Hi everyone! I'm going a bit crazy here.

For the past few weeks I've been taking my diet pretty seriously, eating under 500 calories and working out every day to burn 400 or more. Over the last few days I've hovered at exactly 140 lbs (at 5'8), with my first goal to be into the 130s, so I've obviously been eager to see results and started working out even more. Yesterday I had a salad and a bowl of cereal, a combined total of 530 calories, and worked off 731 on the elliptical. Today upon weighing myself I've gained over half a pound and for the life of me can't seem to tip into the 130s. I'm doubtful that it'd be muscle mass, but whatever it is has me almost in tears; I'm just so close! Does anyone have any ideas as to what I could do? I know this isn't the healthiest route, but the aftereffects of an ED are still with me and believe it or not this is an improvement from what it used to be. Thanks for reading this!

You need to seek professional help. What you're doing is neither healthy nor sustainable. What's more important? The number on the scale or your health?

You're asking for help. Here it is: Eat more. Eat at least your BMR every day. Every. Single. Day. Unless you under constant doctor supervision, eating 500 calories per day is dangerous if not deadly. If you're exercising 700+ calories, and eating 500, you are living with probably at least a 1500 calorie per day deficit. This isn't healthy. It is counterproductive to your goal.

Please eat at least your BMR every day.

Your brain, muscles, nerves, hormones, and every person around you will thank you. Be safe.

Please be kind to your body and give it the fuel it needs. Fewer calories doesn't mean more weight loss. You need to consume enough net calories each day (which means eating back exercise calories) to meet your BMR. Not doing so is extremely dangerous for your health.

First, let me reiterate what the previous posters have said. You need to NET your BMR in calories at an absolute minimum.

Edited: forget it. At 130 and 5' 8", coming off of an ED with this mentality you shouldn't be trying to lose weight. You need to get that ED taken care of first.
  • That's not ED aftereffects, that's still being in the middle of it. I'm a bit doubtful of 700kcal burn on elliptical, unless you spend hours on it and then have that additional symptom, which is over exercise. But that much exercise or not, 500kcal is ridiculously low. It's too low for a patient in a coma. Nowhere near a reachable goal for a living adult human being.

You need medical treatment and not be allowed nowhere near a homemade "diet" or, in that case, suicide.

Building muscles is impossible with your diet and cardio exercise. In fact they will shrink, including your heart. You're also starving your brain, causing depression and increased difficulty to see things right and not in a very sick way. Yeah, neurotransmitters don't just "happen", they're transformed from precursors, almost all of them being found in food. That's another way you're spiralling down, by screwing up your brain chemistry.

You're right that you're not gaining muscle because your body can't build any at that deficit, you're probably losing muscle and gaining water weight as your body tries to repair itself.

Net at least your BMR otherwise your bodies going to be in a state, and also get medical guidance if you suffer from an ED.

Good luck hun, but please speak to a doctor. xxxx

EDIT Actually yeah just spotted that your 5'8" and 140 you're probably the lowest weight your body can be healthy at that's why it's battling you and you're not losing, if you don't like the way you look it's probably due to muscle wastage please see a doctor and eat above TDEE to get your muscle mass up.

If you are skeptical about what people on here are telling you, please google search eating too few calories. There is plenty of scientific data to back up these claims as well as solid explanations for why your body is responding they way it is. It's not about eating as little as you physically can. I know that seems backwards, but do a little research and you'll get it. Your body is your partner, not your enemy and you need to work with it for it to work with you.
