Dr. Oz Has Featured No Less Than 16 Weight Loss Miracles. Why Is There Still an Obesity Epidemic?

Miracles, revolutionary breakthroughs, silver bullets: In the real world of weight loss, they manifest rarely, if ever. But what if I said that you could regularly discover simple ways to change your life, all from the cushioned confines of your sofa?

Mid-afternoon, your living room: a magical time and place. With a mere flip of the television channel, you can enter a fantastical realm where magic is a common occurrence. Welcome to the Dr. Oz Show.

"You may think magic is make believe, but this little bean has scientists saying they've found the magic weight loss cure for every body type. It's green coffee extract."

"I've got the number one miracle in a bottle to burn your fat. It's raspberry ketone."

“Garcinia cambogia: It may be the simple solution you’ve been looking for to bust your body fat for good.”

In the five years that Dr. Mehmet Oz has been on the air, he's shared no less than sixteen weight loss "panaceas," "game-changers," and "miracles." (Source: I read the synopsis for every single episode, all 775 of them. And that miracle count is likely low, owing to the fact that my reading transformed to skimming around episode 300. My eyes were melting.) From metabolism boosters, to diet plans, to pills, Oz's recommendations guarantee to help you shed the pounds fast.

So why is there still an obesity epidemic?

According to the most recent Gallup-Healthways poll, America's obesity rate ticked up a full percentage point between 2012 and 2013. Moreover, new CDC data from October shows that that prevalence of adult obesity did not change between 2009-2010 and 2011-2012. There was a slight drop in the overall rate to 34.9%, but it was statistically insignificant.

With an arsenal of weight loss miracles at Americans' disposal courtesy of Dr. Oz, there must be a reason that we're still languishing in lard. Perhaps most Americans just haven't heard about them? Maybe those that have can't afford them? Perhaps we're using them incorrectly?

Or perhaps, Oz's purported miracles simply don't work. Let's consider the three aforementioned weight loss solutions. Green coffee extract has had spotty performance in clinical trials; hardly a breakthrough. Garcinia cambogia has faired even worse. A systematic review noted small, short term slimming effects, but the compound's efficacy could not be substantiated in the long term. As for raspberry ketone, well, it hasn't even been specifically tested in humans yet.

Of course, obesity in America does not rise and fall with the whims of Dr. Oz. Though he holds the attention of approximately four million daily viewers, he's not solely responsible for curtailing America's collective girth. To say so would be ridiculous.

But equally ridiculous is the notion of a weight-loss "miracle." From his trusted position, Dr. Oz simply masquerades marketing as medicine, trumpeting outlandish claims on the backs of poorly conducted science and insignificant data. In the end, it's all for ratings.

Who knows? Scientists may one day discover a single pill that will quickly and healthily slim us down. But when it's created, you certainly won't hear about it first from Dr. Oz.

Many people call Dr. Oz a quack and I have to strongly disagree. Dr. Oz is a scam and should be ashamed of himself. Instead of telling people about the next miracle weight loss pill (that doesn't actually work) he should be teaching people about nutrition and encouraging them to get active. He could use his position of power for good, not greed.

Agreed, but unfortunately, there is little money in that.

Maybe he is just totally uneducated in matters of nutrition and fitness. My primary care physician is very ignorant in this subject. He asks me hw i do what i do to get healthy instead of the other way around.

I've always found it interesting that obesity rates have trended upward over time, alongside the popularity of Dr. Oz and other fitness "gurus". If their magic pills work so damned well, then shouldn't the obesity rate decrease the longer these things are touted? For me, that's a pretty solid measure of just how effective they are.

I can't hear what you are saying over how hot Robert Downey Jr. is. :flowerforyou:

    +1

But what you're saying logically makes sense. A calorie deficit also logically makes sense, but a lot of people try to thwart that all the time. :grumble: People are always looking for a magic cure.

Dr. Oz: A Hazard To America's Health
    Written by Jamy Ian Swiss
Is Dr. Oz a fraud or a fool? I can’t know for sure, and I don’t care.

I do know this: He sure doesn’t seem like much of a scientist to me.

And I am also pretty damned sure that he is a hazard to America’s health. And probably the greatest hazard on network television today. And that’s saying something.

When was the last time that a revolutionary, historic, scientific breakthrough was first demonstrated and announced on an afternoon television talk show?

    The correct answer: NEVER.

The author of the article I posted had the same sentiments. If there was an actual scientific breakthrough for fat loss Dr. Oz would not be the first one to announce it.

Bahahaha, so true. I'll listen to his "breakthrough" when he gets the Nobel Prize.

even though Dr. Oz is a scam, he might of triggered something in some people

Without him I would of never started this journey, yes I started on the african mango craze , but after I realized it was a flop I decided to do my own research on this "fitness" thing and discovered this app, eating at a deficit and the glory that is lifting heavy.

so I somewhat have to say thank you Dr. Oz for showing me what not to do and forcing me to find out what to do to get the body I deserve

He has the same problem every health and diet based media does, they cant keep talking about the same thing every episode or every magazine. He would have been much better off sticking to showing up as a guest on a show that touched on health once a month vs him having to find content for a show 5 days a week. He really needs to stop with the quick fix weight loss crap though. He knows better but ignores it. I like that he has been open to alternative views on health otherwise all he'd be doing is pushing his vegan diet on everyone else. Claiming certain things as potential miracles is bull**** though and is only there to hook viewers.

I think he started out wanting to do a legitimately medical-driven talk show... but the network drove home pushing the sponsors and shoved a wad of cash at him, and he was like "WTH!"

Yes! I remember watchin Dr. Oz on Oprah some years ago. There were two things he said that he strongly believed in that are WAY off what his show is about now. He ALWAYS talked about food being the gateway to health. On one show, Oprah was talking about skin and looking younger. Dr. Oz said that aside from genetics, the only way to improve skin is to eat better, drink more water, (not smoke), and live a healthy life. He said it was all about what you put in your body and that there will never be a topical thing-no lotion or anything that will do the trick. Imagine my surprise when years later I decide to give his show a go and see this lineup of topical beauty product miracle potions!! What?? He also said--back in the day--that there was never a need to take many vitamins. He said you can get all your nutrition from proper eating--that a multivitamin might not hurt, but nothing more than that. NOW, he's always pushing the latest supplement, from Omega-3's to whatever else. I think you can sometimes see it in his face. Either he pushes this crap or he's out of a job. His job isn't to show the world how to solve their problems with diet and nutrition as he probably once naively believed--it's to push product, product, product. If you watch his show with a discerning eye, you can detect some truths.

He has the choice to say no. It's his name on the show. If it really meant that much to him to get the truth out instead of selling the latest fad he would stick to his original stance. There's something wrong with your character when opportunity (in his case money) controlls your loyalty.
