I am lactose intolerant and am currently using Zymil Lactose Free Low Fat Milk, however it has a high sugar content. I was wondering if anyone knew of an alternative that is low in sugar? or as none at all? and isn't too horrible. haha
Thanks so much

Yep- unsweetened almond milk is fabulous. Soy or coconut milk is a nice treat too sometimes (especially for baking) but almond is my main go-to for any kind of milk product.0

Almond milk....but if you've never had it before it may take some getting used to. It doesn't really taste like milk....but after drinking it for so long the taste of cow's milk is completely unbearable. I could never go back.0

Unsweetened soy or almond milk0

Also a big fan of unsweetened vanilla almond milk. I find that unsweetened coconut milk is better for cooking though since it has fat in it.0

I personally use unsweeted almond milk... Buuut my dad hates the taste of it in his coffee, so he uses International delight sugar free coffee whitener.. cant say its the healthiest option, but I know a lot of people dont like the taste of almond or soy milk0

I recently made the switch to unsweetened plain almond milk in the last couple of weeks. I bought unsweetened vanilla almond milk by accident, but i think that tastes more like regular milk than the plain. An easy way to switch over would be to start with having it in combination with another food, like a bowl of cereal. Hope this helps.0

I'm a fan of unsweetened almond milk. It has twice the calcium as dairy and zero sugar!0

Thanks everyone, I'm going to try the unsweetened almond milk Hopefully we can get it in aus.0

Unsweetened almond milk - fantastic!!!
Thanks for asking the question and all who posted, this is a great alternative to milk. I just had a bowl of cereal with unsweetened almond milk and felt it tasted better than milk that I've been drinking for over 30 years!!

We also use the almond milk, we've tried just about every variety and found that the unsweetened vanilla tastes the best without adding an ungodly amount of sugar.0

I'm a fan of all of the unsweetened almond/coconut/soy/rice milks. I find the vanilla very sweet and don't care for it all that much. I have not seen the unsweetened vanilla though in my stores.0

If you can get almonds, you can get almond milk (and I don't mean in the carton). Just make your own, it'll be worlds better for you, anyway (no additives!).
1 cup almonds (preferably raw)
2-4 cups water, plus water for soaking
blender
cheese cloth, nut bag, or very fine strainer (nut cloth works best, but cheese cloth + fine strainer works well, too)
1 or more containers to hold nuts and milk
Put almonds in a big container, add enough water to cover them. Put in the fridge and let soak for at least 4 hours (if you go longer than overnight, I recommend changing the water).
Rinse almonds, drain, and put in blender
Add 2-4 cups of water (depending on how thick you want the almond milk, I recommend starting with 2 cups and seeing how you like it and add more if necessary)
Blend until the almonds are good and ground up. You'll end up with a thick slurry.
Slowly pour the mixure into the straining equipment (you may have to do batches).
Press or squeeze to get as much of the liquid out as you can.
Voila! Almond milk! Store in the fridge for up to about 4 days. As an added bonus, you also have almond meal as a by-product, which you can use for a bunch of different things.
This also works for any kind of nut milk, so you can do the same thing with cashews, coconuts (add the coconut water to the mix), and any other tree nut you can get your hands on.0 -

Oat milk is nice.
But I'd stick with lactose free milk. It's not that expensive, and there are more useful ways to keep sugar consumption down that worrying about a couple of ounces of milk in a day.0 -
stick with milk and ignore the sugar content0

I use an organic vanilla soy milk. Only 6g of sugar per serving.0

Kroger has Carbmaster milk0

I use SILK unsweeyened vanilla almond milk, 30 cals per cup and sugar free0

I was looking for a low sugar milk alternative myself; however, almond milk is a lot lower in protein than milk, so I guess it's a trade off. Perhaps on the days that I have protein from another source for breakfast.0

The only milks that come anywhere close to cow's milk for protein are other animal milks (sheep, goat) and soy milk. Most others will have negligible amounts, and anything with a comparable amount is most likely fortified (especially if it's almond or coconut milk). It basically comes down to the source - most nuts are good because of their fat content, not protein.
Unless you don't worry about the phytoestrogens in soy milk, or the additives in any of the fortified non-dairy milks, I recommend either sticking with dairy milk and going with whole milk (the fat content helps offset the sugar) or giving up the notion of getting protein from your milk and getting it from other sources.0 -
I actually do worry about the phytoestrogens in soy milk, so I guess, for now, I'll just have to stick with dairy milk. On the days I have off from work or go in later, I can get my protein for alternative sources; it's just very hard (for me) incorporating protein into a office-friendly breakfast. My problem in the past was that I skipped breakfast entirely and by the end of the day I had no energy and wanted to eat everything in sight. I check in with my nutritionist the beginning of the month, so I'll see what she has to add.0

I read an article that stated Carrageenan which is found in the Almond Breeze Blue Diamond Milk has potentially a few health warnings. However the studies were only carried out on animal subjects. These show that this ingredient can cause a formation of ulcerations and cancerous lesions in the colon; as well as other potential effects. I use the Alpro Almond Milk which apparently doesn't contain said ingredient. There isn't much difference in nutrition and tastes just as good.0

If you have a Kroger or chain like that they sell Carbmaster milk which is low sugar, lactose-free and comes in vanilla and plain. It's expensive but is only thing my tum tum can handle. Only 60 calories for whole cup and has 12 g protein.0
