Glycogen and the associated water it swims in... It happened to me last spring after a week at an all-inclusive.

This summer I gained like 11 lbs after one week of camping and totally stuffing my face with whatever I could get my hands on. All but 1 lb was gone after a week of eating at my usual deficit. Magic. Or fat fairies. Or Santa. Take your pick.

I'm 5'10" on a good day. That's by no means short, but not that tall either.

that's like a giant to me.

    I'm 4'10 - to me you're a giant also LOL

And I think I'm going well when I eat over 2000

In for all the yummy goodness that is Christmas :drinker: and back to the routine after

If you'd been dieting for a long period, the week of eating above maintenance elevated your leptin levels (which are suppressed when dieting), plus some of that was water weight from sodium and alcohol (if you were partaking). Then, when you returned, your body shed the water weight, plus was more relaxed about letting fat go. Most health professionals recommend taking diet breaks every now and again, whether it's one meal a week, or a whole week off.

This! I gained just a little bit over Thanksgiving week, seeing how I was attending a few Thanksgiving celebrations where I didn't count, having two nights where I drank and ate copious amounts of fried chips and guac, and going to a fancy anniversary party. But since then, I got back on track and dropped extra weight than my average over the past week and a half. In the end, it's equalized the week of gaining a bit out completely! Score.

Short term over eating results in incomplete energy absorbtion.

English isn't my first language and I have a bit of a hard time decoding the scientific vocabulary in there.. can you put their findings into simple terms for me?

They believe only a small portion of excess calories are actually absorbed into the body, during short term over eating (a couple days). But they also believe it makes you unhappy at the same time.

I took 5 days off around Thanksgiving. I ate whatever I wanted, which resulted in about 4,000-5,000 calories a day. (my TDEE is around 2,400 a day) I gained 5 pounds in those 5 days, 1 was still there by the end of last week.

I was kind of miserable over those 5 days though. The bloat and stomach discomfort ticked me off. I have become a food lightweight :grumble:

I'm still +9 lbs post-Thanksgiving, and I've been eating at a deficit ever since.

    Not trying hard enough

    Good thread OP!

I am very lax with food and logging on holidays normally but in general getting out and about and sight seeing etc. increases my TDEE over what it normally is as I do minimal cardio these days compared to before. Typically, lose weight on holidays for me.

Our bodies aren't number crunchers- there's more than just calories in/out (though that does play a factor) when it comes to weight balance. It also may have been a good time for a 'metabolic reset', though you did go slightly overboard (heheh). Your body was probably thankful for the refeed, and is now doing better than ever losing the weight because it knows there's no need to worry about starving. There are likely lots of factors involved, these are just a few I can think of.

I'm going away for 12 days, so basically I need to keep my holiday over eating to just 4 or 5 days and stay strict the rest of the time if I don't want to gain weight?

What makes you think we dont have water retention issues (granted, not as large of an issue as women but still). My weight will fluctuate between 187-192
  • and here I am 2 months after my vacation still trying to lose the weight I gained in 10 days:ohwell:

I got back from our cruise in November and had gained about 6 lbs. My caloric intake was probably similar to home except I was doing more exercise as we were walking tons and I carried a kid practically the entire vacation. It was gone in about 4 days. Majority was water weight. I had some puffy legs and ankles when I got home. Back to normal in just a few days.
