Measureable Weightloss Goals

The hospital in which I work has changed things with our insurance. In order to pay a reasonable rate, we as employees had to have labs drawn, blood pressure taken and BMI calculated. If you chose not to participate, your insurance rates would double. Based upon these results, I have to see a health coach. My cholesterol is on the high side, not too bad, but enough to put me in the health coach category and my BMI was not where it should be.

So, in order to help me with this and to keep the hospital out of my business, I signed up for a health & fitness and nutrition course. I am back in nursing school furthering my degree. I have been in critical care for 11 years now. I am required to log 900 minutes by April. I won't have any trouble doing that at all.

I need help coming up with measureable goals, and I would appreciate any thoughts you have in this. For the Weight loss class, I said lose 15 lbs by the end of the semester and a better BMI, which is measureable. For the nutrition class I said blood sugars <150, but for the life of me, I can't think of a thing else that is measureable that I can document and prove. My true goal for blood sugar is <120 but in the last few months, I lost my mom, work full time, go to school full time and I am raising 2 grandbabies, the mind is feeling a little foggy here, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi

Could you set some 'measurement' goals eg waist size... for example a waist size of xx or a decease of xxcm by xx

Or an overall decrease in measurements by %

    Good luck

  • Diane,

That is a good idea. I can take a before picture and an after, so she can see the results as well. Oddly the dean of the nursing program is teaching this class, so I want to do really well. She will be handing me a diploma in a little over a year.

There are a few other measurments people use here as well.

    Body Fat%
Strength gains (if you are lifting which is a good idea)
    Cholesterol numbers
And of course measurments (chest, band, natural waist, waist, hips, tighs, neck etc.)

Always take pics...you will be surprised at the changes you can see in a photo vs the mirror.

I second the measurements, blood work, and body fat %
They are the easiest to prove and the best factors in determining your health, obviously. Good luck with your goals, hope you can hit them all and get decent insurance! It might be a PITA now, but that's a pretty good motivator to get back on track health-wise!

5lbs is a measurable goal. Good luck!
  • It is actually more intrusive and rude, then a pain. It was the whole way it was done, it certainly could have been handled in a more professional manner.

You have to want to lose weight, being forced to participate in a program is not going to do it if the mindset isn't there. If they had approached it by saying, if we don't work on some of these controllable factors of chronic illnesses, we are going to have to increase our premiums next year, then put a plan in place, that would have been fine.

They tell us we have to get healthy, then they serve fried grilled food at night, I work nightshift. We got good scores on our yearly survey, what do they do, serve free donuts and coffee as a reward. I'm going along with the game, I will lose weight, my numbers will come down, but like I said, I'm doing it for me. Them forcing me to let them look at my labs, weigh me and take my blood pressure have nothing to do with it.

I have heard many companies are doing this and not just in healthcare.
