P90X fail! VENT!

So I started today. I did the chest and back dvd and I feel like a failure because I did all the pushups the "girlie" way. Everyone on the DVD's did the pushups without bending their knees. Ugh. I completed the entire thing but with girlie pushups only! I feel like I failed at it. Hopefully I can do better as the weeks go on! I can already feel it in my arms!

Ok, vent over!

Pshh... I can still only do a few real push ups before switching over to girly ones lol
Everyone in the videos are probably also super in shape, and had to make a requirement of being able to do real push ups to get into the recording as well. You'll get there eventually, just keep on keeping on!

Those people in the video are crazy fit.
    Don't compare yourself to them.
Focus on your own progress. Maybe you can do x reps with x lbs. but next week it might be x +1.
    It's okay.
You will be amazed at your progress if you just keep at it!

If you were in good enough shape to get paid to be in workout DVDs, you wouldn't need the workout DVD. Stop being so defeatist.
  • Oh, good, you have a goal. Work toward it.

Just remember, if you could do what the people do in the video, you wouldn't need the video.

When I started losing weight I couldn't even do all the push ups even from my knees. I'm now a competitive bodybuilder and powerlifter. We all have to start somewhere.

Agree! Push ups are hard to do. Just being able to do them (girlie ones or not) is a great accomplishment. Whether or not you can ever do them without putting knees on the ground is not the point. Everyone is different and some have more upper body strength while others have more lower body strength. Just keep doing your best. If you are, then nothing you do is a fail. :flowerforyou:

those people in the video have been working out for years, they do that for a living so don't compare yourself with them :) as long as you're doing your best, there's no shame in that. I finished Insanity without being perfect at it and I lost most of the weight that I wanted to lose, so keep doing it :) dont be discouraged :D

The first week of P90X is crazy hard, even if it's your 2nd go. I was so sore after the first session of legs and back that I had to take a break and restart it a week later.

The only way to survive the program is to heed Tony's advice: "Do your best and forget the rest." Track your progress and you WILL see improvement!

Its about progress! Its only the first day! Even those people in the videos had to start somewhere- they've already done the p90x program.

Pushups are hard..it took me a long time to even do more then 10 pushups without falling to my knees. It takes work and practice. you will get there. Don't compare yourself to anyone else, focus on what YOU can do. :)

Those people have already been through P90X before (among others). The program was originally for ppl that were fit but wanted to cut.

However...many have started with this and been successful.
Tony himself tells us in every one of those disks that you may not be able to pump out those moves like the ppl there. Go at YOUR OWN pace (not theirs).... press pause if you have to....and MODIFY!

You have got this. Eventually you'll be able to do toe push ups. Don't rush it...just BRING IT!

I hate when people refer to modified pushups as "girl pushups". Do we have to use "girlie" to describe the weak version? I'm a girl, and I don't do them from my knees.

YES! The first week or two is the toughest! But you will get stronger quickly and you will feel (if not see) so many changes in your body.

Don't discount the nutrition part if the program either.

Here's what I've learned (I've done 3 rounds of P90X - first one a couple years ago, the 2nd recently and I'm currently in the 3rd round). When I did the push ups the girly way in the first round, I never did develop the ability to do full push ups. In the 2nd and 3rd rounds, I refused to do them on my knees. If I was only able to do one push up, so be it. I can now do many push ups and I love the feeling of accomplishment! I still can't do every one, but I can do at least half of each type and when I can no longer do them in the regular form, I drop to my knees and finish that way. Don't give up, it will improve!!!

Another way to do beginner pushups is to rest your hands on a bench or stairs. Easier than traditional pushups but more challenging than the so-called girly ones. I used an exercise bench until I could do 3 sets of 20 easily.

    I can't even do a girlie one!

I did wall push up and injured my wrist. The doctor told me to "start with a girlie one". I just smiled ;P

Same experiance as most the peeps here. I started with doing them all on my knees, the next week I would force myself to do one standard, then fall to my knees, next time 2 and so forth. A month or so in I could do 10-12 of most (not the clappy one though, I just fall and laugh) , but mind you this is combined with weight loss.

If you're anything like me, once you get to be able to do a couple you will feel like hero and keep on going.

    Best of luck :)

Make sure you keep track! First week I did almost everything on my knees and by week 3 I'm doing about 50% of it on my feet before switching to knees. Make lots of notes about how many you did on your feet, how many on your knees, and see your progress. :)

You have to start where you are, not where someone else is. Listen to Tony as he says modify modify modify. Do what you can do and try to improve on it each time you do that workout. Over time you will get to where you start doing regular pushups, even if it is only a few. The next time do at least one more than you did before. By the end of the program you are going to be amazed when you look at where you started and where you have gotten to. Pause if you have to, just don't quit.

As another poster noted it was hard to ever go from knee push ups to regular ones. What made the difference for me was chest press with weights. Then after a month or so of that I can do 'normal' push ups. Usually not at the speed the videos want me to but I can do them with correct form now.

No, I'm with you. Why not call it a "modified pushup" which is what it really is instead of calling it a "girly pushup" ?

This exactly... but to OP, so the first go isn't easy. I don't think most people that are trying to get back into shape would say day 1 or week 1 is easy... I know I cried at least once during my 1st round =) You'll get there and just modify! And change that mindset! Ok so you had to modify pushups.... You Finished The Whole Workout. Hello!??!? That's a great step! You should be proud of that and use it to keep going.

The 'girl' push-up is merely a modified push-up according to Shaun T. It's just as good for you as an unmodified!

I do the leg raise push ups.. I guess I am just beasty on P90x days.. Stop doing knee push ups and do normal ones and keep going until you can't anymore.
