Hi!
I wanted to know if drinking tea would count as water intake? I mostly drink black tea, green tea, white tea and rose. I use no milk or sugar.

most people will go with anything that has zero calories and zero caffine...so most teas wouldn't count; however, WW used to go with counting half of it as water and now they have gone with counting all calorie free fliuds as water. i only count no calories no caffine personally :)

Yes and no. It is a large part of your water, but at the same time, Tea is also a mild diuretic. The idea of drinking lots of water is to hydrate your body. So in a way, drinking Tea reduces the amount of hydration as you have to go more often.

Well I thought of tea as water as the teabag only serves as flavoring, or so I thought?

My fellow MFP's are correct. For every cup of caffeinated drink (coffee or tea) you need to ADD that amount of water to your 8 glasses a day! Flavored water - non caf tea would count as water.

I would think if you are making tea with hot water, then you consuming water. Consider it like adding crystal lite to flavor water...still water :)
  • i was told by my doctor and many other people as long as it has no caffine you can. i drink decafe coffee alot during the day.

I think the way to solve this is to check the packets to see if they contain caffeine then!
I wanted to know whether you guys out there would count it or not though? Say you drink a black tea or a green team (a tea bag with hot water added only). I would think of that as just water with some flavour?

Water always seems to be a topic of disagreement. Many say that we can get our needed water from everything we eat and drink, but personally I feel a huge difference when I drink 8 servings of water

Its fluid. Any fluid going in counts to keep you hydrated, they dont have to be calorie or even fat free (obviously better if they are). There is only a negligible diuretic effect for those that are used to caffeine as your body gets used to it. If caffeine drinks are a rare thing for you then you shouldn't count them but otherwise go ahead.

If we only count water i'm down at about 1 a week I HATE the stuff. And hate the gnats pee flavoured water too. I guess i'm not one for mild flavours lol. Black decaf coffee is my main source of fluid

Stick with Green and White teas (as your water in take). They are caffeine free and so do not rob your body of necessary hydration.

is just not true. Mild or not, diuretic effects remove water from your body. Similarly, sugar or sodium in your fluid take away from the flushing and hydrating purpose of drinking water.

    That was really interesting!
And to be quite honest, water goes straight through me and makes me pee constantly all day! I can guarantee after a pint of water i'll be rushing to the loo in 20-30 minutes. So is there really much difference?

I would never count tea or coffee as part of the daily water count as they are both duiretics, meaning that fluid in the body is expelled.

Water is for hydration, tea and coffee are dehydrating.

It is only water. If other people can add crystal light and call it water,we can flavor our water with good for you made by God tea!

Unfortunately, it is not the same at all, as stated before, tea is a duiretic. Flavoured water is not a duiretic.

I can drink the clear water, I have been doing quite well with it drinking about 3 pints a day! But I really enjoy tea. Looks like i'll just have to be extra sloshy at the end of the day full of water AND tea :D
  • I personally only count plain, clear water toward my water intake, but it is just to make sure that I have my goal and stick to it the best I can. I love tea and coffee but I add those in under a "other drinks" section that I created. I am drinking water right now that has an emergen-c packet in it, and I have added the packet to my drinks but I have not added the water to my intake. This is just a personal preference in order to push my water intake goal as far as possible.

I think that it is personal preference, if you feel good after drinking tea and coffee with less plain water, your urin is pretty clear, and you are feeling hydrated, keep up what you are doing. If you find that you feel better when you drink more water with your tea, then you may want to switch the way you count it. I think that all of this is just a guide and as long as you are feeling good about what you do, working toward your goals, and living a healthy lifestyle, its your choice.

    Good luck.
  • pesonally girl just drink the tea i can tell you people debate cyrstal light just as well as everything we do i go to an all women gym and everyday they tell me something new (i go in with my ipod on blast now lol) . truth is no one even truly really know how much each person is suppose to drink it just a general you know 6 to 8 all that stuff. if your dehydrate you will feel it that for sure.

Institute of Medicine also issued a similar report that stated the diuretic effects in someone tolerant of caffeine is negligible

At the end of the day we are all individual, if you drink caffeine drinks and your pee is pale then youre hydrated enough.
  • Go with Caffeine free tea or herbal tea and you will be just fine. I drink a lot of herbal tea. I switched to that from coffee and sodas.
  • If a drink has caffeine in it, you have to drink the equivalent of that amount to replace the water. Caffeinated coffee and tea are both diuretics (already stated), so they draw the fluids out of your body and should be replaced (your body is 70% water). It's just like when you sweat, that water has to be replaced. I myself would not count caffeinated tea or coffees as a water source.

Viable sources of water: Fruits, Vegetables, Milk, and other drinks with no caffeine and of course water!

If it has no calories, no caffeine that I would think it counts as your water intake.. I personally drink 10-15 glases of water a day and at least 2-3 cups of herb tea/coffee but I don't count them as my water in take because I put cream and sugar in it.
  • I've seen so many different opinions on this subject. Being that I don't tend to make things harder than the need to be, I just decided that water is water. I log it under my water intake. If I drink anything else, I log it elsewhere. But, I don't flavor my water at all - I don't like it flavored.
