Can you 'make' hips in the gym?

  • Looks like your only option is plastic surgery.

I personally don't mind the look of the dip,..and in fact might even prefer it. To each his own though.

What are hip dips and why you should stop caring about them. (Source: http://size10plz.tumblr.com)
Lately on my dash I’ve been seeing posts about hip dips, and anonymous questions on how to prevent hip dips or how much they hate theirs.
I just want to let you know that it’s normal. The celebrities or girls in your thinspo tags that you see that don’t have it either are wearing spanx, they’re photo shopped, or you just plain don’t see it.
I have never met any one that didn’t have one. It’s part of our anatomy, and on some is more noticeable than others. It all depends on your body type, muscle, and fat distribution.
Most children in north america have heard this song in pre-school and kinder garden, but for most it’s been a while so I thought I’d give you a refresher course.

That is exactly what a “hip dip” is. It’s because the femur attaches to the acetabulum which is made up of all three hip bones: the ilium, ischium, and pubis.
You get a hip dip from being born with a skeleton.

Those celebrities/thinspo girls that you look up to and think, “oh I wish I didn’t have a hip dip. They are so lucky they don’t have one.” Hate to break it to ya (not really), but they have it too.

Everyone has one, but sometimes it’s not as noticeable. Men and women have it, but it’s more noticable on women because our hips are generally wider. Like I said earlier it’s really about fat, and muscle distribution. Some women have it more noticeable, some don’t, but it doesn’t mean it’s not there. I know I have it, and I have never met anyone who is like “ew your hip dip is so gross.”
Remember the picture with Britney spears vs Photoshop? Even she has one.

We have to Remember that we live in a world where spanx is readily available to smooth out our lumps and insecurities to common folk and celebrities alike. Along with photoshop to take away “imperfections” on celebrities so we can feel ****ty about ourselves. All while we read magazines or see adverts with conflicting messages like “you’re beautiful” and an advert for make up right or weight loss tips next to it.

^ This is a wonderful reply. I have this too, but, honestly, I never even thought about it until now.

If you're really worried, work on the hip exercises mentioned earlier. Don't expect miracles though. It's just the way you, and a lot of other women, are built.

    This

I would think the only way to avoid having one would be to gain a lot, and I mean a lot, of fat specifically in your hip region, without gaining any in your belly, but or thighs, but that really isn't possible.

You might make it less noticeable by doing some exercises that target your hips.... but I doubt it would eliminate it.

I think you need to learn to be more accepting of your body, you are likely the only person who thinks that dip is a negative feature.

Not wanting to sound offensive, but I think from your drawing that's more muffin top/love handle than thigh issue!

Losing fat, and doing resistance work focusing on your legs and glutes will help give you a curvier shape :)
Yeah it's not fat I have that too, and it's all bone there..

I had hip dip when I was a super fit teenager, and I have it now as a fat adult. It is what it is. As a teen I was self-conscious of it (damn you, photoshop!) but now it's like, meh. It is a normal part of being a human woman

the 'dreaded' part was meant to come off sarcastic! haha but thanks for all the amazing answers.

I have pretty good legs if I may say so... Only part of me that is 'shapely'. So the dip there doesn't really bother me. I just can't seem to get a smaller waist, I'm pretty straight up and down in the stomach region, so larger hips seemed like the other solution!
If only you could smoosh fat into the places you wanted.

    QFT!

I'm at work and I've just gone to the bathroom to check if I have a 'hip dip', and yep, I do! Seriously, I never knew this was a thing until I read this. It saddens me that people dislike perfectly normal parts of their bodies so much. I'm not an expert in anatomy but it's obviously just where your legs join onto your hips, what's to dislike about that? I'm sure almost everyone has it!

OP, you're beautiful. Please don't concern yourself with such insignificant things. Judging from your pic, you'd rock a skin tight dress, 'hip dip' or not. :flowerforyou:

Aw, you! :blushing: I'm not rocking back and forth crying over it, but I am a bit of a perfectionist and was curious. :)

I'm sorry! It's really hard to read sarcasm over the internet. (Of all the useless technological breakthroughs we've had, why not something that makes sarcasm obvious? Get on it, Google!) I thought you were being serious, so I gave you the NO STOP IT answer.

In actual seriousness though, as another poster already said: you're completely beautiful, and it's revolting that some peripheral media has planted the idea in people's minds that some parts of their body are ugly or shameful, when in reality they are the way they are as a form of function! The 'hip dip' for example, exists so that we can run and bend and jump and dance, and when I remember that I'm happy to have one (but damn, do I have to stop and think about it because the critical voice is so much louder than the practical one!)

So basically, just punch your inner perfectionist in the face. Her vision of what you should be like forgets to take into account the part where you're already an amazing and complete human being, and even if you want to leave the 'love yourself' spiel behind-- you look fantastic anyway! I bet I've seen you at St Kilda Beach and thought 'ugh that ***** I hate her and her perfect legs ugh' ;)

I am very obviously wider at my thighs than my hips. And yes I have the dreaded 'hip dip'.

Can you build up hips through exercise? Or if you don't have it genetically is it just not achievable?

Before and after pictures of any success stories would be amazing!
Hip width is predetermined by genetics. You can't widen then through exercise since the width is already set by how your bones are.

Not having a hip dip is unrealistic, I think. Humans usually have a pelvis and femurs, so they'll usually have a hip dip. If they don't, it's probably photoshop that does it, not an exercise.

Lol. Women are so weird. Like guys would sit around worrying about their hip dip. Lol.

I can't- I just can't. I can't even begin to understand how people even being to worry about this stuff.

I mean I know guys have their penis size issues- but it's not like they sit around talking about this stuff for hours and hours on end- there are not pages and pages of penis gap/wrinkle/head issues running rampant .

I don't get it. I cannot even comprehend.

What's wrong with the "hip dip"? It's actually something I want. My friend calls it the "swail" and he's a big fan of it. Hip dip = tight booty.

I have a 'hip dip' (I have never heard the term before today) But I have had to deal with it for years, since it is waay more pronounced on one side. I have to be careful about what clothes I wear because it is noticeable only on the one side and it looks odd, totally not normal or natural.
I have not sat and talked about nor obsessed about, but when I try on new clothes I am very aware of it.

Also the OP didn't know it was bone structure at the beginning, hell neither did I therefore didn't know it couldn't be changed.
You are also generalizing a few persons concern over their body with the obsessive body issues other people have.

Guys also obsess and discuss normal stuff. I cant tell you how many conversions I have heard or been involved in with males and their hair.

Also now you have me curious what a bikini bridge is??

Work your glutes out. The glutes are VERY strong and very underexercised muscles. that hip dimple comes from a strong *kitten*. Your hip width is your hip with. You need to extend the bottom!
