cheat days

I have a few questions!

- can they really help your metabolism?
- how often should a cheat day occur?
- does this mean you eat junk food that you normally wouldn't, or just go over a calorie goal with normal food?
- how many calories do you usually go over?
- do you still log good for that day?

A cheat day is a day you don't stress about what you're eating and just eat what you want when you want. You really shouldn't do them too often (once a month) but you should still log so when you weigh yourself you know how many calories you set yourself back.
  • As long as you log all of your foods, you can do cheat days then make up for it the next day!

I don't think "cheat days" help metabolism.

I don't plan cheat days, however sometimes a special occasion occurs like a birthday or an event and I am not gonna bring my food scale with me and start weighing my food lol.

Usually before and after the event I eat light meals and basically 'dedicate' a majority of my days calories to the event. I do log it, but it is all guess work since you have to eyeball everything. Since its all guess work, there really isn't a good way of telling how many calories I go over but I still log it.

I don't let it ruin my day or my week, its OK to have days like that. You can't let it happen all the time but like I said usually birthdays, events, special dinners. Those things don't happen but once in awhile and I have no problems with those days. Some people freak out about them, they shouldn't. Logging food should not get in the way of real life.

So yes, birthdays and other events that include cake and ice cream I take my cake and I eat it too. I just try and do honest guesswork when I log.

I don't avoid junk food, if I want to eat something I eat it, but log it accurately and go on with my days, trying to hit my macros.

I don't do entire cheat days, I'll have a cheat meal once a week or every other week.
An entire day is far too much room for error with most people. They think "Screw it! It's my cheat day" and vacuum in all surrounding junk food. Factor in a cheat day EVERY week and you can add up *a lot* of calories that can put a dent in your progress.

Even with a cheat meal, I'll still log it to keep track. I know it'll put me over on a macro or two, but I keep it in check by monitoring it anyways. And by cheat meal, I don't mean go to McDonalds and order half the menu, but maybe having a larger portion than normal, having a scoop of mom's homemade macaroni and cheese for Sunday dinner or maybe a piece or two of pizza on football Sundays.

ETA: I also don't severely limit my food variety even on regular days. If I want a piece of chocolate, I'll eat it, log it, and make it fit for the day. I just don't go overboard.

I don't believe that they help your metabolism, but I'm not starving myself to lose weight either. Personally, I try to limit them to cheat meals too, cheat day is just way too dangerous and you could easily end up thousands over your goal (well, Christmas is an exception). I don't really consider it cheating unless I'm going over my TDEE though, and that happens once every 2 months or something... Usually 800 or 1000 over. Otherwise I just fit what I want within my calories.

I do cheat days every now and then .. For me a cheat day is a day I just don't log my food. I don't necessarily stuff my face with donuts or anything... Last week I had a "cheat evening" I logged everything up until dinner. I went out with a couple friends. I had one drink and a few bites or dessert... We shared. And I ate a pretty reasonable amount of my actual dinner.

I have heard some experienced folk here talk about incorporating 'refeeds' during cutting. I think they can be helpful when it comes to those last few lbs.

In my own *personal* experience in the past (when I lost 65lbs) I would have a cheat day about once every few weeks. These mostly occurred unplanned with special events or family meals that were last minute. For me I considered it a cheat day because I went over my calories. I tried to keep it within reason - no more than 1000 calories over. *FOR ME* it did do something for my metabolism or had some effect because it never failed that I would lose .5 to 1 pound MORE than I normally lost weekly. I did drink loads of water the next day because I would be bloated, especially if my day included more sugar and salt than normal, but within the two days of a cheat day, yes I did notice my scale go down slightly more.

I think it all depends on *your* body. Yes this worked for me but it doesn't mean it will work for everyone. I should also note that I didn't have a "cheat day" until after about 3 months of really keeping my intake in check.

Still log your food so you can make sure you don' t go crazy. And that way you can look back and make sure you aren't having these days too close together.

This whole weight loss thing is kind of trial and error. Something work for some people, other things don't.

I'm not giving this as advice, I'm just saying what I do and my experience now and in the past:

Results and pattern: Over the course of 18 months, I lost 80 lbs. That was 2 years ago. I gained 20 lbs back since then and am now losing that 20. I've lost 13 so far. During my initial and current weight loss, I have maintained this eating pattern.

My Cheat Days: I have one cheat day every week - Saturdays. I use it for motivation purposes, and I pair it with a long run (I'm training for a marathon). I eat clean and very portion controlled for the other 6 days, staying within or under my calorie budget. If there is a special event, I save the cheat day for that day. There is only one cheat day a week. If I crave chocolate cake on a Sunday, it has to wait for the next cheat day.

What I eat on my cheat days: absolutely anything I want, in whatever quantity I want, whenever I want. I satisfy every craving. But only on this one day.

The reality: Being very portion controlled and eating cleanly the rest of the week means that my stomach isn't used to large quantities anymore. And, if I eat too much and/or the wrong things (like really greasy food), I wont' feel so good. So, it sort of prevents me from eating 5,000 calories during that day. But I can sometimes hit 3,500.

The aftermath: Sometimes constipation and initial weight gain as all that junk filters through my system. After 24 hours, Elvis has left the building and life is completely normal.

I haven't had any effects of it speeding up my metabolism either way.
Personally I'll probably have a cheat day once a week. My meals are definitely more balanced than they used to be and I generally eat what I want, just smaller portions and within my daily deficit. My cheat days are saved for when my boyfriend and I go out for dinner and I don't usually go over 1,000 extra calories. The rest of my meals are generally lower in calorie than normal but if I'm hungry during the day, I still eat. An example would be having fruit for breakfast, soup or salad for lunch and then maybe Pizza Express for dinner having either no starter or shared dough balls. Pizza for main (I don't go out of my way to get a veggie or low-calorie option unless I fancy it) and I find I eat slower because I enjoy it that bit more. Probably have a glass of wine or G+T too and just a bite of my boyfriend's dessert- not much of a sweet tooth.
On these days I up my exercise a bit more or workout harder the next day. I log most of my food, but sometimes I just forget or don't worry about it.
