Dallas Marathon Cancelled

Thousands of runners, including myself, who have trained hard for the Dallas Marathon were told today that Sunday's race was cancelled due to winter weather.

Normally it wouldn't be too huge of a disappointment, but I am having surgery on Tuesday and will not be able to run for awhile. I will have to build up my endurance all over again to train for another race.

Can't help but be crushed by disappointment.

Aaaah, poor you :( Will you still be running a half today (treadmill?) regardless? Seems like it might make your training somewhat worthwhile. You can at least try and set a PB, although I understand it's totally not the same. Best of luck.

Dallas is pretty wimpy when it comes to inclement weather - having to drive around the area during the storms a few years back taught me that being on the road with Dallas drivers, while scary enough on a regular day, was downright terrifying if ice and snow were involved. I parked my snow-trained driving *kitten* at the hotel and didn't leave until I absolutely had to. Heh.

GymGypsy - so sorry about your race :( You will have another one, but I know how much it sucks to not have it when you're looking forward to it. I did my first 5K (since running away from XC back in high school, heh) this summer with my kids, and I thought I'd take at least an hour, since I'm old and fat and not a runner, but the sheer energy of the racers (and the zombies) got me finishing in around 45 minutes. So I know what you mean about wanting that race experience on Sunday!

Stay safe and warm out there and don't worry - you'll get another one soon!

I'm so sorry to hear this!

Two years ago I was having hte marathon of my life - running around an 8:40 pace and hoping to negative split. I got to mile 18 and the race was cancelled due to heat. I cried. I am a baby.

You worked so hard for it. Don't worry too much - unless your surgery puts you out for a super long time you WILL be able to come back. You will NOT lose it all even after a few months.

Run your own race as you planned. You can't take away the hard work and training you put in. So sorry to hear this!

I am so sorry they cancelled it =(. Hope surgery goes well and you're able to recondition without too much loss after you've healed.
  • So sorry that you trained hard for something that won't happen. Also sorry you won't get the chance to measure your progress before you go in for surgery. Don't let it get you down, though, and use this desire as motivation to train hard again when you have recovered.

As a side note, I live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and have been stuck in the house since last Thursday evening because of the weather. The weather here messed up the Super Bowl last year and your race this year. Ice is rare here but when it comes, watch out!

That really does suck. I'm sorry. Seems a bit much to cancel just because of bad weather.

So true, driving in Dallas is a scary experience.

With the way Dallas is today, walking is not a good idea, let alone running. There was no choice but to cancel the marathon.

Dallas has to hold a marathon around this time of year. It would be unsafe to run in the type of heat Dallas has from May-September.

It is amazing to think that a place that reaches 100 degrees in summer with regularity can get an ice storm.
