Olympic Ski Team Diet

Hullo ladies and gentlemen!
Have any of you tried the Olympic Ski Team Diet? And if so, did you gain all the weight back quickly?
I'm asking because, well, I'm on it right now. In five days I have lost six pounds. I'm not complaining, but I was hoping someone could tell me if I was just going to gain it right back.
I'm planning on still eating a reduced calorie plan even after I'm finished, so will that help?

Ya what is it? Curious because if I'm correct you eat high calories because of such a high level of working out.. the Olympic athletes go thru..4

Here is the diet. I think it's a diet that skiers use to fit into a weight category, not build a lot of muscle. That works for me because I actually have a sprained anle at the moment. By the time I'm done with this diet, I'll probably be able to get into my regular work out schedule.
"The diet is for two weeks only! Do not exceed!!! Drink plenty of water. Tea clear and coffee black without sugar. Eat only lean meat. The eggs are to be poached or boiled. Coffee is black w/o sugar/cream. Tea is to be clear w/o sugars.
Water of course should be drunk, but don't believe that you will hasten weight loss by abstaining from eating even that which is prescribed. You will only harm yourself if you do.
Do not eat between meals. No alcoholic beverages. All vegetables are to be prepared and eaten without butter.
The basis of this diet is chemical and your normal energy or more, is maintained while reducing. The quantities are NOT important (you may eat as much as you want) EXCEPT where indicated.

Lunch: Two eggs, tomatoes, clear tea or coffee

Misconceptions
A diet called the Alpine Ski Diet became popular in the 1970s. This diet had nothing to do with the US Ski Team. The marketers of this high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet claimed that followers who adhered to the plan could lose 20 pounds in two weeks. All you had to do was send $2 to an address in Alpine, Calif. In September of 1972, the Consumer Protection Division of The United States Postal Office ruled that these claims constituted false representation. A mail stop order was issued. The weight loss allegations were not the only falsehoods associated with this diet. The diet's minimal carbohydrates and high protein indicates that it would not provide sufficient fuel for Olympic skiers. This proceeding was initiated by the filing by the General Counsel for the United States Postal Service, the Complainant, of a complaint on July 28, 1972, in which the Respondent, Alpine Ski Diet, Alpine, California, is charged with conducting a scheme or device for obtaining money or property through the mails by means of false representations in violation of Title 39, United States Code 3005.
THE ALLEGED REPRESENTATIONS
The charges in the complaint in this proceeding are relatively brief and they read as follows:
(a) That an individual can lose 20 pounds in two weeks by following the Women's Alpine Ski Team Diet;
(b) That the dieter will experience no feeling of weakness or hunger while adhering to the diet because the basis of the diet is chemical;
(c) That the diet was devised by a famous Colorado physician especially for U. S. Skiers; and is used by official U. S. Ski Teams during the off season to get and stay in shape;
(d) That the diet is specially formulated to allow the dieter to maintain his normal energy while reducing; and
(e) That the diet is easy to follow by all individuals under all circumstances.

I was just thinking about the same thing.5 -
I've done this diet before but it wasn't called that (I can't remember what it was called). Anyway, I did it for two weeks to kick start my diet. I did lose weight and I didn't gain it back when I went off of it. I think it's a great diet and it works! Thanks for posting it.11

To Yealift:
With all unusual diets, the makers generally claim some immense chemical benefit, or write long, convoluted reasons for why people lose weight.
It's generally hogwash. The diets work because they are low calorie/low fat. I entered this diet under no misapprehensions or beliefs in the magic powers or something.
The reason why I guessed it was to lower weight to fit athletic requirements was because it was given to me by a man whose wrestling team all did it to make it down to categories.
And as for the 20 lbs in two weeks: That estimate is a little high, but like I said, I have lost 6 lbs in five days. If it continues at the same rate, I'll lose about 15-16 pounds.4 -
This sounds very similar to Lyle Mcdonalds Rapid Fat Loss diet although his has a heck of a lot more scientific evidence to back it up. It is a modified PSMF diet that is meant to be over a short period of time depending on your starting weight and to spare as much muscle as possible while ensuring only losing fat and water. I did this, it was great, mentally tough but rewarding and you get refeeds and the science behind it makes sense- PSMF has been around for awhile in many shapes and forms. The only thing about weight gain from either I'd say is that it's generally water and with this diet I'd be concerned about losing muscle. What people (and MFP) think is the recommended protein is quite paltry to what you really need and especially what you need when cutting cals so low to maintain your lean mass.3
-
Jasmith: I'm not too worried about the protein thing b/c I exceed MFP's recommended amount every day, but that's interesting information. Thanks!0

