Evening binges

I seem to eat so so well all day, dont pick at foods and keep my diet clean. BUT as soon as 7 or 8 rolls around i go into munchy mode and just want to scoff everything... Especially cheese and bread and junk. Luckily i manage my calories well so Im not over my cals that often, but i really want to get a handle on this crappy habit..:(

Foes anybody else have this issue or have any tips on how they handle it? Advice would be really appreciated...! I just made two big bowls of sugarfree jelly (jello for the americans reading this) so im hopin that might help tomorrow.

Thanks guys :)

And if you want to add feel free...x

Actually I had this up till recently as well. I mostly eat 6 meals a day (breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, diner, snack). At my evening snack before bed I also experienced these cravings.
What I now do is pepare my latest meal, sit down and really take my time to finish the meal.
When I have met my nutrient goals for the day and I am still craving, I drink a glass of water (about 5oz ) brush my teeth and go to bed.
It seems to be helping for me.

I don't know if you are a fan of pickles. I sometimes eat those as a crunchy snack. My craving time comes after work when I first get home. I also sometimes have microwave popcorn. We have 100 calorie bags but sometimes I will have a regular bag which are about 260 calories. I also have gotten into the habit (unintentionally) of saving alot of calories for later in the day. Animal crackers are also fairly lower in calories and suprisingly lower in sugar too.

After 6pm, nothing good happens in the kitchen, for me. So, I try my best to stay out of that area. Make sure all of your tempting foods are put away, out of sight. If you're feeling genuinely hungry and have calories left, eat a 2% fat Greek yogurt, or something else full of protein and a cup of hot tea. Then, stay out of the kitchen....go to your bedroom, watch a movie, run errands outside the house, etc.

Just keep trying strategies to avoid overeating at night and something will work. Then, repeat that behavior every night. For me, it's lights out in the kitchen, hot tea at 8pm, then upstairs for TV/laptop time.

A lot of times I get that munchy feeling in the evening because I am bored or need to do some chores that I don't really feel like doing. Or my home life isn't great, so sometimes I eat for comfort and to quell that anxiety and depression. I've been really trying to log well and it has helped. I have a 30 minute yoga routine that I can do and when I am done, I am generally more relaxed and the munchy feeling has gone away.

You have to pinpoint why you are munchy and eating and work on that.

When I have that problem at night, I have found that a sweet apple and a cup of hot tea works wonders. That way I am getting a sugar fix and it is also surprising filling. If it is chocolate I am craving I eat a tablespoon of nutella with a cup of hot tea.

    I had the same issue.
Luckily my work schedule makes me work until 8 several times a week. So I don't end up eating dinner until 830 often times. I know some people don't like eating that late, but I find it keeps me from snacking. On days when I eat at 5 or 6, I tend to snack by 8.
  • I'm exactly the same way! I combat it 4 different ways.
    1) I do save calories for the end of my day. It helps that I'm a music student, so my mouth and brain are engaged upward of 5 hours a day practicing. But a few 50-100cal snacks spread throughout the day means I usually only eat about 300-600 calories during the day, and then I can eat more in the evening.
    2) I chew gum when I get home. If my mouth is engaged, I feel less hungry.
    3) I drink something that isn't water. It might be diet coke, "crystallite" juice or V8, but something that has at least a little something to them, and makes me think I'm not hungry.
    4) I try to keep raw veggies around the house. Eat a cup of cucumber slices and you've gotten your munchies but hardly affected your calorie intake!

Sometimes I find myself really hungry and reaching for something less than nutritious. I've hung a few pictures both in my room (where I eat), and on the fridge of athletic bodies. So I reach for that food, see the picture and remember that I've got better self control than that! And I go off and chew some gum!
