What are exercise calories?

I see references to exercise calories on quite a few threads here, but what are they? I'm not sure, but are they referring to the calories that are added to 'remaining calories' when you log in your exercise for the day? My set goal was 1,200 but it jumped up to 1,912 (i ate 1,565) because i did 712 calories worth of exercise. Does that mean I have to eat up to the 1,912?

  • You've got it! Every calorie you burn and record increases the amount of calories you can eat for the day/week. You're given the option to eat those calories back and still be at a deficit because MFP already gives you the calories you should eat to reach your goals if you fiddled with the settings correctly.

Personally, I don't eat my calories back to achieve an even bigger deficit (frowned upon by most of MFP), but I know I could and it's very nice to have that "wiggle room" that you create with exercise. It's a little bit like redemption.

You are right, just make sure your calories burned is accurate.
