Hi everyone I'm brand new to this site as of last night and just wanted to say hi! Now what I am going to tell you next promise me none of you will get offended. My weight issue is.... I can't gain. I am 30lbs underweight. Now I know you are all thinking "I would love to have your problem!!" However, it's just that it is a problem. In a half years time I plan on joining the military services. Unfortunately at my current height and weight I can't get in. My future is riding on this career and it's getting down to crunch time. Now as far as I have seen NO ONE ELSE on this site is trying to gain. So if you are if you have advice PLEASE HELP ME.

I have seen another person on here that has your problem. Have you tried wieght lifting? That will put muscle on and in doing that pounds.
  • Yeah weightlifting was a key part of my weight gain attempts in the past but I just became lean and more toned but still skinny....

Maybe if you put your topic to something that would draw others like your self to open your post that might help you find some.

I thought maybe it was a poop issue or something.....
    LOL

It might be easier to finds others that are trying for the same thing.

    Just saying.

Make sure you're eating a TON of protein - at least one gram for every pound of bodyweight you WANT to be. Even though MFP is mostly used for tracking calories, you can set it to track your protein as well. Use one of the metabolism calculators to work out just how many calories you should be eating every day and aim to be about three hundred ABOVE that.

Then, left weights. High weight, low reps - get a routine a do three sets of six repetitions, with as much weight as you can handle. You should be able to lift the six reps on the first and second sets, but on your third set you should struggle/fail to lift the last one. This will build muscle - and as long as you're eating enough protein, good weight gain.

    I work like this:

    Monday: Chest (bench press, etc.)
    Tuesday: Abs (crunchs, etc)
    Wednesday: Biceps (curls, etc)
    Thursday: Legs (squats, etc)
    Friday: Shoulders (press, etc.)
    Saturday: Rest
    Sunday: Rest

You'll know you're lifting the right weight if your muscles are sore 24/48 hours afterwards. If they're not, add more weight (don't do more reps.)

Make sure you leave 3/5 days between exercising each muscle group, to give it time to heal grow. I try and leave it 7 days. If you don't give the muscles this rest period, you'll never gain.

You might also want to try a creatine supplement, which will help build muscle. I recommend Jack3d or Gaspari Size On.

Hope this helps! I'm no expert, but I gained almost 20lbs of muscle in a couple of months doing this. I no doubt gain muscle more easily than you (and fat too, unfortunately) but you should see results too.

Message me if you have any questions. As I said, I'm no expert and I'm sure some really knowledgeable people will 'weigh' in too (geddit?) MFP is a GREAT community and nobody will judge you for wanting to gain, rather than lose.

    Oh! Just saw this!

This might be because you're not lifting enough. You want to life as MUCH as you can for just 6 reps (or even less.) If you can do 10-12 reps, you're not lifting heavy enough and you'll get stronger, but not any bigger.

did a google search and found this:
    http://www.gain-weight-muscle-fast.com/diet-to-gain-weight.html

    just what Roulette just said:
    1) eat more protein (about 1-2g per pound of current weight)
    2) lower number of reps and increase weight
  • I do not have the same issue as you, but my husband does, and I can attest to it being every bit as difficult to gain GOOD weight (ie not flab by eating junk) as it is to lose weight well (not losing muscle).

Not got much to offer in way of advice apart from this...

    If you smoke...quit

My friend had the exact same problem. She used to eat for England, she was a walking food monster. I saw her eat a 12 pack of wagon wheels and 10 penguin bars straight after eating shepherds pie and she could not gain weight (and Drs say no such thing as a high metabolic rate!) She tried doing it sensibly, stupidly and even went the body builders route, high protein, whey shakes etc (her brother was an accomplished BB) Nothing worked until she quit smoking and it piled on despite cutting right back...so much so that she took up smoking again!

Have you tried increasing your calories with protein shakes. Clean calories. You can find a lot of info on www.bodybuilding.com. They sell BSN protein shakes and they have them for every weight goal. They carry Cell Mass to aid in extra calories. I have a friend that struggles with keeping his weight more than 230 lbs and he recommended BSN shakes.

I agree with Roulette's advice but would also add that in order to gain weight you must consistently exceed your calorie goal. Your body will continue to be in a catabolic state (breaking down) if you aren't meeting your calorie goal. You probably have a fast metabolism, so you may want to add a couple hundred clories to the MFP calculations.
