I appreciate the input, guys. Thank you.

My main reasoning for considering daily weigh-ins is to get a better understanding for how things affect my body. I won't be recording this on MFP or anything - it is only for me. I think understanding why my body does what it does will help keep me from getting frustrated. For example, if I know from experience water weight from a trip to Subway hangs around for two days, I won't be too upset when I see I'm up two days later.

I can't weigh daily because I am recovering from bulimia...I obsess too much over it. Just be careful that you don't obsess over it too much or you'll start weighing yourself 5-20 times in one day. Otherwise, go for it.

For the most part I have been a daily weigher. I stopped for a while and did once or twice a week for a couple months, but I actually gained weight (Yes, my eating played a big part, couldn't stop myself from eating the Christmas cookies!). So I went back to daily weigh-in's. It's just better for me to track the daily trends, and know when I need to back off the sodium or drink more water.

Do you use a specific app, or do you remember your weights a different way?

Yup, the daily trends are exactly what I want to keep an eye on!

I don't use an app or anything, it just helps me mentally each morning to know where I'm at, and it helps with my motivation and eating for the day. I may actually look into getting an app, so let me know if you find a good one! Also, I only record on MFP if my weight is lower than the last recorded weight by at least a half pound.

Ipad users, there is a great app called Happy Scale which has little goals you can reach and also averages out your weigh ins and set a smooth trend line. I love it.

I usually weigh in daily, but I don't let the # change my mood much, I use it more as a reference point. I only track my weight on here once a week, usually every Wed morning and I don't record the rest of the time (no reason for it being Wed, I just got into the habit)

I weigh daily and it is very motivating. I track mainly using a spreadsheet that I have which calculates a trend and a 10-day rolling average. It then compares those numbers to previous measurements to give me a current predicted range of weight loss. Like today, it estimates that my current weight loss is between 1.06 and 1.15 kg/week. I'm less focused on the exact number itself than I am on the fact that it's positive and above 0.4kg/week.

I feel like the people who resist daily weigh-ins because of fluctuations miss the point. They openly admit that weight can fluctuate by several pounds due to many factors, then they insist that weighing once a week will remove the effect of those fluctuations (while they know their rate of loss will be many times smaller than the magnitude of the fluctuations). Using averages to get a better approximation of your real weight, and then using successive approximations to determine the direction and magnitude of change is much more useful and less stressful.

I weigh daily, always have. Since logging my food too, I have learned alot about how my body reacts to which foods / hormones / etc. And was surprised by some of them.

I log my weight here daily including all fluctuations, plus I have an excel spread sheet, where I track different things along with my weight. I also calculate my weekly loss from Sunday to Saturday. I often have a big weekly loss, followed by 1-2 smaller ones. Seeing that has helped me accept my daily fluctuations and the different size losses, even when I know, I've done everything 'right'.

Weighing daily also keeps me a bit more accountable...but that is just me.
  • I weigh twice a day :D lol, morning and night and know how much more I will weigh at night then in the morning lol

I weigh daily and love it, but you have to be prepared to watch yourself gain sometimes even when you do everything right. As long as normal fluctuation won't throw off your motivation then do it!

I weigh daily as well and have since the beginning. It helps to keep me on track and motivated.
Many will tell you not to do this, but you have to do what works for you in all aspects of this new way of living, JMHO.

I highly recommend trendweight.com if you plan to weigh in every day. It really helps to sort out the daily fluctuations and to give a good indication if you are heading in the right direction or not.

It really motivates me if my weigh-ins start to get close to hitting the trend line (which would mean a plateau). I turn up my workouts a notch and make sure I'm on track with my diet.

Having 30 data-points to calculate a monthly trend tells you much more than only having four.

I weigh in daily, log it in my excel sheet and move on with my day. It's more data that will help me if my trend starts moving in the wrong direction, as long as it's still moving in an overall downward direction than it's all good to continue what I'm doing.

If you put any emotional attachment to the number on the scale my suggestion would be not to weigh daily, but if you can use it as a tool for data than go for it.

I weigh daily... but only record a loss when I've seen it 2 days in a row. It depends on the person... some are driven to insanity seeing the constant up and down.

Same here. I only record in the mornings though, daily here on MFP. I can usually tell what I'll be in the morning by what I weight at night, and what I've eaten or done for exercise.

Any recommendations for programs besides Libra and Trendweight? Libra doesn't seem to be working on my phone, and I don't want to change my Fitbit weight every day (which is linked to MFP) for Trendweight to work.

  • I'm a HUGE fan of weighing daily. I have a digital scale, and when I was losing weight consistently, I'd be able to see it come off at .2/.4 at a time. It was a happy feeling every morning! Of course, you have to be able to accept it when you go up those .2/.4 instead, because it will happen.

I thought about this when I started out monitoring my weight last year - on one hand, weighing daily could lead to a kind of obsessive behaviour and I might find myself dreading the scale every day. On the other hand, weekly weights may also lead to some confusion because of hormonal fluctuations during the month.

So I began doing a combination of measuring daily but only looking at averages.

What I do is this. I take my weight every morning. I don't think much about it but I log it in a spreadsheet which gives me weekly averages. I then plot the weekly average at the end of every week in a graph. Over the last 6-7 months, I've looked at this chart a couple of times in a month. The weight goes up, it goes down, it stays flat, if I look on a week to week basis - but if I look at the general trend line, there is a slow but definite downward trend - and that's reassuring.

Yes it’s a bit geeky and obsessive in its own way – but for me this method has allowed me to avoid getting obsessed while being fairly sure I am evening out short term blips caused by hormones/water weight/post-exercise muscle swelling/ fluid retention. So If my daily weight goes up or down, now i don't panic - I figure it will even out either in the same week or at least over 2-3 weeks.

This is what a 20 pound weight loss has looked like over 10 months.
