My success with Oatmeal

This is something I feel deserves to be shared. I have always heard of how great Oatmeal is for you and how much fiber it contains. However, I have always struggled to get through a bowl more than once a week. Since I have started using mfp, I have rededicated myself to eating oatmeal.

About two weeks ago, I bought a bunch of frozen fruit. Once I began adding blueberries and just a tiny amount of brown sugar, I am hooked!

Oatmeal has had such a tremendous effect on my diet for the rest of the day. Nearly everyday that I eat oatmeal, I end up struggling to get enough calories. I am simply not as hungry, and don't worry, I make sure to eat all my calories :) If there has been once constant tip/suggestions I have given others, it is to try and use oatmeal as much as possible in your diet.

I eat oatmeal for my 6 AM breakfast 3-5 times a week, and I put a little honey on it. I've really gotten to like it!

I eat steel cut oatmeal every day 7 days a week with either blueberries or raisins and cinnamon. It is so good for you. I can't say it makes me full but I know it is a healthy breakfast.

Yumm I LOVE oatmeal. Have it almost everyday, and especially in winter it's so nice to have something warm and comforting in the mornings! I've been craving sweet things recently and so I've been adding a tablespoon of sugar free apricot jam along with my regular blueberries. Only an extra 10 or 20 cals and sooo nice

Thank you for your posts on oatmeal. I was just thinking today how much I struggle to eat it. I usually eat if for breakfast when I made bad choices the previous day. Kind of like a punishment. I would like to be able to enjoy it more and thus eat it more regularly. Thanks for the suggestions! I will definately give them a try.

I added between 1/2 T to a tablespoon of natural peanut butter to my oatmeal or some cut up apples. I love oatmeal. It's amazing

Agreed. Oatmeal is amazing. I use to HATE it too. Definitely get the container of Quakers and not the ones in the pouches. I like to add Sugar/Artificial Sweeter. If I have some extra calories I'll add peanut butter and whipped cream, possibly even jelly.

I love oatmeal. :) I can't stand the instant oatmeal though...just not as filling. I make rolled oats with almond milk and whip sliced bananas in while cooking it. Makes it taste amazing without having to add sugar. Then I go crazy with my toppings. :P

I used to love oatmeal, and then I stopped eating it for some reason...but I forgot the reason. So thanks to this post, I am going to start eating more oatmeal. However, I cannot stand it with water. I have to heat it up with MILK; otherwise, I cannot eat it!

I usually have mine with blackberries, blueberries, flax seed & splenda brown sugar. It definitely keeps me fuller for longer too!
Funny to read this post right now, my hubby is out of town so instead of making dinner I just had oatmeal!! Lol

Me too...I always wondered if I was an odd ball b/c everyone talks a bout how filling it is. But it doesn't do it for me.
  • I love putting 2 tbsp of ground flax, half a chopped apple and a good dose of cinnamon. Sometimes I add a little agave syrup for a little sweetness. I find its not always super filling or satisfying, but I know how good it is for me.

If I have oatmeal (like 1/3 c, 100 cals) for a snack or lunch I'm starving within an hour...but for breakfast it's fine.

I used to despise it. Now I am totally addicted. I eat it every morning and its become my favourite meal of the day.

Youve got to try it with a teaspoon of honey and grated granny smith apple. Sooo delicious. Also I teaspoon of honey, half a banana and some raspberries or blueberries. So yummy and really good for you.

I used to hate it, but that's because I was cooking it in water and not adding the "right" ingredients to flavor it. I personally use almond milk to cook it, and I flavor it with sugar free protein powders so I get fiber and protein together for double the appetite killing punch. I also add strawberries and cinnamon and it is great!

I've hated it every time I tasted it made with water...no matter what I dumped in it to flavor it...but almond milk only adds 60 calories, very little fat, no cholesterol...etc.

And it gives me a great amount of energy for my intense workouts!!!

Me four. I have tried different types of oatmeal and I always make it with milk or soymilk and it is so yummy, but I end up just wanting more :frown: I am actually trying to cut oatmeal OUT of my diet after I finish the one huge container I bought

I  oatmeal! I eat my old-fashioned oats six mornings a week. Sunday is pancake day. I put Sugar in the Raw and cinnamon in mine. I use a fair amount of salt when I cook it too, which makes it so much tastier. I don't worry much about sodium. My BP is pretty low (90/60 on average) and I don't eat a lot of processed foods, so I figure I'm OK to add salt to my foods to taste.

Thanks for the almond milk tip. Tried old fashioned oatmeal today for the first time (instead of my beloved instant pouches). I used water and .... ick. Even with a couple packets of splenda and some peanut butter, it was okay but not GOOD. Maybe the almond milk will help it out. (Do you use original, vanilla? Sweetened or unsweeteend?)

The other weird finding is.... I'm now pretty hungry. It didn't seem to satisfy like the instant stuff. That HAS to be in my head!

You can also add liquid Stevia for no addtional calories. You can also make Lemonade with this or "homeade Sprite" Just add lemon juice (the real stuff not "real Lemon") and a couple drops of Stevia and there you go or add it to sparkling water. SOOO GOOD!! I add stevia to everything

are you eating the "instant" oatmeal with the added flavours? It's loaded with refined sugars that spike your insulin just like sugar cereals.

Try Oats (not instant) with cinnamon and some natural peanut butter?
  • Please don't judge this recipe until you try it! My husband introduced me to it last year. We both eat this 3-4 times a week as it's a great filler and is packed with nutrition!
Take 1 cup of oatmeal, 1/2 cup of cottage cheese(fat free, low sodium) and about 1/4 cup of skim milk. Mix it into a glass dish and microwave for about 2 minutes. Mix it all up until the cottage cheese is completely melted. Add some stevia or splenda brown sugar for taste. I use just
I know it sounds weird but it make a great texture and it really sticks to the ribs. We eat around 5:30 am and I I'm not hungry until lunch.

I eat oatmeal 5-6 days a week and love it! 1/4 cup frozen blueberries and 2tbls wheat germ and 1tbls brown sugar. YUMMY!

Don't know about the other people with this problem, but I eat Quakers instant whole oats (not in packets, no flavoring) and still want to eat more!
