HOOPING CHALLENGE!

One of friends just started a 30/30 challenge for hula hooping. Now, she is an amazing hoop dancer who will put us amateurs to shame, but I thought it might be a good way for those who are getting into hooping to make it a habit, and maybe even learn some new moves.
30/30 means thirty minutes a day for thirty days. I cannot do that right now, but I can hoop everyday for a few minutes, so I am modifying my goal: Mine personal challenge is 30to30 --> I hope to be able to hoop for thirty minutes by the end of the challenge.

Wish I could hoop. Bought one to learn, but its in my closet, gathering dust. Just thinking of what could be achieved, I really should make an effort.0 -

It took me nearly two weeks of daily practice to be able to hoop continuously. But hey, picking the hoop up off the ground burns calories, too!
Come on, just a few minutes a day of trying!0 -

Mine is a weighted hoop. Its like line dancing I would love to be able to do it, but the dvd is sitting on the floor beside my bed. Just think of the calories one could burn hooping whilst watching a 1 hour show on tv.
Now that is multitasking.0 -
Hey Hoopers!!!!
I'm definitely down for this hooping challenge. Any hoopers/hoop dancers, please add me.0 -
Tomorrow is my fast day, but definitely on Saturday, I will spend at least 10 minutes a day and practice. I am going to start using my line dancing DVD as well.0
-
I'm in - I have a 3 lb weighted hoop in Ravens colors :-) I can do about 15 min a day, this is after the beginning bruising has healed :-)0
-
I love hooping! I have a weighted hoop so definitely going to do this. Does anyone know how many calories it burns?0
-
Good question. When I log, I usually just use the Wii hooping entry0
-
Hi Guys I hope you dont mind me joining your challenge, I have a weighted hoop and this is just what I need to get started. Nat :-)0
-
Oooh, yes please! I got a weighted one for Christmas and I need to be more rigorous with using it.
For Socajam - I fast 2 days a week, but I haven't noticed this having any impact on my hooping ability.0 -
I want to give this a try! I have a weighted hoop and DVD!0
-
Just finished 15 min while watching the news lol. Whatever works haha0
-
I am so glad we have so many participants!
I use the hula hooping entry in MFP for calories burned. I think it comes to about 400 per hour for my weight (220).0 -
Here is an article about the intensity of hooping (notice they are using arms and legs, not just waist hooping). My favorite quote: "We were surprised: you think of hooping as a recreational activity that kids do." Huh, when was the last time you swung on the monkey bars?! Kids burn a hecka lot of calories on the playground!!

I don't know if I will do 30/30 but I down to start trying. I have a weighted hoop and I also have a dance hoop. I only really use my dance hoop now. But maybe the weighted hoop would be good for core. I don't know really. I usually hoop about 20 minutes a day. I have done 30 minutes but not every day.0

Love it!!!0

There are quite a few of us on here who are really only committing to hooping every day.0 -
I would do this but I already hoop over 30 minutes every day haha. Maybe I could do a waist hooping 30/30 challenge.0

A little off topic, but are any hoopers on here going to Kinetic Fire in May?0
-
I am going to my sister in law's wedding in May, so no trips back to the Midwest, but it looks awesome! If I ever get good, I will get an LED hoop.
For the beginners, here is a video with a few ideas of what to do if you start getting good enough to get bored standing still and hooping. The first half of the video goes through some arm movements and steps to help you get used to moving with the hoop. Beware of the second half - off body work requires more space than your average apartment! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAyrTDOooos
I learned to today that I can't hoop at all after 30 day shred. I was back to spending a lot of time picking it up off the floor! :ohwell:0 -
Hi all! Here's a group I started back in October for a 30/30 challenge but it kind of fizzled out. We can resurrect it though!!
Join the group and you can add me too!! I think I'm the friend from the OP who started the challenge ;-)
Happy hooping!!

And please please please be careful with those weighted hoops. It's just as beneficial to get a regular dance hoop and you don't have to worry about your core looking like you've been hung by your waist. Don't hoop over those bruises. And dance hoops are just more fun!! And here's the thing, while a weighted hoop is heavier it takes less movement to keep it up (because it is heavier) a lighter dance hoop is going to make you work harder to keep it going. It's like the difference in crunches and speed crunches :-)0

Can you recommend a dance hoop? I got a weighted one for Christmas and while I can keep it up for long lengths of time, it always leaves me with massive bruises (like the size of my whole hand) that take forever to heal and hurt so bad. I'd love to get a less violent hoop but I'm not sure what I should be looking for. Thanks!0 -
I like hoopnotica, but you may also be able to find someone local. If you have friends who might be interested, consider a trip to a hardware store to have a hoop making party. (instructions available online). I actually got my first hoop because out of left over supplies from a hoop party.
I am not one of the pro's so they may be back with suggestions.0 -

Hi! Yes! Options 1) I make them and ship! 2) hoopnotica is a good one. But I also agree with checking locally (you can check on hoopcity.ca to see if you can find some locals. Or if you google you'll probably get a bunch of options. My friend Rebecca at HoopEssence makes great hoops as well and she's also on myfitnesspal. Whoever you order from can help you with sizing and you could still get a heavier hoop (it's based on the tubing used) but it's not like the 3-5lb ones. You can message me if you have more questions or add my hoop page if you're on Facebook Facebook.com/indigosolhoops0 -
How is everyone doing?
For the weekend, I am using good old fashioned get it done techniques: I hoop before we go out for our weekend fun0 -
I love this idea. If it's ok, though, I'm just going to aim for 10 minutes a day for now, just due to time and other activities I want to fit in each day. I'll try to do 300 minutes of hooping in 30 days. It will be a great way to take a work-from-home computer break. Thanks for the idea and motivation, everyone! (That dance hoop has been sitting dusty for years -- maybe I'll learn how to use it!)0

I'm in - been wanting to take my hula hoop out of the spare room for months. This is the shove I've been waiting for!0
-
Oh my goodness I am so happy to see some fellow hoopers here. Count me in!0
