What do you do to avoid mindless snacking?

I always have good intentions when getting snacks.... AT FIRST. then I feel like I want a little bit more and a little bit more. I dont buy anything tons of junk, only a couple of things I would eat over time. I walk to get away from those few things.

Now I want one. But it looks a little flimsy. I bet throwing it against the wall a few times would crack it right open!0 -

I totally understand the mindless eating of crunchy/salty/sweet things. What I do is portion out 1 serving into a sandwich bag or something, and put the rest back in the cabinet. Bring your little baggie with you to do your work and that's your snack, no more! Also, think about how crappy it feels to have too much junky stuff sitting in your stomach when you're trying to sleep (and chances are that it will prevent you from getting good sleep, esp if it's sugary) and maybe that will help you?

When I converted to a paleo diet I lost all desire to snack. The added protein and fat keeps you full.0

Snack on celery, green beans, broccoli, bell pepper, etc with a bit of mrs dash or pepper on top. Super low calorie, still has that satisfying crunch~
Make a dip out of plain nonfat greek yogurt and dried onion if you want more? Or hummus.0 -

I have to agree with you. Unfortunately I share my kitchen with my kids, and those are the things they have for school snacks. And, I consider dark chocolate one of the main essential food groups...in moderation.0 -

I tried the portioning out trick once, but ended up throwing the stuff out because it got stale. These monthly cravings are "cyclical" if you know what I mean. And, I feel guilty going through all those ziplock bags. I do agree with the portioning it though. Instead of eating out of a bag, I should just grab a handful and put it on a plate.0 -
If I want something salty, I suck on sunflower seeds. I give the seed to my dog. Other than that, I like water with flavor drops to dip on.0

I try to have healthy snacks around for mindless snacking. I have a drawer full of snacks at work. I also drink hot tea and peppermint tic tacs help also.0

I have the same issue each month, I either
drink hot tea - and find that the heat of the tea makes me drink it slowly and the liquid fills any imagined gap ( because I think it is usually imaginary!)
If I cave .. then I make sure I log it all so that I can sit and contemplate exactly what I did .. and not repeat my mistake and hopefully do better next time. If there are no results on the scales I want to be able to see why and take responsibility for it.0 -
Hot naturally decaf tea. (Pretty sure things that have been "decaffeinated" are really bad for you.) Not sure why but that really helps me with late night cravings. Sometimes I will have 2, and it takes care of the late night snack monster within.0

Raisins (one at a time) or baby carrots are my mindless snacking. Special K cracker chips are pretty low calorie salty snacks. The sour cream and onion and the barbecue are my two favorites. There is a cheese flavor that is pretty good, too. Salted and plain popcorn are also good. I understand about snacking when working. I get semi-hyper when I am concentrating on work. The tiny bits of food time is the time I use to consider something.
I agree on the protein. When I finally upped mine, the mindless eating and carb cravings went away after about a week.0 -

Carrot chips and some light ranch is hardly anything.
I just keep my hands busy. I hate having to reach for something while typing or drawing, then having my fingers all salty and sugary.0 -

Put a kitty on my lap. Kitty won't let me get up when they curl up on me & I'm too much of a wuss to boot 'em off to get treats...:laugh:0 -

I have that problem too. She has a deep need....think its cuz my lap is warmer when the laptop is setting on it. Instant kitty-warmer. :laugh:0
