Starting over

Hi, I started using MFP last summer but fell by the wayside. I hope that my renewed effort will bring results. Having started in earnest last week I am impressed with my results so far, however my target of losing a total of 62 pounds seems a long way off. Being old and with a lot of health issues I have tread a fine line between eating a balanced healthy diet and trying to exercise within my physical limitations.
The biggest problem is comfort eating. Living alone now after a long and successful marriage the evenings are worse, sitting in front of the telly by myself with just my thoughts for company. Daytime is no problem, down to the gym a brisk walk on the treadmill or a half mile swim, followed by a cuppa in the cafe, a bit of shopping and then doing some visiting in the afternoon. All this provides a distraction from the comfort eating, but every evening when I shut the curtains, that is the problem time.
I use my computer a lot as a distraction, but there is a limit to how much time you can spend surfing, or internet shopping, I'm already well overspent. I feel unsafe going out at night on my own, mainly because of my age and my sight is quite poor in the dark.
Anyway, it's good to get that off my chest, as I said my results so far are good so I must stop all this negativity and get on with it!

It's always good to get those kind of things off your chest. You are in the driver's seat with this program!! So keep talking, keep reading and keep working at it. We all are a work in progress!!

I totally relate to what you are saying, because evenings are my weak times, too.
I made a rule that I can't have any snacks after 7pm. I have not been succeeding recently, though I am getting way better than I was. I try to think of it as doctors orders (because really, my goal is heath, and doc said it would help...though it isn't a prescription)
If I am understanding correctly, you aren't eating out of hunger...but out of habit and boredom and emotion? (that tends to be my evening issue as well) Change it up? Find something to keep your hands busy? Brush and floss your teeth so you don't want to dirty them again by eating or drinking anything but water? Find a new hobby that requires concentration or hand work? I'm just brainstorming here.
Best wishes on your journey. Hang in there.0
