Knees hurt while doing squats..

Lately my knees get sharp pains when I do squats. Are there any ways to make that stop? It happens after only a few. Thanks.

Can only say to check your form first and foremost. Make sure you are sticking your bum out rather than forward, watch that your knees aren't going over your toes - are you squatting fully? Big cause of knee injury is not doing full squats. Maybe google some techniques and squat in front of a mirror to check your form.
No expert, that's my only advice, hope it's nothing serious. If in doubt and your knees still hurt I'd get checked with a physio- your knees are way too important to mess around with !0 -

Squatting is the best exercise to actually combat knee issues ASLONG as it's done correctly. So unless your form is bad, the pain is probably caused by a different issue like tight quads, calfs. Make sure you stretch well.0 -

Squatting is the best exercise to actually combat knee issues ASLONG as it's done correctly. So unless your form is bad, the pain is probably caused by a different issue like tight quads, calfs. Make sure you stretch well.
Yeeeeeeaaaah but since we don't know if it's bad form, or weak hips, of tight glutes, or serious structural issues with her knees we really can't advise her based on the information given, can we? If she said "I don't like" or "it's uncomfortable" that's one thing, but telling someone who has "sharp pain" to buck up, stretch her calf, and push thru it because "it's a good exercise" is borderline criminal.
But you go right ahead with your internet diagnosing there, doc.0 -
Pain during exercise is not good. See a doc of physical therapist to see what is going on.0

I would try a wider stance and maybe also use a chair or something to hold onto a little for support. I have used the back of the couch or a closed door knob when working out at home. It assists you just enough to give you better form until you get stronger.0

I agree with many previous posters that you need to check your form. ANY time something feels off about my squats, the first thing I do is ask one of the trainers at the gym to watch me while I squat and check my form. They usually do anyway when they spot me.0

I don't believe I told her to 'push thru it' or 'buck up' - I told her to check her form because it's the number one reason why you get pains squatting and if that was good then she should get checked out by a physio. No diagnosis given I think you'll find.
Noticed some of your posts before which are equally helpful and sarcastic...maybe you should concentrate on working on your attitude rather than attacking people who are only trying to give friendly advice to people who ask for help.0 -

Check your form, if you're doing it right, check with a doctor. I have the same type of problem in one knee (I also have the same pain with lunges and even climbing stairs that I have with doing squats) I checked my form, had my trainer watch to make sure my form is correct and then went to a doctor. For me according to the doc, my problems is genetic (ie the structure of the knees I was born with, my knees don't bend correctly), compensation issues from when I had torn a tendon in my ankle (this is the knee that it is the worst in, the other knee is just a slight twinge when I bend it too far), and my weight. I can lessen the knee pain by losing weight, the squats, lunges, and climbing stairs will help strengthen my knee and as I lose weight and strengthen my knee the pain should lessen (I may never be fully free of it because of the genetics side of it and damage done from when I injured my ankle, but the frequency that I have that pain will be less, it should be an occasional twinge like the other knee)0

Post a video. I mean it, it's too technical a lift to tell from here.
I actually messed up my knees squatting, but I think I was bouncing out of the hole, causing undue strain on my knees. Also might have started off too heavy. Anyways, lots of points to consider, post a video from a diagonal so we can see your back, and your knees/feet.0 -
My trainer gave me two tips about the form maintenance:
1. Always do proper functional stretching of legs (e.g., swinging them forward, backwards, sideways) for few minutes prior to attempting Squats,
2. One must push-up from the heel when you are standing-up after the squatting position. To ensure that I am actually using my heels, he asked me to place two metal plates under the front of both my feet. That way my toes are slightly raised and heels are digging well into the floor.
You also need to pay attention to the sequence of exercises you do. If you have done some STEP or heavy weight lifting using a circuit machine then joints get tired. You may consider doing Squats first and rest of the exercises later. This tip certainly helped me.

Form before Function. Simple. Get the technique right and the rest will follow.
I do double kettlebell squats, barbell squats, whatever there is in the gym and my legs hurt now after doing them this morning. Not all pain is bad but at the same time, treat it with respect and listen to your body if it continues or does not ease off.0 -
Actually, this is something the Internets can help with. Post a video of your squat. If you're doing something egregiously wrong you will likely get some good advice here that you can try. If it still hurts, then it's time for a Dr or PT (although half of them are idiots too).0

As a general rule I hate doctors... just like I hate vets. They convince you that you need to run in to the office everytime you have a little twinge just to tell you "hey... you're overweight... you have bad knees... when you're not fat anymore your knees won't hurt".
As you can tell by this statement... I too have knee pain when I squat, lunge, run, etc. I have bad knees... which tends to go away for the most part when I'm at a lighter weight (go figure). Stretch really well before you do anything... wider stance usually helps... and just sucking it up and powering through it... ice knees afterwards.
ETA: I don't have a mirror in my workout room... I set my iphone up to take a video of my workout from time to time so I can see what I might be doing wrong and change it next time. Might help.
If it gets worse... by all means go to the doctor.0 -

Get a qualified person to assess your form. That's the first step. If it's still hurting, then go see an orthopedist.
