Lack of iron making me dizzy?

Recently i have been nearly blacking out when i stand up. My vision goes cloudy and i have to hold on to something near me. A friend of mine told me that it could be due to lack of water, food or iron. I eat he right amount, i drink a fair bit of water...but i looked at the amount of iron i am consuming today and realized that i barely have any. I think you get iron in red meat right? Anyone else have this problem and what other healthy foods contain iron?

Haem iron from animals is MUCH more highly absorbed (30ish percent) than plant (2-15%) and supplements (usually iron (II) sulfate).

But it doesn't have to be your source of iron. Also concurrent ingestion of vitamin C helps with plant/supplement absorption, and vitamin A helps you use iron stored in your body.

If it's when you are standing up, it's most likely your blood pressure dropping too quickly. It's called orthostatic or postural hypotension. I suggest buying a blood pressure monitor from a local pharmacy (I bought mine from CVS). Take it when you get these symptoms. When you get ready to stand up, stand SLOWLY. Normal blood pressure is 120/80. Low blood pressure is considered 90/50.

Once again, I highly doubt it's iron related, but cream of wheat is a great source of iron.

I was going to say, when was the last time you had your blood pressure checked? I have a hard time with burpees and anything I do that involves being on the floor and getting up quickly. My last bp reading was 98/68.

I agree, does not sound like Iron deficiency...blood pressure is tanking when you stop activity, likely quickly. Slow down gradually and preform a proper cool down. It would not hurt to have an exercise tolerance test preformed to eliminate the chances of a abnormality in your hearts electrical system which can also result in blackouts.

Could be low blood pressure. I have this happen from time to time.

Get it checked out by your doctor. I don't know your stats, so can't recommend you take iron supplements. You might try adding more salt to your diet to see if it helps.

Same happens to me!!!! I try to eat an abundance of red meat to bring my levels up, and my boyfriend bought me a bottle of iron pills to take every other day, and that has been staving it off.
When I was larger I used to not be able to give blood because i would fail the test they do when they prick your finger! I was like, I thought only tiny girls who barely eat anything fail this thing  Have only given blood once in my life, want to go back now and see if I can do it more often since I'm healthier...

If I forget my iron pills multiple days in a row and it happens to be a low iron day, I get super dizzy after getting off the treadmill or lifting weights. When my vision gets all cloudy I kind of stumble back to the locker room to sit, I bet people look at me weird :p But that means I cannot stress HOW IMPORTANT IRON IS!!!!

PS, my boyfriend and I were on a spinach kick last week and I noticed a fair amount of iron in that. So if you want to limit your red meat consumption, might want to look into other foods like that!

    Cheers ^^

I will definitely get my blood pressure checked. The last time i had it checked was about 2 years ago when i joined a gym. It must have been fine then. Could the weight loss trigger low blood pressure? How do i change it if i do have low blood pressure?

    Thanks for your answers :)

not the weight loss, but exercise can reduce blood pressure. Drink fluids to raise. Go into a Walgreens or Walmart pharmacy and get it checked.

Could be anemia, low blood pressure, low blood sugar, dehydration or a combo. Just go to your Doc and get things checked out

I had these symptoms and was anemic but I also have blood pressure on the lower side. Since fixing my iron defficiency my symptoms are a lot less frequent but do occasionally come back mostly when I haven't been drinking enough water

Weight loss and exercise help lower your blood pressure. When I was at my highest, my blood pressure was 110/70 +/-, so still not high. It was suggested to me to eat a pickle before my workout, but the times I actually remembered to do it weren't times that I really needed it, so I don't know if that works. It would be a good idea to get it checked, though, and just be careful so you don't pass out! I had a patient pass out on me once just helping him up from the toilet.

go to the doctor! not a good idea to self-diagnose with something like this. It very well could be as simple as an iron deficiency, but if your symptoms are that severe, your doctor might prescribe something specific. There's always that tiny chance that it could be something that requires more serious treatment, so ask your doc. better to be safe than sorry!

I appreciate all of your advice!

I will arrange to see a doctor to check my blood pressure. I'll also see if i can get hold of some iron tables ! I hope it's nothing serious, I've never passed out but have been close to it sometimes. It could sometimes happen just from bending over to put something down and then lifting my head back up.

Def see a doctor. I suffer iron deficiency anemia, and experience periods of what you are describing often, multiple times a day actually. I can't take supplements because it causes other issues for me. Iron is a very important mineral for our bodies. While red meat contains lots of iron, other sources I use to help are beans and cereals. I track my iron consumption and find that days I have cereal for breakfast I am much more likely to meet my iron needs for the day. And someone else mentioned as well, that Vitamin C aids in the absorption of Iron. Always follow meats with a glass of OJ!
  • Yes get a doctors advice,

Also are you sure you are eating enough?

I have blacked out a few times, mostly due to a sudden change in blood pressue, but this also happened when I had not eaten properly and was most likely anemic.

Iron deficient anemia usually manifests as easy bruising and fatigue. Pretty much the only way for your body to get rid of iron is to bleed and as women have a menstrual cycle they are often more prone to having lower iron. If you are worried about it, get some blood work done by your doc prior to starting iron supplementation because if you aren't deficient it and start taking it you could end up with hemochromatosis or hemosiderosis which are pretty nasty.

Light headedness and rapid heartbeat upon standing are referred to as orthostatic hypotension and usually indicate low blood volume/blood pressure. Not sure what your sodium intake is or how much water you're drinking but if either of these is low, try increasing them a little and see if this alleviates it.

Vasovagal syncope is another possibility but as you aren't completely passing out this is unlikely. Even if it was the case it's totally harmless in and of itself. The only danger is falling and hitting your head when you pass out.

My money is on low blood pressure. Try more water and sodium if they're low and if this doesn't help then call your doc.

Get thee to the doctor! My older brother had similar symptoms to this and consequently had to have a pace maker due to issues with his hearts electrical system (put simply, I like ^^^^^^^). Better safe than sorry.. I have had low BP and suffer similar symptoms without the heart defect on occasion..

And please don't start taking iron supplements without having your levels tested. Taking too much can make you quite sick too, and the pills often cause constipation. Not something fun to deal with if you don't need too.

See a doc and have an exam with bloodwork including a full thyroid panel and an iron panel (you don't jsut need to know ireon, you need to know ferritin levels).
  • I took a quick look at your diary and you are getting nowhere near enough complex carbs?

You are 19. Play soccer? How tall are you? You are also not getting enough calories nor protein.

You have to eat and take supplements like an athlete to sustain your energy levels.

Keep lifting but ignore everything but squats, deadlfts, and bench/standing press and get really heavy in those for a few weeks before anything else. You need to build a base of strength.

That will give you the appetite to eat cleaner. You should be taking in your body weight in grams in protein.

You also need more complex carbs.

Most importantly take "Orange Triad" a multi vitamin.

Guarantee you won't feel dizzy any more, no need to see a doc. You are just undereating when you should be lifting and eating all the protein you feel like.

Don't worry about the micro-alchemy, worry about your macro's first and your main lifts.

Your goal is not to lose weight by limiting your calories. Just lift heavy weights and eat tons of protein, don't worry about losing weight worry about putting on slabs of muscle via protein intake and the rest will sort itself out automatically and replace your fat with the good stuff.

The first step in losing weight isnt to "lose weight" and under-eat.

Low iron or anemia is pretty rare in guys, and the symptoms definitely sound more like a vagus nerve problem or a blood pressure issue. I would definitely get checked out by a doctor. It may be as simple as you're not eating enough calories, as well.
