The frustrations of not knowing.

I want to exercise and I know that running and walking are pretty good for you. I know that exercise in general is good for you. But I happen to like number goals instead of time goals.
Add that to the fact that I can't run or go for a walk unless I want to freeze to death.
Blah, I'm being complicated,
However, even though I'm new to exercising and what not, doesn't mean I'm completely terrible at it. I can keep up for the most part.
Sorry this was a rant more then a question, but I need advice on getting started with excercise.

I second your post. For the most part my fitness involves a video or jogging, fast walk. Even though I have a bowflex 2 treadmills a bench, and weights. I have not been able to figure out a plan and stick with it. I would like some help putting together a plan including what and how many reps on what days and so on. Right now the time is what kills my motivation its dark here at 5:30pm and I wont go at it alone. Come on Spring!0

Now all you need to do is act on this knowledge. It wouldn't hurt to have red or blue lazers either.0 -
I got a fitbit in October and I set it to 11,000 steps. Then when I get home from work I walk on the treadmill to get the rest of the steps I need. I love the goal being my fitbit vibrating instead of a mile or minute goal. This might be an option for you?0

Hello Ladies,
For a starting weight routine take a look at Starting strength 5x5..in fact I think there is a woman's group here for this. Was a great place for me to start. Also C25k...its not about time, its about getting to that 3.1 mile mark. Both of these provide a good structure to at least provide you that motivation.0 -

News flash. You don't have to exercise to lose weight.
But as for getting started, you just have to get up and do it. Either you want to or you don't.0 -

Try 20 minutes at an incline of 10 or above...then keep incrementing until you get to 45 min 15 incline 3x a week. You will lose weight and you can read/watch tv the same time0 -

Do you live in Antarctica?
If you dress properly running / walking / snowshoeing / x-country skiing etc can be incredibly enjoyable activities.
It gets pretty cold where I live (it was about -37°C yesterday morning with the windchill) and I run outside all year 'round (except when there's freezing rain, I prefer to remain vertical....)0 -
I'm a wimp when it comes to cold temps too. Remember, there's way more to exercise than just walk or run - unless you meant those are your favorite things to do. How about a workout video? There are tons you can view/use online, just check out Youtube. Or check your local library for their selection. Or if you're willing to invest $10, WalMart and Target both have a pretty good selection. Since you like walking, check out Leslie Sansome's videos. You can even get some with resistance bands.
Or just look up workouts you can do at home. There are all kinds of bodyweight exercises you can do if you don't have equipment - sit-ups, push-ups, squats, lunges, planks, jumping jacks, burpees, tricep dips... If you're not sure what any of these are, just google for pics or videos. If you have gallon jugs around, re-use those for hand weights. Filled with water, they weigh about 8 pounds each but of course you could just fill them 1/4 or 1/2 way at first and work your way up.
Best of luck!0 -
What are you frustrated with not knowing? The calorie burn you get from exercise? A Fitbit is a fun for that. I like numbers goals, too.
If the weather has you stuck indoors, break out the Wii or Kinect or go walk laps around the mall or join a cheapie gym for the winter. Or pick up a kettlebell or a DVD. Tons of options.0 -
Bundle up and go, you'll be fine.0

I agree with the Fitbit it gets me up and moving knowing how much or how little I have good is what I needed to get in the habit. I love trying to get more steps than others and also myself. I was upto over 16k steps a day before I got sick last month now I'm trying to work my way up there again0

I'm trying to acclimate to cold temperatures so I don't wuss out/ know what to expect next winter, which I'll be spending in Minnesota.
Also, if you're not worried about looking silly, I just found a 15 minute long song and just ran in place and did jumping jacks until the song was over, then found a 5 minute song and did some sit-ups.
And, as someone else said, you could always resign to restricted eating until you figure out what you want to do about exercise.0 -
The body needs to be exerised. It doesn't matter if you're graceful at Zumba or run slowly.0