Yes, I was on the ski team diet when I was younger during the 70's. I did gain the weight back only because I did not eat healthy. Whole grains, fruits, vegetables, proteins in healthy amounts and manner everyday. What people do not understand is you eat to have physical and mental well being to omit any radical disease, pain or defects. Yes, some foods taste so wonderful and delicious.
Your mind and body needs the soundness of vitality no matter how old you are. Investigate yourself the different nutritious food values and decide for yourself. Anything and everything that you overindulge yourself is bad for you. Stop blaming others pick up the pieces and try again, don't give up on yourself or loved ones. We would never learn if we never made mistakes.7 -
I HAVE DONE THIS DIET....IT DOES WORK..ONLY I SUBSTITUTE EGGS FOR EGG WHITES AND I DO NOT EAT MEAT SO I USE EITHER SOY BASED PROTEIN OR MAYBE FISH.
I AM GOING TO START IT TODAY...GOOD LUCK TO ME...I WILL REPOST IN ONE WEEK9 -
i am currently on day 1 today.....is there no oil or dressing on the salads.??3
-
No oil, no salt. If I remember right, the eggs are to be boiled as well. Not sure though.
I am going to try it for two weeks starting in the morning to see how it goes. Will try to remember to post my results, but I work overnights and sleep a lot so won't post daily. Stocked up on groceries today and am ready to go!
My striiv was to arrive today as well. It was shipped to the wrong facility though and is delayed.
Would love to have a striiv buddy as well!3 -

So you've done this diet before and it worked. But now you're going to start it again. In answer to the OP's question this would suggest you did regain the weight.9 -
You will regain weight regardless of what diet you follow if you do not maintain activity and sensible eating. If you use any diet to lose weight and then go back to old habits, you will also go back to your old body. You need to make permanent lifestyle changes to the way you approach your diet. There is no harm in following menu based diets, etc, to lose weight, but going back to eating, say, two bags of snickers mini's a day is not going to help keep the weight off. After the weight is lost, better choices must continue to be made.
I am loving this Ski Team Diet though. The menus are not exotic, easy to prepare, and foods that I like. Wish there were more fruit days. I love and crave fruit. I also love and crave grapefruit, so it's all good! I will be able to have my beloved fruit back again soon enough. Minus the french fries and cinnamon rolls, heh. I also like that I do not have to think about what I want to eat all week, it is already planned for me, I just have to decide how much of it I want to eat.
If this diet looks appealing to you, give it a try for one week and see how you feel.4 -
Will it help build my quads?3
-
Yes, I was on this diet in 1973- yes, 1973- and couldn't look at eggs again for decades. I lost about 8 pounds in 2 weeks and gained the weight back as soon as I went back to eating real food. It is a fad diet. If you want to fit into a dress for a party and don't care about gaining weight back right away, I suppose it's ok but don't have your cholesterol checked while you're on it!5

Never done this one, but I'll tell you a top secret, miracle diet that my guru told me about that has worked wonders for not only me, but millions of other people.
1. Set a reasonable, moderate caloric deficit. (approximately 250 calories less than what you should be eating per day, while burning approximately 250 calories as well)
2. Weigh your food, and keep track of how much you are eating with a good, digital food scale.
3. Choose a form of exercise that you enjoy and do it for 30 to 60 minutes a day, at least 3-5 times a week.
We're trying to get Dr. Ox** on board to support and promote it. *fingers crossed*
Give it a try for a few months and let us know how it works!

that's only 28 eggs a week.
That's not that many if you are an egg eater.
I was eating upwards of 10 or 12 a day at one point.
It's fine. You won't die.
That being said that looks like WAY to much variety for your average person to handle as far as cooking meals every day. Bulk cook- measure it out- and eat it through the week.
Seems most people suffer with meals because they aren't prepared for the week- and cooking daily is a huge pain- so the fall back is fast food.
I don't like any diet that is a 2 week kick starter and is super restrictive- it just seems like a set up for failing.
Take some concepts and apply it- eat at a deficit and go from there.1 -
That's allot of eggs. I wonder what the cholesterol levels of the ski team members are?
Most likely just fine since science has come to realize that the cholesterol in foods has little to no impact on the blood serum levels of an individual.0 -
I am already on medication for high cholesterol....is there something I can substitute the eggs for? I would like to try this, but there's just way too many eggs for me. Any suggestions?2

Is this serious?1

Eat any food you like and can eat, log it in your food diary here on MFP, hit the calorie goal MFP gave you.3 -

This is nothing like RFL. Have you read the book?2 -
Nothing like resurrecting a 6+ year old thread that hasn't had a response in 3 years to start a Monday morning after DST...
This is just a high protein, low carb diet. It was making the rounds in another thread about a month ago as the "boiled egg diet".
Following a diet meant to cause a lot of weight loss in a short time (with a lot of water weight loss) to make weight is a great way to achieve long lasting weight loss and learn long term diet habits.1 -
I think this might win the prize for oldest necro thread to get bumped this year...

There's no way this could ever work.
