally for speciality flavored coffee.0

There's, i think, like 3 different systems.... http://www.keurig.ca/
the really basic one and the cadillac with a timer....0
