Pain in wrist while doing push ups

Hey guys,

I have been doing push ups and noticed that my right wrist is feeling a little bit of pain on the left side. Any ideas why this is?

I have the same thing in my left wrist. I think it's just because it's not used to the weight or being used that hard. I started wearing one of those ionic bracelets (mine is performXband) and when I wear it on that wrist it gets better but when I take it off, it comes back. I don't know. Could be real. Could be all in my head,.

I don't know why it is hurting but you could try doing push-ups with your hands in fists as it keeps your wrist straighter. Or those push-up gadgets are also handy - you know like bars you hold. When I box I do the push-ups in the gloves and I find I get less pain in my wrists doing that... hope that helps!

Nope. And none of us will be able to diagnose it over the internet. If it's minor, take a couple of days off. If you're concerned, go see a doctor and get an X-ray.

Well it's nothing major, nothing that requires a doctor. I was just wondering if any one else is in the same boat, or perhaps it could have to do with my form while doing push ups.

    One idea is flexibility.

    Yes it's in your head.

That would help avoid flexibility issues and dumbbells can also work as bars you hold.

Flexibility. Use dumbbells as pushup stands. Or get pushup stands

Happens to me once in a while as well. Usually goes away in a day or two. Like most have said, usually a strength or flexibility issue. I usually use push up bars. That way the wrist stays more perpendicular to the shoulders (thus stronger) and you get more range of motion. They are fairly cheap. You can also use dumbbells. As far a flexibility here is a link to the P90X Stretch video (https://player.vimeo.com/video/44905584 it has a couple of really good forearm and wrist stretches. The forearm wrist stuff is about 7 or so minutes in.

If the wrist that hurts is your 'weaker' arm, then it's most likely due to muscle imbalance.

If it ONLY hurts when you put weight/pressure on it, then it's even more likely due to the stress on the muscle.

99.9% of us have similar wrist flexibility angles(unless you had an injury). It wouldn't be a mobility issue.

It's most likely overstraining unused muscles. Take a few days off and see how it feels.

I have arthritis (lupus) in my wrists and push-ups (and some yoga poses) can make them hurt. I have found that if I wait until the end of my workout when my body is completely warmed up, it's much easier on my joints. Even on weight days, I still do 15-20 minutes of cardio to warm up. I've also used dumbbells to keep them straighter. It does help.
