The "right" consistency of mashed potatoes involves being able to stick the stirring spoon into them at a 90 degree angle and having it maintain itself.

    So...chunky

Fairly smooth, as in no hard lumps, but not necessarily lumpy. My husband makes them with full cream milk and a little salt, I do milk and a little butter , no salt.

I think it's really amazing that we have all been able to have such a productive discussion about this important question and it has not degraded into potato shaming. Bravo MFP community!!! :drinker: :flowerforyou:

So if my husband tells me he prefers smooth over the chunky I make, that means he hates me and is trying to change me and I should leave him, correct?

Hand mashed with milk and butter. If they have some chunks, so be it.

But, he shouldn't tell you, you should just check yourself and do it right.

slightly chunky, mixed with garlic and butter.

although i do admire people who have the patience to send their mashed potatoes through a ricer.
