Carbonated Drinks

I was watching My 600lb Life yesterday and one of the woman that underwent the gastric bypass surgery she was scolded because she had one diet coke soda. The doctor said the carbonation could stretch her stomach. I understand the bariatric patients have to watch things more so than people cutting calories, but can anyone tell me if you cut out carbonation and what it did for your weight loss efforts?

Is that even a medical term?0

I cut soda and alcohol from my diet and have dropped 13 lbs since. I drink carbonated water with a lemon or lime wedge as a substitute...
I highly doubt the carbonation is the core dietary problem in any soda.0 -
I use diet sodas and seltzer waters to stay full .. because well, yes, the carbonation stretches my stomach and makes me feel full.0

Carbonated drinks CAN lead to heartburn in some people, because they cause the pyloric sphincter to allow stomach acids up into the esophagus.
I know when my MiL had a stomach resection, nothing carbonated was allowed, for a long time. I'm not sure if she was ever allowed to drink it again, actually.
WHen you are dealing with a resection, any kind of carbonation is likely to blow the stitches, or stress the scar tissue. Not sure if that diminishes over time.0 -
I cut out carbonated drinks for a couple months and didn't notice anything noticeable in regards to weight loss... when I started drinking them again and didn't notice any undesirable effects either.. :drinker:0

I've never enjoyed carbonated drinks more than I do water, so I'm definitely at an advantage if I ever need anything medical like that0

First off I have a close friend that had the stomach stapling surgery about 10 years ago. The doc said no soda for the sugar dumping problem not the carbonation. She drinks soda ALL the time. I'm not even exaggerating. It's the one thing her stomach has no problems with. I'm so done talking to her about it. She had maintained her weight loss.
Me, I stopped drinking soda for a completely different reason. I drank diet. January 2012 I stopped for what was going to be 1 month. After 3 weeks I couldn't believe how much better I felt and how greatly reduced my sugar cravings were. I haven't had a soda since. I did go through some minor withdrawals, but I found other things to enjoy besides water. I'm totally fine with it now.0
