Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone knows about or have tried the plant-based diet Engine 2 Diet? For those who never heard of it, it promotes plant-based diet (vegan) with no oil or processed food. I am interested in trying it (I have been a vegetarian for 3 years now) but I am a bit afraid of quitting diary product since I have a very bad cheese addiction.
Anyone has tried it and can share their experience?

Thanks ,
Evelyn

There isn't anything wrong with extra virgin olive oil or other healthy oils so why would you want to give them up?

Seems a bit too restrictive ... nothing wrong with quality dairy and eggs ... and cheese, especially sheep's milk cheese, is actually healthy for you ... it's high in CLA, actually all grass-fed dairy is high in it ...

I've read it, as well as the author's father's book :) Both are good reads, but I don't think having a diet as restricted as the ones they promote are necessary for good health. I lean more towards Dr. Fuhrman's plan (author of Eat to Live). He promotes a whole foods, plant based diet but he also acknowledges that strictly eating this way has not been proven more effective for long term health and longevity of life than those who still eat a bit of meat and dairy (using data from various studies), as long as the majority of the diet is focused on nutrient dense plant based foods. He recommends a diet with a focus on 90% whole plant foods and then the other 10% is open for whatever you like (meat, dairy, oreos etc :) ). I'm eating this way and I love it!

Thanks for the info I'll check it out. My reason for trying is I don't feel good when I eat eggs and cheese. My body seems to have a hard time with dairy products these days and I heard about Engine 2 Diet so I wanted to see if it could work for me.

I think if you go vegan, you need to be really careful to make sure you're getting your nutritional needs met. Have you thought about where you're going to get your protein from? Also, your body absolutely needs fats, so going low fat as well as all the other things you'll be cutting out sounds a bit extreme and (from what you've said about your reasons) unnecessary. I'm not saying vegans can't be healthy, but from what I've heard from vegans I know, you need to really understand where you're getting your nutrients from and be able to plan your meals really well.

If you don't feel good eating eggs and cheese, then just don't eat them. No reason to cut out good fats like extra virgin olive oil, or nuts, or anything like that. Just make sure you eat a nutrient dense, quality whole-food diet and not the junk food vegan diet, and get enough protein.

If you're having a physical reaction to eggs and cheese I'd cut them out and see how you feel-you may have a sensitivity or an allergy. We're in the midst of doing this with my daughter right now, as dairy seems to be her IBS trigger. Health wise there's nothing wrong with a bit of dairy/cheese and eggs, but if your body can't handle them then that's a whole different story.

Eat to live and engine 2 are very similar. They both stress the importance of getting your fat from plant base foods that are found naturally. Nuts are not prohibited but moderated. I was raised a vegetarian and ate a pretty good diet my whole life but also ate alot of processed carbs. I recently became vegan because I was having issues with dairy ( getting old). These books are very enlightening and you will find that you dont need oil to cook and its just empty calories. You are far better off getting your fat from whole olives /avacado/ or nuts and keep the nutrition and fiber. Its enjoyable and on both diets you eat more food than you can ever imagine. 100 calories of peppers is a huge compared to 100 calories of oil. Try it ...you wont be hungry thats for sure!!!

I follow it myself and they don't really promote no fat they just promote getting your fat from whole foods. I use oil myself every now and again, but try not to on a regular basis. The problem with it is that you are taking in pure fat and not getting all the nutrients and fiber that would come along with say an olive or an avocado. Sometimes instead of oil I will use just water or veggie broth when cooking in a pan. I am also a firm believer in you have to find what works well for your body. I find that I do better without dairy and my body is much happier.

I follow the Engine 2 diet and don't find it restrictive at all. I find it healthy and agree with what kpal73 says in the above quote.

I don't follow any specific diet, but I lean more towards McDougall's Starch Solution, which is very similar. I eat a mostly whole food plant-based diet (with some exceptions) and I don't find it restrictive AT ALL. In fact, there are so many things to eat that I sometimes get overwhelmed by it all. You will certainly still have to watch your portions / count your calories. I love eating this way so much.
