Quit smoking - worried about weight gain

Hi,

I have recently just turned 25 and really want to quit smoking.

I know that is may sound silly overall but I am worried that when I quit I will gain weight. I guess the only way to know is to try. I just thought maybe I could get some feedback.

I currently weigh around 45kgs (155cm tall).

I know not to replace not smoking with eating in excess but I have read alot of forums about this topic and most smokers that quit put on a fair bit of weight. I don't want to put on any. I have heard that when you stop smoking your metabolism slows down, hence the weight gain.

Has anyone quit and also not put on weight? Any feedback would be great!

I also train quite regularly 3-4 times a week, for 45mins.

Thanks.

You probably will gain a bit of weight but the health (and financial) rewards from quitting smoking will outweigh that temporary weight gain in the long run, e.g. in a few months. Log your food on here, be aware what you're putting in your mouth in place of cigarettes, and keep up the exercise. Many people do put on weight but it's likely most of them are not keeping track of their calories so you are already more likely not to gain weight than anyone else in your situation. Good luck!

It does not affect your metabolism but many people turn to food as a replacement and as their tastebuds come back food tastes better so they eat more, i know friends thaat have given up and gained nothing. Good luck!

As long as you don't eat anything to replace cigarettes, you should be fine. It's all about calories in and calories out.

I heard a rumour that bananas help with cravings, might be worth a shot, however, I have no proof to back it up.

Good luck, and just like the above poster said, the health benefits of quitting will far outweigh the few lbs you might gain, and lose again!

I quit using an e-cig/vaporizer and am very happy with it. I haven't gained any weight and quitting was virtually effortless. I'm still using the e-cig (it's been since October) but I've dropped the level of nicotine by half and as soon as I run out of liquid, I'll drop it to the lowest it goes, and then to nothing. I actually prefer it to smoking.
