According to your measurements you're a straight body type, which over half of the female population actually is.
If you were to subcategorize yoruself, you'd probably be a slender hourglass, because it is obvious there is some definition.
To be an hourglass shape however, I think your waist needs to be 9 inches smaller than your bust, or something crazy like that.
I just used this calculator and it said my body is not in the 4 shapes they described. Lol
My current measurements are 35-27-37.0 -
38.5-27-38.5 Would not mind if my boobs and butt shrunk to 37, still have 8lbs to lose so here's hoping.
I just figured my hip to waist ratio and its .70..it used to be .78 Thank you heavy lifting!0 -
I only have an 8.5 inch difference and if that calulator and other ladies on here are anything to go by I either don't have a shape or would be straight.
However everyone I know says I'm an hourglass because my waist "looks" much smaller than my bust and hips.
So personally, I would still call myself hourglass.
So measurements only count for so much?
Measurements and visual aid combined?0 -
40.5 - 30.5 - 41 inches. I do consider myself and hourglass. I'd like to keep that kind of shape, but a lot less of it!0

Just a quick note, there have been a lot of studies on body geometry, symmetry and how people perceive beauty. Generally anytime a women's waist is .7 of her hips or greater it would be considered an hourglass figure.
@Juliebelanger22 by the formula above you would be a perfect hourglass for your size.
This .7 ratio also has been found to be what men are attracted to world wide, across all ages (studies included ages from 10-90).
I looked this up earlier this week and found the 25% rule below, which is pretty close to the 70% (inverse 30%) rule quoted. Different sites use shoulder vs. bust measurements; for me, the result is the exact same thing, but it might create a different result for someone else!
Also, "waist" in the section below is defined as tailor's waist or natural waist, generally far above "belly button waist".
"Rectangle/Banana/Ruler/Boyish/etc. - You shoulder and hip measurement are within 5% of each other and you waist is less than 25% less than the larger of the other two
Inverted Triangle - Your shoulders are more than 5% larger than your hips
Triangle/Pear - You hips are more than 5% larger than your shoulders
Hourglass - You shoulder and hip measurement are within 5% of each other and your waist is at least 25% less than the larger of the other two"
By this rule then I am definitely an hourglass.
I wonder why all the calulators insist on difference rules...?0 -

Fingers crossed you should be fine.
I lost 3 inches off my boobs and hips and 5 off my waist.
So I've fairly evenly gone down overall.
As a side note, I lost more of my thighs than I did off my hips and boobs (yay!) Though if I lose anymore off my boobs I might cry :P
Edited to note: Forgot to say my measurements were very similar to yours, except you are better off in the tummy department. My tummy was quite big :P0 -

Mine are the same stats if you reverse the bust and hips! I'm only trying to lose a bit off the waist and lower tummy, though. I'm actually pretty darned solid that big! Yes, I was supposed to be 6' tall, I think0 -
chest:33
waist:26.5
hips:38
shoulders:37.
Its really not so much about your boobs evening out your hips as it is your shoulders! You could easily be totally flat and still be an hourglass if your shoulders and hips match!0 -
38-25-36. Semi hourglass. I tend to lean out in my waist first. If I get too lean, it tends to look a little odd in my opinion with such a drastic difference between the hips and waist.0

I agree. Working out my shoulders has really added to the hourglass effect.0 -

I think that the 9 or 10-inch rule is not very useful. There's gotta be a difference whether you are 5'2 or 6'3... using the same 10 inche difference sounds weird. But I guess it is nothing really scientific anyways0 -

Agree with this too
34/27/41 Need to measure shoulders0 -
41-30-40
High five! Me, too (a half inch off). How tall are you? You look really great, and I'm hoping you aren't incredibly tall or something
And how do y'all measure your shoulders? I know mine are actually around the same width as my ribcage and smaller than my bust or butt, but they stick out farther than my bust or hips in the front view because they aren't nearly as circular, lol. I'm just glad they are bigger across than any other measurement, even if that means they have to be quite broad.0 -

Most common female body shapes
The following are the four most common female body shapes:
Apple (triangle downward)
Apple-shaped women have broader shoulders and bust, and narrower hips.
Banana, or straight (rectangular)
Banana-shaped women's waist measurement is less than 9 inches smaller than the hip or bust measurement.
Pear, Spoon, or Bell (triangle upward)
Pear-shaped women's hip measurements are greater than their bust measurements.
Hourglass Shape (triangles opposing, facing in)
Here, the hip and bust are almost of equal size, with a narrow waist.
A study of more than 6,000 women conducted at North Carolina State University in 2005 revealed that 46% of women were banana-shaped; just over 20% were pear-shaped; just under 14% were apple-shaped; and only 8% were hourglass-shaped. The hourglass is normally accepted as the "ideal" female shape in Western countries.0
