1,200 calories a day is unnecessary and for many counter productive. You are already beating yourself up over no chocolate before it has even started....
  • What do you mean by 1200 calories is unnecessary? More or less? thanks

Do you mean maximum of 1200 a day? And if you're on 1200 you need to be eating back your exercise calories. And that must be a big meal to be 1200 calories, my meals are around 300 cals.

More for sure. Loads of people set themselves up with this 1,200 target as it appears to be the extreme minimum that MFP will recommend.

Why go to the extreme minimum? Wouldnt people rather lose weight slowly but happier rather than lose weight quickly and risk some kind of disorder or obsession while not allowing themselves any source of comfort food - something necessary when losing weight?

    You've lost a stone, 14 pounds, in 12 days?

That seems very fast, but clearly what you're doing is working.

if you're referring to the "In 5 weeks time you would weigh...." notification - you can safely ignore it.

Well done on what you have lost already but if you want to stick with it and keep off what you have lost I would advise upping your calories. for most people 1200 is unsustainable longterm and as soon as you go back eating more the weight fires back on. I know you want to get to your ideal weight asap, we all do lol, but you are just setting yourself up to fail if you deny yourself any kind of treat. Eat a balanced diet and get some exercise in and the weight will come off. Good luck :flowerforyou:

To everyone saying 1200 isn't enough - you don't know enough about OP to say that. For some of us 1200 is the right amount. I'm female, 5'4, and my TDEE is about 1500, so 80% of that is 1200. That's at sedentary, so as I said earlier, if she eats her exercise cals then 1200 might be the right amount.

And judging by that funky picture, you are slim, so assuming therefore that the OP is overweight which is the reason for setting a low allowance, their actual calorie allowance for still reasobnable weight loss is likely to be higher.

And besides, I still stand by my comment about the psychological effects. Diets are a waste of time in my opinion. Eat healthy yes, but dont restrict yourself to the point that it is just not enjoyable. I lost weight frequently eating stuff that doesnt go on any typical weight loss diet, I just ate less of it than I did prior.
  • Thankyou for all the reply's I was told 1200 but was wondering if that can be rice/chicken noodles as long as its in my limit? Yes 14lb in 12 days but this was eating only 1 meal a day :( Im getting my self out of this routeen now since I found this and can track my calories x
  • Iv always seen diets as salad's nothing i really want... but if im sticking to 1200 I can eat what I like in that limit and exercise? x

hey same here im on a 1200 calorie intake a day regime too. The less you eat the more your body will try to hold on to your current fat. That's what I found from personal experience. I did that at the start thinking I'll stay within the 1200 limit. but it made me feel worse cos my body felt tired n I'm assuming my body was trying to hold on to any stored energy possible.

eat 1200 calories a day if ur slightly under or over its better then feeling hungry cos your body is not straining itself its got sufficient amounts of energy.

Have breakfast (I do cereal at about 8-8.30 am )
have a nice lunch ( I have it at about 3.30-4pm)
and a small meal in the evening ( preferably before 6 or 7pm)

This is what I do. im losing weight slowly but its meant to be the best way to lose weight. this way I've found im losing 1-2lbs a week sometimes half a lb n yup sometimes im naughty n I lose nothing but I'd rather lose nothing then gain something.

because ive had few health problems I haven't managed to stick to my usual routine. And when this happens if nothing else I try to maintain my current weight n start again when im feeling better.

    Hope this helps :)

Yeah, OP probably could eat more, especially if she's running around looking after kids. Her height would play a big part I think, though. I mostly wanted to say that 1200 is right for some people; if she's only 5ft tall 1200 might not be far off.

I ate 1200 for ages and think it's perfectly fine. I'm on 1300 a day at the moment and regularly eat pub food and take aways and stay within my calorie goals, it's not like you can never eat food you like. Lunch & dinner only come to 600 cals a day, so I have 700 with which to eat desert or snacks (I tend to sleep through breakfast).

To OP: you can easily lose weight eating whatever you want, you don't have to restrict yourself to salads. You could eat 1200 calories of chocolate a day if you wanted. It wouldn't be very healthy, of course... but you'd lose weight. It can be hard to fit all the nutrients and things you need in 1200 cals if you're focused on being healthy as well as losing weight, but given how much exercise you're doing you won't be eating just 1200 cals most days anyway.
